Hi there, My maiden name was Haney from Greene Co., Va. The name Smith was very common as a first name in our family. I have made a guess that my gggrandfather John Haney, who married Margaret Miller in 1797 in Orange Co., Va. (present day Greene Co.) and who lived on the border of Rockingham Co. in the Swift Run Gap area may have been married to a Smith before he was married to Margaret. Four of his children were born before the marriage and his son John named a son Smith Haney. The Census of Orange Co. of those days show a Samuel Smith living next door to the Haney family. When I saw your Haney J. married to a Smith and going back to Samuel Smith I have to wonder if there was another generation further back also named Samuel. Do you know anything about Haney J. or do you know of any connections of the Smith and Haney family? Any information would be appreciated and I would be happy to share any info that I have.
