I checked Friday, February 14 and February 21, 1890 but did not find John Robert Gaines' obit. I checked November 28 and November 25, 1892 issues for Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaines' obit but did not find one for her either. The Daily News Record began publication ca 1903; I did find on obit for Catherine Piner Gaines. The [Harrisonburg, VA] Daily News Record, 30 Oct 1924, p. 4, col. 3; microfilm 21, Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA. Mrs. Gaines Dies at Clover Hill Had She Lived to be Day Older She would have been 80 Years of Age Mrs. Catherine Gaines, widow of the late Robert Gaines, and mother of E.W. and W.L. Gaines, of Harrisonburg, died yesterday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock at her home one mile west of Clover Hill. Death was due to complications from which Mrs. Gaines had been ill for ten weeks. Mrs. Gaines was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nancy Cammack Piner, and had she lived one more day, would have been 80 years old, she having been born Oct. 30, 1844. Mrs. Gaines was a life-long member of the United Brethren Church, and was always active in church affairs. She was a devoted mother and a friend to everyone and will be sadly missed in the community where she resided for many years. Besides the two sons in Harrisonburg, Mrs. Gaines leaves four daughters. They are: Mrs. M.H. Lambert and Mrs. Charles E. Sipe, of near Lilly, and Misses Mabel and Betty Gaines, at home. Twenty-two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held from the Ottobine U. B. Church Friday morning at 11 o'clock, the funeral party leaving the home at 10 o'clock. Dr. W.F. Gruver, of Harrisonburg, will conduct the services and interment will be in the Ottobine cemetery.
