NEW HANOVER PA TO ELKTON VA in the 1700s Approximate Route of Georg Conrad Bloss family trip from New Hanover, PA to Elkton, VA in approximately 1750-53. Old maps detail the route of the mid 1700s from Philadelphia to the Shenandoah valley. It was a major route of the times. The May 2006 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine has an article about the same route from Gettysburg to Frederick MD being used up to and including the Civil War period. We know Georg Conrad Bloss lived in New Hanover for approximately three to five years from several sources. One, George Conrad Bloss is listed in the "Rupp" boats lists at the Philadelphia city hall on the sailing ship "Lydia", which arrived in September 1749. Second, the family baptized a daughter at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Hanover in 1750. Records of the time also indicate that is was very common for German emigrants to be indentured for 5 or 6 years to a farmer to pay for the $18-50 boat fare from Europe. 1. New Hanover is northwest of Philadelphia, just north and west of Norristown. 2. Trip would have followed approximately present day US 30 through Lancaster, York to Gettysburg. 3. In Gettysburg, the route would follow US 15 south to Frederick, MD. 4. In Frederick, the route would have followed approximately US 340 south west to Front Royal and on to Luray and to Elkton.
