Also...on Ida Dean Derrow's death certificate (filed 13 Aug. 1917), place of burial is listed as "Derrow Cemetery" (photocopy in hand). -----Original Message----- From: Bill Derrow [mailto:lwderrow@comcast.net] Sent: Sunday, March 29, 2009 12:49 PM To: 'varockin@rootsweb.com' Subject: RE: [VAROCKIN] Rockingham County VAGenWeb site updates Hello, Does anyone know if the cemetery known as "Cavetown Community Cemetery" in the HRHS listing was always called that? I believe this cemetery was once on property owned by my ggg grandfather, Peter Derrow (based on a review of the burnt deed records associated with Peter Derrow). I referred to it as the "Derrow Cemetery" in my 1989 article for lack of another name. Three of the people listed as being buried there (with visible stones) are Derrows. Druzilla (Drucilla) Lamon (Laman/Lemon/Laymon/Layman) was Peter's daughter (and wife of Joseph H. Layman), as was Milta Strickler. Ida was married to Jacob Derrow, Peter's grandson, son of Peachy Derrow and Elizabeth Baker (my gg grandparents). Jacob is buried in Mtn. Valley Church Cemetery. I don't know what the association/relationship is between the Derrows and Higgses (if any). I don't know of any marriages, but I may have missed them along the way. Elizabeth and Elijah Higgs are listed with the following next to their names: "Wooden slab marker-no markings; they are known to have been buried in Mt. Valley Cemetery." If they were buried in Mt. Valley, why would the wooden slab markers cite their names as if they are buried in the Cavetown Community Cemetery? Curious. Thanks to all who have contributed to the HRHS Cemetery Project. My hat is off to you all for your hard work. If you haven't checked it for a while you might give it a try. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/HRHS/cem_index.htm Also, I added a new search engine that should search the entire site now. There were too many pages for the old one and not all hits were indexed. It's on the home page at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/index.htm Good luck!
