Mitzie Preston- Do you know what the last line means: "acknowledged by Samuel Cootes Justice of the Peace in Frederick Co. and Samuel Cootes oath is again subscribed by H. J. Gambil, Clerk of Rockingham County, VA."? Would this mean that Christian Haas/Hass/Hawse sent his letter about John Krim from Rockingham Co. to Frederick Co.? I see that there was a Henry J. Gambill who was Clerk of Rockingham County Virginia in the 1832 - 1837 period. The name Samuel Cootes, too, is interesting. A Samuel Cootes was the founder of Cootes Store at Brocks Gap, Rockingham Co., Virginia. However, this Frederick Co. Samuel Cootes who was a JP apparently is an altogether different person. Another interesting ramification of this pension application is that, if this is my Christian Haas/Hass/Hawse, he too would have been eligible for a pensions as Revolutionary War Veteran, Christian would have been at a prime military age in 1777. The Pennsylvania Militia was organized in March 17, 1777 and required compulsory enrollment of all able-bodied white males between the ages of 18 and 53. A "Christian Haasse" served on active duty in the Northampton Co. Pennsylvania Militia, during the Revolutionary War. He was substituting for David Brucker. That Christian was probably the one that later moved to the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire Co., (West) Virginia. He appears there in the 1840 census while my ancestor appeared in the 1840 Rockingham Co., Virginia census. Christian Haas #S 5,478, Rev War Service in VA: Christian Haas, a resident of the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire County, appeared in Open Court on 18 Aug 1832 filing for Rev War Pension. He was about 76 years old and was born in Strasburg, Germany. Before moving to VA he lived in Northampton Co PA. He served 7 years as a private. Pension granted. This Christian cannot be the same person as my Christian. I have never found pension records for Christian Haas/Hass/Hawse of Rockingham Co., Virginia. I actively solicit any information from anyone who has anything to contribute. This is my brick wall -- one of them.
