    1. [VAROCKIN-L] Clarks and related families
    2. Bill and Cindy
    3. Hello everyone, I'm part of a group of people, researching Clarks and all their related families. We've constructed 6 webpages giving (Direct Line Descendancy's) of the lines from which some of us descend and/or are researching. It's at http://members.tripod.com/ClarkCousins/ (Note: Many of us are cousins who have found each other online while researching Clarks.) If you're researching a Clark line, please drop by and see if we have any information on your Clark line. You might even be another cousin. If you only have one Clark in your family, you might want to drop by and try to find out if you're related to any of us. Keep in mind these are not complete charts, they contain only the basic direct line descendancy of that Clark researcher. If you feel you may have a connection to any of the lines, please contact us at clarkgenealogy@iname.com If your Clark line isn't there already, you can contribute your own Clark line for posting, if you like. It might help you find new family info or maybe even meet a cousin you never knew you had. 1. [VAROCKIN-L] Cousin Will = Will Harnsberger?
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello, With regard to my inquiry about a letter writer yesterday, I have determined that the letter was written by Mary Gibbons (8/31/1810-01/10/1905), 2nd wife of my ggg-grandfather William Burbridge Yancey. I think that "Cousin Will" may have been a "Will Harnsberger" that is mentioned in another letter. Does anyone have information on a Will Harnsberger, especially one that had an uncle named Jacob Miller? -- Thanks, Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu

    2. I am a descendant of John Clough, born in approximately 1749. There is a record of him in Rockingham Co. in the 1784 census under the name spelling of "CLUFF". He moved to Harrison Co., KY with a land grant and died there. Does anyone have a connection to him? Barbara Clough Hannah Cincinnati

    1. [VAROCKIN-L] Jacob Miller & Catherina Kisling?
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. FYI -- I just ran across a web page that provides much historical information on the Kisling line: http://www.megsinet.com/~sharprm/library/kesling.htm Ann Kisling was the mother of the Frances Virginia (Kemper) Gibbons who may have been the receiver of that letter I inquired about earlier. According to this webpage, Ann's father Jacob Kisling had a sister named Catherina Kisling who married a Jacob Miller. I wonder if this could be the Jacob Miller referred to in the letter. Does anyone know anything at all about the Jacob Miller who married Catherina Kisling? If so, I would like to hear from you. Jacob Kisling is my ancestor through two different lines of descent. His daughter Ann Kisling married 1st John Pence & 2nd Rodham Kemper -- this is the line discussed just now (Kisling > Kemper > Gibbons). Jacob's daughter Christina Kisling married Joseph Mauzy -- their daughter Julia Mauzy is also my ancestor through the Kisling > Mauzy > Winsborough > Yancey line. My great-grandparents were William Lewis Yancey and Mary Ashby Gibbons -- both descendants of Jacob Kisling. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu

    1. [VAROCKIN-L] Jacob Miller with nephew named Will?
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello all, I have a bit of a puzzle on my hands, and am hoping that somebody can help. I am in possession of a fair number of old letters, most written to my gg-grandmother Frances Virginia (Kemper) Gibbons (6/16/1830-8/26/1912; born in Cross Keys). I am trying to transcribe these letters. I would like to add some notes regarding the individuals discussed in the letters, but am finding that difficult because I really don't know who everybody is. The letter I am asking about right now was written on May 12th & 13th, 1862. It is addressed to "My Dear Sister", and is signed "Mary". Unfortunately it does not have an envelope with it, so I don't know for sure who the receiver was, and therefore don't know for sure who sister Mary was. [I have a number of letters with no envelopes, as well as a number of envelopes with no letters; matching the two sets so far appears to be pointless.] There are some clues in the letter that may be useful in determining the identity of the sender and receiver. The letter refers to a "Cousin Will" and also to Cousin Will's uncle "Jacob Miller". I went to the 1850 Census Images for Rockingham County just now (both the Kemper and Gibbons family are found in Rockingham County), but there were so many listings for "Jacob Miller" that I just didn't know how to identify the right one. Does anybody know of a Jacob Miller who had a nephew named Will? I believe it is possible that Will was shot by the end of the letter, but don't remember for sure. Wherever the letter writer lived, she mentioned Jackson's army, and a "Camp", obviously a military camp, that was within walking distance of her home. She was close enough to be feeding soldiers on a regular basis. She mentioned Moorfield, McGaheysville and Staunton. Other names mentioned include Jane, Sarah, Bob (who had a new baby not yet named), one hard to read, but which I assume to be Layton, and also a "Cousin Sims". If you can help me identify any of these people, I would be very grateful, but I would be particularly grateful if you can identify Jacob Miller and nephew Will. Robert Allen Gibbons, husband of Frances, had a sister named Sarah Ann Gibbons who married a William Shanks Miller. Whether this is "Cousin Will" or not, I have no idea. When I finish transcribing the letter (hopefully today) I will send it to the list in case that will help with the identification. In case anyone is interested -- the earliest letter in that pile was written in 1840 from Christina (Gibbons) Hammer to her sister Elizabeth (Gibbons) Armstrong in Palistine, Cooper County, Missouri. Christina and Elizabeth were sisters of Robert's father John Gibbons who married Jane Elizabeth Ke(i)ffer -- all were children of Isaac Gibbons & Mary Gangwer (born & married in Pennsylvania). -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu

