The Shenandoah River, at least the North Fork of it, is listed by that name on deeds as early as 1752. Where Fort Republic is I don't know but there is a town named Port Republic in Rockingham Co. Va. Port Republic is at the confluence of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and Mill Creek, one of probably 50 streams bearing that name in Virginia alone. The SF of the SB of the Potomac headwaters in Highland County Va. This should clarify or totally confuse the issue. ;) Vince Smith Regarding: Lynne may have something there. I have a deed dated 1763 at the junction of Mill Creek and the South Fork of the Potomac River. It makes much more sense if it is near Fort Republic, Rockingham County than in West Virginia. Does anybody know if the Shenandoah River used to be called the South Fork of the Potomac? Hugh Mottern
