An amazing number of my maternal ancestors lived in Rockingham, Shenandoah and other nearby counties during the 1800's (to finally all end up in Cumberland, MD!) I've had incredible successes and complete brick walls in my searching. Please bear with me, when they are not ALL from Rockingham Co.... First one is Samuel N. Ellsworth. Born in Augusta Co. in 1833. I had found (and since lost) a marriage license listing his father as Frederick Ellsworth. Previously, I had made a wrong conclusion, because there was a Samuel N. Ellsworth from New England who fought in the Civil War in the same region during the same time period! After reviewing my info, I found that MY Samuel was married AFTER this other Samuel died from battle wounds. Samuel married Eliza Ann Funk on Dec 05 1865 in Woodstock, Shenandoah Co, VA. The Funks are well documented, BUT Eliza's mother's name was Sarah Catherine Smith. I know nothing about her. This is all on my mother's father's side. Now, on my mother's mother's side..... I have Samuel Benson Jewell, b. Jun 18 1809, VA d. Apr 01 1877. He was listed as a shoe-maker in 1860 census and enlisted in the Civil War. HE lived in Rockingham Co., but I can't find anything on his parents/ancestors. He married Sarah Ann Pirkey Long (of Rockingham Co.) in 1850. I have NO idea of her family. At first I assumed Long was her maiden name, but have since found the surname Pirkey, so I'm thinking she was previously married a to Mr. Long(?) Their son, Emanuel Jefferson Jewell (and I hear about the Jewells being associated with Tenth Legion) was born Mar 12 1851, Rockingham Co, VA d. Oct 13 1939 VA. His first (of three) wives was Susan Price b. Feb 06 1845 Page Co, VA d. Apr 24 1883 Rockingham Co, VA. Her Father, David Price, was a farmer/shoe-maker b. ABT 1823 Page Co., VA? He married an Elizabeth. On the maternal side (of my mother's mother,) John Higgs was born in 1780 (no idea where he came from.) He married Susanna Zirkle (and I have a pretty good Zirkle history) Sep 17 1799 New Market, Shenandoah Co, VA. Their son, Elijah Higgs, married Elizabeth Kindle on Jan 31 1829, Rockingham Co, VA. Elizabeth was the daughter of Elias Kindle and (?). Other ancestors were Thorton Deavers Sr. born 1804 (I'd LOVE to find a connection with the Dever (and other spellings) family line) who married Mary C. "Polly" Summers (daughter of Michael Summers and (?) Feb 24 1825 in Rockingham Co., VA. Their son, Michael Harvey Deavers (Sr.) married Leana (Leannah) Frances Spitzer, b. 1830 Rockingham Co, VA d. 1860. Again, I have a fairly good Spitzer history, but her mother, Elizabeth "Betsy" Holden b. ABT 1805 d. AFT 1838 is a complete mystery! If ANYONE is familiar with these people and can provide clues or information I'd be very grateful! Karen: You're definitely in the Port Republic area. In fact, it's more like the Grottoes area which did not exist then, at least as a named place. A forge called Mount Vernon Forge was located on the South River in present-day Grottoes. In fact, my gg grandfather (John Johnson listed on the page before John Burton - see 569/580) reported the birth or death of a son (I can't remember) as occurring in Mt. Vernon Forge. It you look on a current road map and locate where state route 256 crosses South River in Grottoes, the forge was located several hundred yards north of the river crossing. On the page or two before John Burton, I recognize several names and it appears the census taker traveled along the road between the Mt. Vernon Furnace, which was located at the foot of the mountain about 2 or 3 miles east of Grottoes, toward the forge. BTW, I grew up in Grottoes. There were Lees in Port Republic back then. Would anyone happen to know....where would Port Republic have fallen on the 1850 census, District 56 or District 56 and a half? Is there any way to know the name of the town where the people were living if it is not specified? Thanks for looking. That first couple are my 2GGPs. Mary Cline/Kline was her [first] married name, so I suppose if I get real industrious I could look for all the Marys born circa 1799 who married a Mr. Cline/Kline who lived in the Mill Creek / Cross Keys area and (he) died prior to 1850. Of course if that Mr. Cline did not marry in Rockingham [or married by banns with no Minister Return (unfortunately this happened, especially among the Anabaptists) that greatly complicates the search. Samuel & Elizabeth YOUNG FLORY were founding members of Mill Creek German Baptist/ Church of the Brethren, and Mary is buried there, so I'm pretty sure that she died Brethren and may have been so all her life. BTW John Brown [Johann Braun] was the minister at Friedens German Reformed, and despite the law requiring Minister's Returns with three months [think that's right] he provided the court with a list covering over twenty years of marriages he performed and NO dates for any of them. Fairly recently [1970s?] his ledger book surfaced and it had dates for the marriages he performed - copies exist [but I don't have a copy]. Hi Thom, Rev. John Brown was born Johannes Georg Braun, and he was my 4 Great Grandfather. His oldest child, Catherine, married John Sellers, and they were my 3G grandparents. I have a digital copy of his manuscript, which was discovered near Bridgewater in 1972 as a "large, soiled, coverless" volume. The book was used by Rev. Brown to enter his ministerial acts, congregational lists, and various other items before transferring the items over to the respective church registers at which he preached. Rev. Brown transferred 240 marriages to the Rockingham county clerk in 1824 after finding out that he should have been transferring them every year since he began preaching in the valley in 1800. Of the marriages he performed that were transferred in 1824, only those from 1800 to 1813 were contained in his manuscript with dates. His book even contained his account of having seen a comet on January 7, 1801. Joseph H. (Jody) Meyerhoffer became the owner of the manuscript (I don't know who owns it now), and Meyerhoffer then gave complete access to Klaus Wust who published it in 1978 as "Shenandoah History". Rev. Brown's manuscript contained information concerning no less than 14 churches at which he preached. Rev. Brown considered Frieden's his home church, and he was buried there upon his death on January 26, 1850, at the age of 78. I looked through the book, especially its index of names, but I didn't see anything that might be of help in your quest. Good luck, and if I can be of help just let me know.
