I found ref's to two deed transfers---one each from Margaret and Nancy Williamson to Geo Smith on 17 Dec 1827 (but I don't have the text). Yes, I agree--Samuel didn't go to Ohio, but bro Daniel did. I can add only a little bit to the story here and there: The 1987 Quimby (Iowa) Centennial Book---which chronicals the folks whose fam's (incl Daneil's decendents, and some of Samuel's, like Albon) homesteaded NW Iowa, lists the Smith heirs' recollections as such: When Daniel Joseph Smith was nine, his parents (Daniel and Reliance) moved back from Ohio to Stephenson Co Ill. This would be about 1843. The books goes on to say that Daniel died and Reliance remarried. End of story. Was I surprised to find that her new hubby was her Bro-in-law, Samuel! :) The "rest of the (Samuel) story" can be found in some really cool web pages for Stephenson Co Ill: 1. His death, in graphic detail can be found here: Accidentally hit by a train. Newspaper obits are reproduced at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilstephe/vital/samuel_smith1.htm 2. Additional great info/confirmation on this 19-person blended family may be found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilstephe/bios/rudolph_kencke.htm (Rudolph is Samuel's son-in-law and prominent citizen of Stephenson Co. That;s aboutall I have...not sure if you can "see" my fam (Harold & Clark) tree on-line. Have only been doing this for a week now...much to learn. But I ahve several ref's attached to Daniel and Samuel---and am pretty sure I'll be leaving Edith as George's wife (and adding Keziah!), thanks to your help! :) --Sharlee (Harold) LaBrecque Chester, Virginia. I think I found a land record also (however, can't put my finger on it right now) between George Smith and Williamson children (Kezia Thomas married a James Williamson and she was a widow when she married George Smith after her sister Edith died). I don't think I can send an attachment on this list but if you want the transcripted land record which mentions Evan Thomas and his wife Rebecca let me know. I have never been able to find out where Daniel died...do you know? When George Smith dies, he leaves his land to six children. I have only found land records for four of them so far....Daniel, Benjamin, Samuel, and Margaret. I think another researcher and myself have figured out the 17 children and which ones belonged to which couple. I know that Benjamin and Daniel went ! to Ohio but wasn't aware that Samuel went. I thought he went to Ilinois instead. Kay Gavin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I presume that the land deeds are official government documents from the county courthouse. What records are you using to "indicate births"? To the best of my knowledge, there are no government birth records in Virginia at that time. But I will also say that I had 3GGPs who did move from Rockingham to Rockbridge in the 1830s [based on County and Church Marriage Records, Church Baptismal Records, Census Records, Burial Records, etc]. (which I've found MANY other ancestors to "bounce" between the counties of that region.) I think it may be VERY possible that my Sarah is related. This is all on my maternal side. On my paternal side, my grandmother, born in GA. was a Johnson. Her Grandfather, J. W. Johnson was also born in GA. in 1835. I got all my information from her when I was young (about 12-we didn't have internet back then = D) I think she said her Johnson family came from.... I will throw it out for your consideration. I have a GGGrandfather named Samuel Smith Johns(t)on. He was born in Greenbrier County, (W)VA on 04 Apr 1833. His mother is Telitha Matilda Johns(t)on. Telitha moved from Rockingham Co. VA to Greenbrier with her parents, William and Rebecca Nicely Johnston in 1832. Samuel was born to Telitha in 1833. It was related to me, by elder family members many years ago, that Samuel Smith Johnston was an illegitimate child and he was born soon after his mother came to Greenbrier County. I believe that it is possible that Telitha was pregnant and was sent to Greenbrier County to stay with her older brother Anthony D. Johns(t)on and his wife, Elizabeth. I believe that the Johns(t)on family lived in the Brocks Gap area. Did the Smith family live in that area? I have no idea how to find out if Samuel Smith is the father of my GGGrandfather, Samuel Smith Johnston. Although I have found no concrete proof to this time, I believe that there is a possibility that Samuel Smith maybe the father of my Samuel Smith Johnston. If you have heard any stories of Samuel Smith fathering another child please let know. This is my hardest brick wall for all my 35 years of working on my family lines. Thanks for listening!
