Any help would be much appriciated. I'm not finding the information I need on ancestry.com. My maiden name is Jennifer Lynn Coakley. My father is James Thomas Coakley, Sr. His parents were Myron Leroy Coakley and Dora Ellen Crum. Myron Leroy Coakley was born Dec. 21, 1927 in West Virgina. His parents were Joe Coakley and Nelcie M. Wiest. Myron has a brother named Floyd who I believe is still alive but I have no idea how to contact him. His sister has passed away and her name was Gwinlyn "Elaine" Coakley. Their father, Joe Coakley ran off when they were young, but he resurfaced later so I was able to get a little bit of information on him, but not enough to connect all the dots. He was born Joseph A (Austin, I think) Coakley Sept 21, 1899 in Rockingham County, VA. He died August 1979 in West Virginia. I believe his parents were Algernon F Coakley and Nellie (Millie by some records) J Taylor. I've found more information on Nellie Taylor, but I can find nothing more on Algernon. Algernon was born Jan. 1873 in Rockingham County, VA. He and Nellie were married April 22, 1894. That's all I know. I can't find any records of his parents, siblings or death. Any help or further information would be much appriciated. Also, if you find I'm going down the wrong tree that information would be helpful as well. I was also told they were Mennonites originally from Harrison, VA, but I'm not sure if this information is correct. Thank you in advance. Jennifer, The Coakleys settled northwest of Dayton in the area that was called Coakleytown at one time. It appears on older Rockingham County maps, including Lake's 1885 Atlas. Austin Vigar Coakley married Sarah Elizabeth Kniceley in 1871. They were long time members of Bank Mennonite Church. There is a book about the Coakley Family: THEY CAME TO ROCKINGHAM, by Elisabeth Wilson Hodges, published by Warwick House, Lynchburg, Virginia, in 2004. It is well-researched and the author gives her sources. Please email me privately if you are interested in sharing notes on the Coakleys and Taylors. Jennifer, I don't know if anyone has replied to your email and already gave you this information, but I found your Algernon in the 1900 census living in Dayton, Rockingham County, Va. It lists Algernon F., born Jan 1873, Nellie J. born Dec. 1870, Ressie F. born March 1895, Ward? E., born April 1897 and Jos. Austin born Sept. 1899. On the same census page, living in the house next door was Austin V. Coakley who was born Jan 1852, old enough to be the father of Algernon. Also, a clue that this would be Algernon's parents is the fact that Algernon named one of his sons after his father, Austin. But Austin could also be his brother, so not positive. I searched for Austin Coakley and found the following: Rockingham County, Virginia Births, 1853-56 about Austin Coakley Last Name: Coakley First Name: Austin Month: Jan Day: 6 Year: 1853 Race: White Sex: M (Male) Father's Name: Daniel Mother's Name: Ann Page #: 13 I also found Austin in the 1860 census living with his parents Daniel and Ann. He was age 7. I can't find an 1880 census for Austin or Algernon. I wonder if their name has been transcribed wrong. Anyway, I hope this helps you a bit and will give you some names to look for.
