Rockingham Listers: There are two sources which relate and confirm (substantially) the above subject line. 1. A book (on Heritage Quest, & probably elsewhere) "A Chapter of Hopkins Genealogy 1735-1905" written by Ellen W. Harrison and published 1905 in Chicago. The author of page 17 in the book was Dr. Archibald Hopkins of Harrisonburg who was the grandson of the Archibald in the above subject line, the emigrant to Rockingham Co. Pages 17-18, which mention the Albany departure point do not name the Parents of John, William & Archibald Hopkins but I have another document, see #2 next, which does name the Father (John Hopkins, of Sussex Co, DE). Pages 17-18, in the book sound like the information is based on an anecdotal/family tradition (as opposed to #2 below which is a primary source) but appears to be on-target when combined with #2 below. 2. In Sussex Co, DE Deed Book H No. 8, pages 116 & 117 dated 20 Dec 1745 is the following: language: "From William Hopkins, Archbald Hopkins, Robert Lawtridge (Lottridge) and Elizabeth (Hopkins), his wife all of Albany Co., New York ...... conveyed the 185 acres to John Hopkins, dec'd late of Sussex Co. and father of the above William Hopkins, Archbald Hopkins, and Elizabeth Lawtridge". At this point I do not know why the John Hopkins who emigrated to Rockingham Co. c1755 wasn't named in the land deed documenting the transaction in #2. Interested in exchanging with a Hopkins researcher who is conversant with any part of the above. I have not before seen the above two items inter related on the internet, or anywhere for that matter. I have a picture of a gravestone picture of an Abraham Hoover b. 1812 d. 1880 that I just took weekend before last. It says "Consort of Hannah ??". I took it at Trissels Mennonite Church in southwestern Broadway, VA, which is close to Singers Glen in Rockingham County. I have pictures of the church and cemetery, too. There are other Hoovers buried there. Check this out. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/HRHS/cem/trissel2.htm Kim _________________________________________________________________ Get more from your digital life. I am repeating this message as I have not seen it come through. Does anyone have information about Peter Barnhart who lived in Rockingham Co. during the late 1700's and early 1800's? There is a lot of info on Ancestry.com that I believe is about the wrong Peter Barnhart. All I know for sure is that my ancestor, Elizabeth M. Barnhart, married Jacob Peter Eckert there on 20 Feb 1808. There is a marriage record for that which states that her father is named Peter. Supposedly she was born there in 1782, also, but I cannot verify Rockingham Co. as her birthplace. Jacob Peter and Elizabeth gave birth to John C. Eckert, my ancestor on 23 Dec 1812 in Rockingham. There are many family trees on Ancestry.com that say the Peter is from PA and died in Chautaugua, NY. The problem I have is that stories I have read of him have absolutely no mention of him ever living in VA. This is why I am questioning their accuracy. Would love to have info on the Peter Bernhart who actually lived in Rockingham Co., VA for a time. Thanks. Joan Benton **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? some one showed me this great message board - so I am sharing it with you :-) TIP #700 – KY TAX PAYERS 1789-1792 – McOMES through MOORE http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.tips/720/mb.ashx Kentucky did not become a state until 1792. However, there were many people living here and paying taxes! The first enumeration of the residents in which was going to become the Commonwealth of Kentucky was called “An Act Providing for the Enumeration of the inhabitants of the United States approved March 1, 1790. The census commenced on the first Monday in August, 1790 when Kentucky was classed as a separate district. The United States Marshall for the District of Kentucky was paid $250 for taking the census. The census was to be completed within nine calendar months after August 1790 so actually the census enumeration actually commenced after Kentucky’s separation from Virginia. The census was completed and returned to Washington to be filed with the State Department. When the British burned the Capitol in the War of 1812, the census for Kentucky was destroyed. Thus the 1790 census for Kentucky was created using tax lists. There will be found duplication of names at times, and names spelled various ways. The name will be shown, county, and the year the information was taken from. I regret having to run the names consecutively, but there are many and to list them in single columns would take forever! This list, when added to the petitions to the VA assembly that I posted several weeks ago, will give the reader a good idea of those of our ancestors living on KY soil pre-Kentucky statehood.

Whitesel's Church closed in the 1960's, joined with the Pleasant Valley EUB church to form the St. James EUB Church--now St. James United Methodist Church located in Pleasant Valley. St. James opened it's doors for it's first service on December 16, 1962. I attend St. James and am on the Historical Committee for our church. The EUB and Methodist churches all became United Methodist churches in 1968. I hope this helps. Michele Van Pelt **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Benjamin Hoover (born 1895) son of Hiram Hoover (born 1852) son of Abraham Hoover (born 1812) son of Jacob Hoover (born 1775, not sure if this date is correct) All of them were born in and lived in the Rockingham County area. Some of them in Singers Glen. Abraham may have had a brother David born in 1819. Could be the same David in your line. I have run into a wall in my research and am grasping at straws!
