    3. Hi, Linda,   I put the names of the two individuals in a Google Book Search (link is on Google page under more) and came up with the following book. It does include the marriage you mention in a snippet view of page 161 of the book. Since the book is still under copyright, this is all that is shown.   The Martzes of Maryland: A History of Martz of Maryland  By Ralph Fraley Martz Published 1973 R. F. Martz 189 pages Original from the University of Wisconsin - Madison Digitized May 31, 2007   Google Book Search also offers a very useful tool:  FIND THIS BOOK IN A LIBRARY. Clicking on this link takes you to WorldCat, which lists 15 libraries that own this book. If you put your zipcode in the field given for it, WorldCat will line the libraries up in order from the closest one to the farthest from you. Hope this helps.   Sherry Johnson From: KeelerLD <keelerld@aol.com> Subject: Re: [VAROCKIN] sebastian martz To: varockin@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, June 29, 2008, 6:13 PM Thanks.  I just received from a woman named Betty Martz a chapter from a book that someone from Maryland wrote on the Martz family.  Chapter 29 has to do the with Martz of Rockingham County, VA and on page 161 of the book there's a listing for the marriage of Sebastian Martz and Lydia Messerly, Dec. 2, 1839. 3. Vogt and Kethley (Rockingham County Marriages, 1778-1850) only list a marriage between Sebastian Martz and Catharine Snyder, 16 Feb 1819. I saw nothing in Strickler's Rockingham Co., Virginia, Marriages, 1778-1816, for Sebastian Martz (or variant spellings), nor anything for Lydia Messerley/Messelly, etc. in Vogt and Kethley's index. Nothing in Dorothy A. Boyd-Rush's Marriage Notices from Extant Issues of the 'Rockingham Register,' Harrisonburg, Virginia, 1822-1870, either. KeelerLD wrote: >Thanks. I did find an 1850 census record for a Sebastian Martz, wife Lydia, and several children, including a Henry. But, what I'm trying to discover is if my great grandfather, who was known as Alexander and listed his father as Sebastian, is perhaps Henry Martz. Alexander's birthday was March 3, 1842. He was born in Rockingham Co, VA - the Sebastian Martz family was in that county in 1850, then in Illinois in 1870, and Missouri in 1880. My great grandfather was married in Illinois - perhaps he was Henry Alexander Martz. I seem to have hit several brick walls, but I "feel" so close to a new discovery. > >Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. > >Thanks again. > >Linda Keeler > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to VAROCKIN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >

    3. Jerry, it's really a mixed bag. The index to the deeds was NOT destroyed and the Burnt Deed Books were reconstructed from remnants, the index, later deeds of conveyance & original deeds in the possession of the owners. Quite a number have most of the metes and bounds. (I've been all over those books & have had luck with my ancestors . . . . with a few exceptions.) If you have the precise citations, you might want to get a copy directly from the courthouse. It's only 50 cents a page and the copies will be much better than microfilm. Make sure you provide all the info (sellers, purchasers, dates, etc) just in case the reference is off. Other than that, I use LVA's microfilm . . . . . starting with the index . . . . then to the books themselves. There also may be an original survey for the Bryans??? And also something in the Land Entry Books???? As you probably know, in 1762 the land would have been located in Augusta County and there may be an existing survey/land entry there. What I have not seen is the actual deeds with metes and bounds descriptions of the land. Do actual deeds still exist, for example for the 1700's? If so, where would I look? Would I need to come to Rockingham County. Or is there a way to access the deeds on microfilm somewhere? Here's an example: 1791 - Rockingham County Deed Book #00, pp 89, 381-383 - Gasper Moyers purchased 150 acres on the waters of Linville Creek from Thomas Bryan and Peter Bryan for 100 pounds, and the land was mortgaged to John Kring Sr. Micheal Trout co-signed for the mortgage, and the contracted stated that if payments were not met he could sell the property through the Winchester Gazette. Adjoining property owners were John Bryan, William Bryan, and Jacob Lincoln. Thomas Bryan and Peter Bryan were father and son, respectively my gggggg grandfather and ggggg grandfather. Thomas had purchased 300 acres in Feb 1762. I'm pretty sure that the 150 acres that were sold in 1791 were more or less the east half of the 300 acres. 3. Jerry, the deeds are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia as well as other places. If your local library has a microfilm reader, you can order them. Remember that many records in R'ham were destroyed during the Civil War, but many have been reconstructed when owners brought their deeds to the courthouse to be re-recorded. But back to the LVA, you can go online to check the catalog of holdings so you'll know which reel you might want to order. 3. I am sure someone has a more elequent answer, you may be aware, and then, maybe not, that Rockingham County had a LOT of burnt deeds from the Civil War.  Maybe all the deeds, I don't exactly recall. So, the deeds you desire may not be available. My ole leaky brain cells tell me that you can order the deed indexes and deed books (not current, but the old stuff, which is what you want) from the LDS FHC.  Go to Familysearch.org, snoop around for the Libraries, and search places, what you are looking for is the online catalog of their holdings.  Type in Rockingham, click away till you find land records, etc.  click, again, and I believe you will find quite a list of films to play with at your local FHC.  You order them, they come from Salt Lake, you read, and use and learn, they ship back to Salt Lake. Yes, there are variables on all of what I am saying, and I do not intend to insult, so, if you knew all this, I stand humbled. Good luck in your research!
