Author: DebBWake Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.rockingham/3284/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Pippenger, Wesley E., compiler. Index to Virginia Estates 1800-1865. Vol. 6 Counties of Augusta and Rockingham, City of Staunton. Richmond: Virginia Genealogical Society, 2005. In the preface, page v., the compiler writes: Rockingham County reserachers take note! In the process of compiling this index volume, we made an exciting discovery. For many years a story has circulated, partly true, partly false, that the early will books of Rockingham County had been burned and thus did not survive. As had been done previously in this series to compile extant Rockingham County minute books (as an alternate record source) for references to any estate-related activity, i.e. presentation of a will, inventory, sale or account, or an order for the bond of an administrtor or executor, and other similar items. In the process of ensuring that the most valuable original reocrds had been included for Rockingham County, the compiler discovered original pages, both bound and unbound, from six partial or complete 19th century Rockingham County will books stored at the Library of Virginia. Although two of the books are virtually complete, several of the partial will books have burned edges and have no visible page numbers. Because of the extensive damage to the perimeter of many of the loose pages, the Library arranged for conservation work on the pages before turning them over to archivists. The archivists have begun arranging the pages in logical sequence for microfilming--a process that has proved to be more detailed than first expected. Consequently, the Virginia Genealogical Society's Board of Governors has decided not to delay further publication of this volume and to present primarily the data collected from Rockingham County minute books. The new will book data will be ! published in its entirety when the items become available for review by the public. More details on the provenance of the newly re-discovered items will be included in a future volume of this index. Here are the Library of Virginia microfilm reels foretold by Pippenger: Note: The following nine reels are original will books which were burned during the Civil War, thus making them very brittle and difficult to film. 667 ILL Wills and Administrations, Sept. 1803 - Nov. 1806 (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estates, Estate Sales, etc.) 668 ILL Wills and Administrations, Sept. 1810 - April 1814 (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estates, Estate Sales, etc.) 669 ILL Wills and Administrations, Feb. 1821 - April 1824 (Parts I & II) (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estates, Estate Sales, etc.) 670 ILL Wills and Administrations, Jan. 1841 - July 1843 (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estates, Estate Sales, etc.) 671 ILL Wills and Administrations, Feb. 1848 - April 1850 (Parts I & II) (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estate, Estate Sales, etc.) 672 ILL Wills and Administrations, May 1850 - Oct. 1852 (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estate, Estate Sales, etc.) 673 ILL Wills and Administrations, June 1854 - Oct. 1855 (Parts I-III) (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estate, Estate Sales, etc.) 674 ILL Wills and Administrations, July 1859 - Aug. 1860 (Parts I-III) (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estate, Estate Sales, etc.) 675 ILL Wills and Administrations, Nov. 1860 - March, July 1862 (Parts I & II) (includes Loose Wills, Appraisements, Settlements of Estate, Estate Sales, etc.) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Joshua Reedy (first cousin to Dianah) and Benjamin Bryan were bondsmen - oath said Dianah Reedy was daughter of William Reedy, deceased. It also shows a statement giving permission for Benjamin to marry "my daughter" Dianah - by Nancy Reedy. ~Sue Reedy Propst Life is not how you survive the storm, but how you dance in the rain. -----Original Message----- From: Jerry Bryan <c24m48@hotmail.com> To: varockin@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 9 Feb 2009 1:18 pm Subject: Re: [VAROCKIN] Reedy Family (was Long Burial) > And yes, Isaac Barton was married three times. > 2nd marriage to Margaret Reedy > Bureau of Vital Statistics; Marriages; Rockingham Co., VA; 1853-1915; > microfilm reel 44; Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA > 1879-1-N; June 22; Rockingham Co; Isaac Barton; Margaret Reedy; 49-1-28; > 42; widowed; divorced; Shenandoah Co; Rockingham Co; Rockingham Co; > Rockingham Co; Isaac & Maria?; Jacob & Rachel; farmer; Jacob Spitzer I'm not a Barton researcher. What caught my eye in this E-mail was the reference to Margaret Reedy. My ggggg grandfather Peter Bryan moved from Rockingham County, Virginia to what is now Sevier County, Tennessee in 1790. One of Peter's grandsons was named Robert Reedy Bryan. I have long suspected that Robert Reedy Bryan had Reedy ancestors, and that therefore perhaps I have Reedy ancestors. By the way, I'm not descended from Robert Reedy Bryan. Rather, my ggg grandfather was Robert's brother Peter H. Bryan whose middle name was probably Hubbard. The elder Peter Bryan was married to Betty Hubbard, which is probably where the grandson Peter H. Bryan's middle name came from. A brother of Robert Reedy Bryan and Peter H. Bryan was named William Enyard Bryan. William's middle name is known to have come from the brothers' maternal