    1. HANEY/MILLER/GRATTAN
    2. Joyce, I don't have the Marriage Bond for John HANEY and Margaret MILLER. I used a couple of different books to obtain the information that they were married in Rockingham County, Virginia; however, only Henry M. Strickler's book "Old Tenth Legion Marriages in Rockingham County, Virginia 1778-1816" gave the additional information that I included in my last post. Mr. Strickler took the information from the actual marriage bonds. I would suggest, since we know the bond was issued in Rockingham County, to order the following microfilm reels from the Library of Virginia at your local library through interbranch loan. This is what your local reference librarian will need in order to place the order for you. You will be allowed two weeks to look at the film when it arrives at your local library. Well, worth your time as you will be able to take a photocopy of the original document. I found, after many year of having an old copy of my grandparent's bond that the spelling of the name was different. The bond had gotten photocopied so many times that the spelling appeared different than it actual was on the bond. It is always good to have a good clean copy of the document and you may also find something that is missing such as permission notes and so forth that sometimes may be found in the original book of record. Since my reference books said these records were found at the county courthouse at Harrisonburg, you should be able to find your bond on these films. Rockingham County, Virginia Reel No. 45a; ILL; Marriage Bonds, 1778-1813 Reel No. 43; ILL; Marriage Register, 1778-1816; 1791-1852 _http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/local_rec/county_city/rockingham.ht m_ (http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/local/local_rec/county_city/rockingham.htm) I am not a HANEY researcher, but trying to follow your thought that SMITH and GRATTON surnames may help you with your search I did find, of course, many SMITHs and a few GRATTONs. Griffith GARTON (this could be GRATTON) married Hannah MILLER on 19 September 1787. 1793 Robert GRATTAN married Elizabeth GILMER. 1782 Elijah GRATIN married Sarah BOID. 1778 John BROWN married Frances GARTEN, widow. 1779 Robert GAMBILL married Catherine GRATTAN daughter of John. 1782 Robert POAGE of Augusta Co. married Nancy GRATTAN daughter of John. In 1789 John GRATTAN owed 915 acres in Rockingham County, VA. John GRATTAN signs a petition in 1784 in Rockingham County. That pretty much establishes that there were GRATTANs in the neighborhood with the HANEYs. Good Luck, Chocy

    2. Hi Chocy, thank you so much for all of your help. The fact that the Haney name was written in German was the main thing that caught my attention. We had always thought that the Haney name was Irish. in 1749 in the Orange Co. records, John Haney says that he was immediately off the ship from Ireland. He came at the same time as Richard Lamb and lived near the Lambs; I also know that a John Haney was granted an ordinary license in Rockingham Co. which I have always found confusing. He also was given pay for cleaning some courthouse or church in the Rockingham records. As my John lived in what was then Orange Co. and I have land records of him purchasing land in Orange Co. in Swift Run Gap, I sometimes wonder if there weren't a German John Haney in Rockingham and an Irish one in Orange Co. I know by DNA testing that we are related to James Haney and by will that James was the son of Jeremiah Haney. If the Haney name was written in German, that really throws what we thought we knew some m! ajor curves. I guess I will have to get hold of those microfilm and see the original. Did you see the German name yourself or did someone tell you that it was in German. That would give us a whole new slant on things if that is the case. The descendants of James Haney are absolutely convinced that they are Irish. Family lore or some such thing. This would also prove their theory wrong if the two Johns are one and the same. The Grattan name I had tried to link up with but I think they may have used the Grattan name because the Gratten family was a wealthy one in Rockingham Co. It was Gratten's middle name of Miller that made me head in the direction that our John was the one married to Margaret Miller. My John Jr. may have named his son after the woman that raised him if his own mother had died before John Sr. md. Margaret. I will get in touch with LVA and see what they can send me.
