To add to this conversation, My Henry and Catherine Long had there eldest daughter baptized at Peaked Mountain Church when it was likely still a meeting house. This is one of the earliest records. Henry Long lived adjacent Jacob Harmon who left land "to the Church where the Meeting House now stands" in his will. Jacob Harmon lived adj. the Peaked Mountain (or Jacob's neighbor, would have to check records). I have recently discovered that the same Henry and Catherine (Pence) Long were also married at Peaked Mountain as well (most likely). Their 1761 marraige record can be found in the back of Reverend Alexander Miller's ledger book that he kept for Cook's Creek and Peak Mountain Congregations. This includes 6 pages of baptisms and marraiges performed by Rev. Miller from 1759 to 1764. Said Rev. Miller was a Presbyterian Minister. The records are from the first volume of records of First Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg, VA (originally the Cooks Creek and Peaked Mountain congregations) located at the Presbyterian Church (USA) Department of History, Montreat, North Carolina. Henry and Catherine were Lutheran, why were they married by a Presbyterian Minister? Was it due to the lack of Lutheran mimnister? I believe so...Because I think that only ordained? ministers could legally perform marraiges at that time. Could these records be the source of confusion that some refer to Peaked Mountain as a Presby Church? Just my 2 cents, thought it might help some. Would also like others oppinions.