grandmother, so Peter Hubbard Bryan from the paternal grandmother makes sense for Peter H. Bryan and it also makes sense that Reedy was an ancestral name. Betty Hubbard's parents are not known, and one possibility for Reedy ancestors is that Betty's mother was a Reedy. Peter was the son of Thomas Bryan Sr. and Elizabeth, so another possibility for Reedy ancestors is that Thomas Bryan Sr.'s wife was Elizabeth Reedy. I have not yet had time to do a proper due diligence of Rockingham and Augusta County records looking for the Reedy family. I've found a few records, but nothing that would tie the Reedy family to the Bryans. I note that I have seen the name spelled as Ready and Redy, and sometimes the name is transcribed as Rudy when the two e's are looped so tightly that they look like u rather than like ee. I was just curious if anybody had researched the Reedy surname in Rockingham and Augusta counties, and if so were there any Bryan family connections? 3. Jennifer, The Coakleys settled northwest of Dayton in the area that was called Coakleytown at one time. It appears on older Rockingham County maps, including Lake's 1885 Atlas. Austin Vigar Coakley married Sarah Elizabeth Kniceley in 1871. They were long time members of Bank Mennonite Church. There is a book about the Coakley Family: THEY CAME TO ROCKINGHAM, by Elisabeth Wilson Hodges, published by Warwick House, Lynchburg, Virginia, in 2004. It is well-researched and the author gives her sources. Please email me privately if you are interested in sharing notes on the Coakleys and Taylors. 3. According to my records, Austin Coakley's parent's full names were Daniel James Coakley (4/16/1816-12/19/1892) and Anna Sofia Alexander (3/11/1820-2/4/1885). Daniel James' parents were LIKELY Daniel James Coakley and Sarah Ellen Vigar. However, Daniel and his wife Anna Sofia are buried at Bank Mennonite Church Cemetery (Western Rockingham County- west of Dayton) and apparently Fielding Coakley is listed as his father on the Gravestone per following link: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/HRHS/cem/bank1.htm Daniel James and Sarah Ellen Coakley are buried in the Dayton Cemetery: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varockin/HRHS/cem/dayton2.htm The Rockingham Coakley's appear to have moved to Rockingham Co. from the King George Co./Stafford Co. area of Virginia No further information is known by me at this time beyond the information provided. Hopefully, this will give you some good clues to continue with in your search. The 1880 Census shows that Algernon Coakley was the son of Austin Coakley and wife Sarah. Just as a note, marriage records in Rockingham County, VA, show that Austin V. Coakley married Sarah Elizabeth KNICELY on or about August 26, 1871. Unfortunately, the last name was incorrectly indexed as "COAKLIN" on the 1880 Census, so it's probably been impossible to find. The family is living in the Ashby District of Rockingham County, Virginia. The household is listed as such: Page 414A Dwelling #163/Family #185 Coakley, Austin, W, M, Age 28, Married, Farm Hand, Born VA Sarah E., W, F, Age 29, Wife, Married, Keeping House, Born VA Algernon, W, M, Age 8, Son, Single, Attending School, Born VA Luther H., W, M, Age 6, Son, Single, Attending School, Born VA Mary Ann, W, F, Age 4, Daughter, Single, Born VA Sarah F., W, F, Age 1, Daughter, Single, Born VA The 1900 Census shows Algernon and wife Nellie, including son JOE AUSTON Coakley, as living next door to Austin V. Coakley and wife Sarah E. Also living in Austin's household is sons Luther H. and Lenny, and daughters, Fannie S., Tina May, and Sallie B. >From this it quite obviously appears that Joe Austin Coakley was born to Algernon and Neillie Coakley and was the grandson of Austin and Sarah E. Coakley. The 1900 Census shows Austin Coakley as being born circa June 1852. In turn, I find a 7 year old Austin Coakley living with his parents, Daniel and Anna Coakley, on the 1860 Census for Rockingham County. In 1870, Daniel and wife Anna had moved next door to live with their apparently oldest married son, Robert Coakley. Austin at the age of 17 is also listed in that household with Daniel and Anna. So, I would say that your line back in time goes Joe Austin, to Algernon, to Austin V., to Daniel. Sorry I can't help beyond that but hopefully its a good start. 3. Don't know if this helps or not but according to the 1900 Census for Martinsburg, Berkley County, West Virginia, Peter D. Long (born October 1840) is married to "Anna R.", born January 1855 in Virginia and is age 45. They are listed as having been married for 18 years with 8 children born to Anna and 6 still living. Children living in the household were: William H., born April 1878 (Son) William W., born July 1880 (Son) Mary E., born April 1884 (Daughter) George E., born July 1888 (Son) John T., born December 1889 (Son) David F., born May 1892 (Son) However, Annie R. Long is subsequently listed on the 1910 Census for Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, with slightly different info. She is listed as age 49 with having had only 5 children with 4 still living. Children listed in the household were: Mary E., age 23 George E., age 20 John T., age 19 Flagg D., age 18 According to a file submitted to familysearch.org, Peter David Long's 2nd marriage was to Ann Rebecca RITTER. This would seem to fit the census info for 1900 and 1910. Hope that helps. Michael Sellers --- Jimmie Long <jimbo@ntelos.net> wrote: > I am looking for a wife of Peter D. Long.
