    3. Henry Dove (?-1801) bought land in the Dovesille/Bergton area as early as 1777. He owned a mill there. (Dovesville is now known as Bergton, VA, and is in the northwest part of Rockingham County) Henry had 3 sons who stayed in the Dovesville area - George, Jacob, and Frederick. George was the high sheriff of Rockingham County for a number of years. He could speak and write English as well as German. The first Post Office at Dovesville was established in 1850 with Ulrick Wittig as Postmaster. For about a year from 1923-1924 Dovesville's name was briefly changed to West Gap, but on Jan. 24, 1924 it was changed again to Bergton. If you have ancestors from DOVESVILLE or the Brocks Gap area, try to come to BROCKS GAP HERITAGE DAY on Sat., April 8 at Fulks Run Elementary School. We'll have 100+ posters of old photos of many of the Dovesville, Criders, Fulks Run families plus schools & churches. All my personal library books of family, local & regional histories will be at the school for folks to use for research. If you have old photos, Bibles, deeds, letters, etc. of Brocks Gap families, please bring them along to let us copy them for future books & posters on the families. (We copy them on the spot & they never leave your possession). Other researchers & authors of Brocks Gap families will be there with their books to sell. Hope to see you at Heritage Day!
