I do have just a bit of information that may help you pinpoint when your grandfather died. My grandmother died 30 December 1918. She left 5 young children, one from another relationship. That child was given to someone else to raise. The other four remained at home with my grandfather --- who at the time was old (born in 1855). He also felt that he couldn't care for four young children the oldest being 8. He was advised to try to keep them together. They lived in the Arkton area of Rockingham County. My mother(the eldest) remembers your grandmother and her two children moving to the house (from the alms house) to take care of her and the three other siblings (Jan 1919). She remembers that your grandmother's two children were always crying. Your grandmother was only there for about a week and she packed up her two children and moved back to the alms house. My mother always assumed that 6 children were just too much for a young woman to care for. My mother tells me that she never saw her again. My grandmother who died was Lucy Florence Higgs Layman. What was your great grandparents Higgs given names? Not much, but gives you a slight time line. Lynda
