According to "The Heartland-Rockingham County" by Nancy Hess: " The post office was named for the many families of Doves who lived there. Because of the similarity of the name to Doversville, the Postal Department said the name would have to be changed. West Gap was chosen because of the first settler, Thomas West, but many of the people didn't like the name Gap. within a year or so it was changed to Bergton. Apparently there was no significant reason for the name, only a suggestion."
