    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Muckham Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.rockingham/3282.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jennifer, I don't connect to your family, but a quick check of census records shows that you're on the right track. Hopefully, this will give you some good clues to continue with in your search. The 1880 Census shows that Algernon Coakley was the son of Austin Coakley and wife Sarah. Just as a note, marriage records in Rockingham County, VA, show that Austin V. Coakley married Sarah Elizabeth KNICELY on or about August 26, 1871. Unfortunately, the last name was incorrectly indexed as "COAKLIN" on the 1880 Census, so it's probably been impossible to find. The family is living in the Ashby District of Rockingham County, Virginia. The household is listed as such: Page 414A Dwelling #163/Family #185 Coakley, Austin, W, M, Age 28, Married, Farm Hand, Born VA Sarah E., W, F, Age 29, Wife, Married, Keeping House, Born VA Algernon, W, M, Age 8, Son, Single, Attending School, Born VA Luther H., W, M, Age 6, Son, Single, Attending School, Born VA Mary Ann, W, F, Age 4, Daughter, Single, Born VA Sarah F., W, F, Age 1, Daughter, Single, Born VA The 1900 Census shows Algernon and wife Nellie, including son JOE AUSTON Coakley, as living next door to Austin V. Coakley and wife Sarah E. Also living in Austin's household is sons Luther H. and Lenny, and daughters, Fannie S., Tina May, and Sallie B. >From this it quite obviously appears that Joe Austin Coakley was born to Algernon and Neillie Coakley and was the grandson of Austin and Sarah E. Coakley. The 1900 Census shows Austin Coakley as being born circa June 1852. In turn, I find a 7 year old Austin Coakley living with his parents, Daniel and Anna Coakley, on the 1860 Census for Rockingham County. In 1870, Daniel and wife Anna had moved next door to live with their apparently oldest married son, Robert Coakley. Austin at the age of 17 is also listed in that household with Daniel and Anna. So, I would say that your line back in time goes Joe Austin, to Algernon, to Austin V., to Daniel. Sorry I can't help beyond that but hopefully its a good start. 3. According to my records, Austin Coakley's parent's full names were Daniel James Coakley (4/16/1816-12/19/1892) and Anna Sofia Alexander (3/11/1820-2/4/1885). Daniel James' parents were LIKELY Daniel James Coakley and Sarah Ellen Vigar. However, Daniel and his wife Anna Sofia are buried at Bank Mennonite Church Cemetery (Western Rockingham County- west of Dayton) and apparently Fielding Coakley is listed as his father on the Gravestone per following link: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/HRHS/cem/bank1.htm Daniel James and Sarah Ellen Coakley are buried in the Dayton Cemetery: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/HRHS/cem/dayton2.htm The Rockingham Coakley's appear to have moved to Rockingham Co. from the King George Co./Stafford Co. area of Virginia No further information is known by me at this time beyond the information provided.
