Arlene Hill It is nice to locate someone else who is researching the early Humble and Kuster/Custer families of Rockingam Co, VA and located in Brock's Gap. I too had early family living in Brock's Gap that were neighbors and closely associated with the Humbles and Custers. Some of the Humbles and Custers moved to Bourbon County Kentucky about the same time as my family did. My family left Rockingham in about 1787. Mine were a German family, Rudolph Mauk/Mock and his son Daniel. Daniel Mauk/Mock, who was my 4 gr grandfather, married Agness Nancy Marshall, daughter of James Marshall and Elizabeth who settled in Brock's gap and died there in 1778. I am completely lost as far as the origin of this James Marshall family. Maybe I too need to search in Bucks Co, PA. James Marshall purchased property there from Richard Dicktum in about 1768. This was originally Augusta County, VA and became Rockingham Co. in 1778, the same year that my James Marshall died. It was Uriah Humble who went to Bourbon County, KY but other Humbles may have gone too. The Bourbon Co, KY marriage records there show marriages for Uriah, Conrad and Noah Humble between 1794-1798. In Bourbon Co, KY, Uriah Humble married Elizabeth Mock who was the widow of George Mock, son of Rudolph Mock. Her maiden name was Cain. The Cains also went from Rockingham Co, VA to Bourbon Co, KY about the same time as the Mocks and Humbles. Someplace, I have a will for a Conrad Humble who went to Bourbon Co, KY and this indicated he was a gunsmith. This was extremely interesting to me because my Mock family who settled around Washington Co, KY and were also gunsmiths and well known in that area of Kentucky. I had often wondered where Daniel Mock had learned this trade, but it may have had something to do with connections with the Humbles. Do you know if Martin Humble or any of his sons were gunsmiths? One of the other Custer's in Brock's Gap also was a gunsmith and that was Richard Custer, Jr (1790-1858) but this would have had to be later and after our family had already left the area. Interestingly, I also see marriages in Bourbon Co, KY for Delays and Delanys. A Conrad Custer also went to Bourbon County, KY but am not certain if this may have been Conrad Custer, Jr I don't have a lot of specific information about your family except what I have in some reference books here at home. I have suspected that my Elizabeth, the wife of James Marshall could have been a Kuster/Custer but I have never been able to find the proof. I have a couple of Pat Ritchie's books on Brock's Gap and an old book called The Custer Families by Milo Custer. Milo was a descendant of Richard Custer, son of Paul Custer. Milo later became an historian in McLean Co, IL. Milo's descent went like this: Paul Custer Richard Custer (1757-1837) Richard Custer (1790-1858) Jacob Custer (1817-1892) Samuel Custer (1842-?) Milo Custer (1880-?) It would appear that your Conrad Kuster (1693-1772) may have been the father or maybe a brother to Paul Custer. Is that correct? I guess you know that "A History of Rockingham Co, VA" by John W. Wayland has some history of the Richard Custer families in Brock's Gap. Wayland's book makes a statement which may not be completely accurate, he states, "Tradition has it that Paul Custer, founder of the Custer family in Rockingham ...." I wonder if that shouldn't be founder of one of the Custer families of Rockingham, unless there was another Paul Custer who may have been the father of Paul Custer. Maybe you can enlighten me on this. One of the Custers, and it seems like it could have been a Conrad, purchased the Brock's Gap James Marshall Estate in the 1790's after all the Marshall family had moved to Kentucky Territory. I have more detailed records of this somewhere. My great-grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth WOOLFORD. She was born February 10, 1833 in Virginia (?) and died January 14, 1892 in McGaheysville, Rockingham Counry, Virginia. She is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery, McGaheysville, Rockingham County, Virgina beside her husband, William Gray REID, born April 10, 1819 in (?), died after 1873 in McGahaysville, Rockingham County, Virginia. William Gray REID's mother was LUCINDA (?) REED who is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery. Think I need another life in that I would kill or die to learn more about these two individuals.
