Looking for these three ladies who all married into the Lionberger/many spellings, family, all marrying John Ulrich Lionberger (I, II, and III) Elizabeth Burckholter married about 1700, Barberry Bear married about 1732, and Barbara Boyer married about 1760. I have plenty of information on the Lionberger's, but none on these great grandmother's of mine. Any information would be helpful. All could have and probably did live in the area. I will also share any of the information that I have. Thanks for any help. Sue K.
Hi all: I'm checking to see if anyone can help me with the name of a Cemetery or two in McGaheysville, Virginia. I spent a couple of days there last year at the Courthouse, (got to stay in a Yancey family b&b, too). Upon my leaving I came across a cemetery with no sign, just a cemetery. As I walked up to the first row of stones, I immediately found my great-great grandmother and her parents! It was astonishing! I do not have the name, however. Also - somewhat across from the cemetery I ran into a Church who had a cemetery. Unfortunately for me, there were persons there who had recently lost a child, and I felt it best to leave them alone with their mourning and not make difficulties for them, so I left. I know I wrote the name of the Church down, but I cannot find them. These places were located less than a block or two away from the McGaheysville Post Office. Also any names publications in and for the McGaheysville/Rockingham/Elkton areas would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Julie K. Yancey

I have some relatives who are buried at Union Chapel. Does anyone know where it is? I know it's in either North Augusta or Rockingham County. Don't confuse it with Union Church which is just off Rt. 42 North of Churchville. I 've been there and checked it out. That's not the right place. I have a gut feeling it's in Rockingham Co. Any help would be appreciated. It is possible the land was purchansed in 1727 from Jacob Stover who has been portrayed in various histories as an unscrupulous land agent. John Stover was a Swiss land agent who had been grated a tract of land on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River of five thousand acres by the King of England. He was naturalized on 13 Mar 1741 in Willaimsburg, Va.12,15 Certificate of naturalization was issued by Sir William Gooch, Royal Governor of Va. from Williamsburg Va. in 174. The application indicated that Adam had been a member of the colony for 15 years, This information has been used to establish the date (1726) when the Massanutten were populated. He died in Jul 1783 in Bear-Lithia Spring, Rockingham Co, Va.1,2 He resided at Near Elkton Va. bfr 1726 to 1783.16 He has Ancestral File number 1D3T-BB. The first permanent settlement east of the Massanutten is believed to have been established by Adam Miller in 1726 near the present town of Elkton Va. The first location where Adam settled was probably on Hawksbill levels. This location proved unhealthy for his family. Miller then purchased 820 acres to the south, along the Shenandoah River. This tract included a large spring of bubbling water. Here, Adam built a cabin for his family. He sold some of the original tract, cleared some of the land and began planting and harvesting corps. Sometime later, Miller built a new cabin near where Elkton is today. He called this home "Green Meadows" . He sold 260 acres, including Bear Lithia Spring to his son-in-law Jacob Baer. Adam lived in Green Meadows until his death in 1783. Adam Miller is remembered as the man "who forged a link in the chain of growth that settled the Valley. Some of his descendants still live in east Rockingham: Bear, Kempers, Gibbons, Yanceys, Hopkins, Mauzys, and Harnsbergers. Over the years the family name was changed from Mueller--Muller to Miller. He was married to Anna Maria Barbara KOGER bfr 1720's.1,12 Married prior to immigration in early 1720's Over the years the family name was changed from Mueller--Muller to Miller 55. --------- Begin forwarded message ---------- From: Franksjj@aol.com To: Scotch-Irish-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Lynn/Linn & Somerville, counties Tyrone and Fermanagh Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 18:04:57 EST Message-ID: <e433a13a.36a26c99@aol.com> I am researching two SI families as above: Lynn/Linn and Somerville whose farms were about a mile apart, one in Tyrone, the other in Fermanagh. I have been told recently that these names were "distinctive" for the area. I conclude, therefore, that they had connections in some other part of Ulster. Robert Lynn/Linn b 1775 married Elenor Somerville (1774-1820). He died 1794; she emigrated with their five children (oldest ca 22) in 1796 from Londonderry to Tulpuhocken, PA, then to Rockingham Co., VA. A Lynn/Lin letter says that Robert's father was engaged in growing flax and weaving linen..The family was Presbyterian. Can anyone suggest sources of additional information? If this rings a bell with anyone, please comment even if you have no further information. I'm researching the BERRY and WALTON surnames in the Elkton, Rockingham Co. area; also the LYNN surname in Elkton and in Harrisonburg. Circa 1880 to the early 1900's. Anyone else out there researching these names in these general areas? I'd love to exchange information. -- Carolyn Carolyn G. I'm not sure your could say there was only one area. Rockingham County was very Germanic from the late 1700s onward. For example, Peaked Mountain Church near McGaheysville and Ermentrout's/Trinity Church near Keezletown were both relatively close together, so one might think the area around Peaked Mountain was heavily German. On the other hand, Rader's Church near Timberville also dates from that period and also was heavily, if not predominantly, German. Timberville is not in the same area of Rockingham as Peaked Mountain. Anyone know anything about a Jacob Reichwine (b. circa 1769 PA), who married a Phoebe Dietz in Rockingham County, VA circa late 1700s. Any information on the Reichwine or Dietz families appreciated. Was there a particular German area of Rockingham County in the late 1700s? Thank you. Linda Richwine (LRichwine@aol.com)
Dick I saw your query on the SHENANDOAH rootsweb regarding Georg Conrad Bloss in the Elkton area during the 1750-60 period. I'm from a Conrad line living in the Elkton area during that same period. Conrad maybe the family name of your George Bloss mother. Do you have information on Georg Conrad Bloss mother? If she was a Conrad, please advise, and I'll see if I can connect her with my Conrad line. Claud Miller Sanford

We are working in Rockingham County during the time of 1786 through 1799, and need help with the following: Have found militia records dated 1788. Were all males required to serve or was it volunteer? Were there age limits for being in the militia? Personal Property Tax Records seem to be in districts....9, 10, 11, 12, 14, etc. Is there a map that shows where these districts were located? Did they change from time to time. The ones in late 1790's don't seem to have the numbers by each person. What churches exhisted near Keezletown and Peaked Mountain in this time frame? I found Peaked Mountain records on the internet, but they appear to be incomplete.....are they? Any recommendations of histories of Rockingham Co. during that time (1786-1799) that might give me general information about the life and times there? Can any of you answer the above or tell us where we might find answers? Appreciate any help or suggestions. June everheart@tyler.net
I appreciated the message from From: EVILSIZER3@aol.com concerning the Miller marriage. I am looking for the parents of John Miller. We think that he was born in about 1855, and married on 9 June 1789 in Rockingham Co., VA to Caty Bowman, the daughter of Jacob Bowman. John died in 1822 in Washington County, TN. John named his first son, Jacob. This may not be significant, since his father-in-law was named Jacob. Can anyone help me with this Miller family? Thank you dorrisl1@aol.com
