    3. Linda, Wow. There is a little book recently published entitled, "Early Church Records of Rockingham County, Virginia" by F. Edward Wright (about $11.00) published by Family Line Publications (1-800-876-6103). In in are the baptisms of Friedens Church from 1786 through 1799. One you might be interested in: "1793: baptised (?) 19th: to Johan Ehrman and wife Chatrina is born Martin Eli Sebastian August 1793 witness Jacob Berby and wife." (copied exactly) ******************* > iv. MARY ELIZABETH MESSERLY, b. August 16, 1798; d. Deceased; m. WILLIAM >MCDANIEL, Bef. 1823, Rockingham County, Virginia. > >Notes for MARY ELIZABETH MESSERLY: > According to a Huffman researcher, Mary Elizabeth Messerly was baptised >at Friedens Union Church in Rockingham County, Virginia on September 30, 1798. I salute your researcher for finding the above reference because it is noted as follows: "to Hannes Maesserye and wife a daughter named MariElisabeth is born 16 August 1798 and baptised 30 September 1798" (copied exactly) I will e-mail Chuck and cross my fingers. I DO hope that when your book on the Earman family is published you will inform the list. This is no time for modesty. Thanks so much for your help, Maggie

    3. Linda, What an incredibly generous gesture. I'm tucking all the marriages away. The more information the better. The one that made me sit up was the following: >Descendants of Elizabeth Huffman > > 1 Elizabeth Huffman b: Unknown in Richmond Township, Berks County, >Pennsylvania d: Deceased >. +John Messerly b: Unknown d: Deceased m: Unknown in Rockingham County, >Virginia I have information on her parents, Valentine Hoffman and (maybe) Anna Marie Franck. A lot of files show she married a ? Messerly, but you are the first to note a first name. I do not find any information on this marriage in Rockingham County. She was born, according to one researcher, December 22, 1754. Would be very grateful for your source on the marriage place and his first name. AND, I'm almost scared to ask, do you have descendants? And all those Earmans. I'll contact you privately. I have Earmans I would LOVE to know more about. Thanks again, Maggie Kyger Miller

    3. I'm in the process of trying to sort out the various Hoffman/Huffman marriages in Rockingham County hoping to establish which of these people were in my line--VALENTINE HOFFMAN. He arrived in Rockingham County in 1780 and became an elder at Frieden's Church. The name evolved to Huffman about 1825. I know there were other Hoffman/Huffman families in Rockingham County and elimination of some of these marriages as not in my line would be VERY helpful. So, would appreciate hearing from anyone who has these names in their line. It goes without saying, that I am more than willing to share information. Maggie Kyger Miller maggiem@empnet.com

    1. [VAROCKIN-L] Apprenticeships
    2. Michael and June Everheart
    3. I have noticed that the Personal Property Tax Lists seem not to include all of the males between 16 and 21 that should show-up in the families that I am working on. In fact on the 1796 Tax Lists there seem to be many families that have only one or no males between 16 and 21. My questions are (1) was it common to apprentice or bound-out teenaged males so they could learn trades and (2) if that was the practice, were the apprenticed persons "tithables"? If they were not, then can I assume that they would not be included on the tax list? I have run into a couple of families that should have three or four teen-aged males living in the household, and there are either one or none listed. Guess I should have stated that I am working on 1787 through 1800 tax records. Any ideas appreciated. June

    1. [VAROCKIN-L] Stitzer-Harrisonburg
    2. I am trying to locate the father and his family and origin of Addison Stitzer of Orange County. The 1850 Census lists a seventy-year old William living with Addison and family or Addison is living with him and two daughters?? I found a Wm. Stitzer in Rockingham in 1780, 1790, and 1810. In the 1860 Census I found a John Stilzer in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co. A John Stitsler was in Shenandoah Co. 1783 Census. I have believed that they were related to the PA or MD Stitzer/Stitchers. I believe the generations are William, Addison, John William, Ray Vernon, Jack. I believe that John William, known as Willie or Bill was the link that changed from Stitzer to Stitcher. The name has numerous spellings, such as Stichter in PA, Stichles in NY, a Wm. Sticher in Orange 1830, a Joseph Sticher in DC in 1870, and Jacob Sticher in Baltimore in 1800. At least three generations were hatters or milliners. Old Pap, made top hats. Can someone please help me find and identify correctly Addison's father and mother and of course his siblings. The family was supposed to be German. Any questions please write me. I haven't been able to find out-of-print books for Rockingham. Thanks, Glynda Stitcher Fox

    1. [VAROCKIN-L] Best Kept Secret In The Valley
    2. Monday I had one of those great experiences that only genealogy can bring. I traveled to Rockingham Co. to do some cemetery snooping. On the way I decided to stop by Bridgewater College and personally thank Terry Barkley the archivist at the Alexander Mack Library for some work he had done for me. I had not met Terry personally but we had e-mailed a few times. He turned out to be the most accommodating and friendly person that one can emagine. He personally showed me the Special Collections section of the Library and kept me supplied all morning long with genealogically related books on my family. The Special Collections section at Bridgewater College is much larger than the collection at the Rockingham Harrisonburg Historical Soceity and it's electronically indexed! They have a website which you can use to get to the electronic card index and also it will link you to the library at James Madison Univ. and the Univ. of Virginia. In the afternoon Terry serves as the Curator for the Reuel B. Pritchett Museum on campus in the basement of Cole Hall (every building on campus is only a five minute walk from the library). Going through the museum is a nice little break after you've been pouring over family histories for four hours. I can only tell you that going to the Library at Bridgewater College needs to be a "must" on your list of things to do when you're in the Valley. The exposure to the friendliness and generosity of Mountain Valley people was a rewarding experience. I definitely plan to go back. By the way, I never got to the cemetery. Here's their website. <A HREF="http://www.bridgewater.edu/departments/library/library.html">Alexande r Mack Memorial Library Home Page</A> Sincerely Tracy Hunter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My HUNTER family http://members.aol.com/th3978/index.html In Augusta Co., Va - HUNTER, GOOD, BOYERS, LANDES, LOWMAN, BAKER, RIMEL In Rockingham Co., Va - HUNTER, SITES, SMITH, BOWMAN ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
