Michael Sellers- Yes, that is my ancestor. I wish that I knew why he was buried with the name of "Haas" when he used "Hause" in early Rockingham Co. records and "Hawse" later. He was also recorded as: 1810 census "Christian Hause, Sen." in Rockingham Co. 1820 census "Christian Hawse" in Rockingham Co. 1825 deed "Christian Hawse" to William Keister in Rockingham Co. 1829 deed "Christian Haws" to Jacob Bowman in Rockingham Co. 1830 deed "Christian Hause" to Peter Bowman in Rockingham Co. 1830 deeds (2) "Christian Hause" to John Ludwick in Rockingham Co. 1830 deed "Christian Hause" to John Bowman in Rockingham Co. 1830 census "Christopher Hause, Sr." in Rockingham Co. 1834 deed "Christian Hawes" to Abraham Zirkle in Rockingham Co. 1840 census shows a person between 80 -90 years of age living with Christian Hawse Jr. in Rockingham Co. 1848 deed "Christian Hawse, Sen." to Abraham Zirkle in Rockingham Co. 1850 census "Christian Haws" in Harrisonburg Twp., Rockingham Co., Virginia Rockingham Co., Virginia death record says that "Christian Hawse" was 100 years, 4 months, & 12 days old and that he was born in "Dry Fork" (wherever that is). His children used "Hawse". It seems that only Christian Sr.'s tombstone used "Haas". Of course, he could not have corrected that, but his children could have. I am attempting to trace Christian back to Pennsylvania. However, I do not know what Pennsylvania County Christian was from or how he spelled his name in Pennsylvania. Paul, Haas was probably the correct Germanic spelling of the name. I have Clore ancestors, yet we know that the true spelling in Germany was Klaar. I don't think his children changed it simply because he probably wanted it that way. Many people had to change the spellings or just go with what people could understand for spelling purposes because the names were of German origin and thus losing their identities, I am sure he wanted to leave as he came. Crowe was Crow before 1900 except on the tombstones. Crowe is Irish, Crow is English. After they died they didn't care and after 1900 there were so many Irish here it didn't matter. Just something to ponder. Erin T.