    3. Can anyone help clarify this small mystery? In 1947, Eliza Sours Miller Fadley Runion, died in Woodstock, Va. & is buried in Ohio. Listed as her survivors were the following children: Reason Miller b. 1908 Violet P. Miller Snider b. 1905 Maynard Miller Russell Miller Mae Miller Greenlore Gladys Fadley Lee Leonard Fadley In 1967, Russell David Runion, husband of Eliza Sours etc, died & the same children were listed as stepchildren with a major exception: Reason Miller was now known as Reason Orebaugh. In 1975, I have found that Reason Devaugh Orebaugh, died with an entirely different set of parents, namely, Jacob Augusta Orebaugh & Elma Crider Orebaugh. Listed in his obit are the same siblings as listed in obits of Eliza & Russell David Runion. 1st question - was Reason a Miller or an Orebaugh? 2nd question - are his Miller siblings really Millers? Any & all help will be extremely appreciated Thanks, Judy Campbell jcampbel@shentel.net -- http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/9793/ Researching: Sours, Miller, Sedwick, Montgomery Fristoe and others

    3. I want to thank everyone who directed me to ancestry.com and the Genealogy Library at Family Tree Maker to find the 1860 index. I belong to both and had checked both but stupidly had decided that since the particular name I was looking for was not listed--they were at fault for not having a complete index. Of course once I got more creative with the spelling they all appeared. Thank you again for prodding me. It's great fun wandering around neighborhoods in the actual census on this CD and it sure beats going blind peering through a microfilm reader. Maggie

    3. Maggie, Two of the online providers, Ancestry.com and genealogylibrary.com, have made the Census Index information available. Of course, you have to have a subscription to access the information -- but it is there. genealogylibrary.com is also providing access to the actual 1850 Census itself. For the 1850 Census year, when you find your person on the searchable index -- you can then click on "Image", and the Census page itself will be shown (though sometimes you have to get the other half of the page image to see it). For those of you who already have subscriptions to Ancestry.com, just point your browser to: http://www.ancestry.com/census/main.asp For those of you who already have subscriptions to genealogylibrary.com, you can limit your search to just the 1850 census for Virginia by going to the following address: http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/6330/glcsearch.html Maggie, since you want to search the 1860 Census index for Virginia, rather than 1850, here is the URL for you: http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/6273/glcsearch.html Hope this helps -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu "Margaret K. 1. [VAROCKIN-L] Andrew Jacob Hudlow and Elizabeth Royer
    2. Margaret K. Miller
    3. I think that I am probably not alone in that I have developed an obsession with a particular individual. >From a book, which I would guess was privately published, called "Hudlows in America" by Marguerite E. Robinson, printed in Nashville, Tennessee January 1969: "Mary, daughter of Andrew Jacob Hudlow and Elizabeth Royer married William Kyger". The book notes a child of this marriage as David Newton Kyger. 1) FACT: Mary JONES married William Kyger. (Bond exists) 2) No other Kyger researcher has noted a David Newton Kyger 3) 1850 Rockingham County census does not note a David Newton Kyger as a child of this family 4) FACT: William Kyger died April 28, 1855 (gravestone) Now the intriguing part: 5) 1870 Rockingham census notes the following: a) Mary KYGER, age 30. (In conflict with the 1850 census which says she was 24--birthdate of about 1826--and her gravestone which notes her birthdate as June 14, 1827. b) Newton KYGER, age 8. Birthdate of about 1862--seven years AFTER her husband's death. (I have found marriage information for Newton Kyger and birth records of three of his children. One of his children is buried beside the graves of his in-laws. They are all buried in the same graveyard as Mary Jones Kyger and her husband, William Kyger.) c) Luemmalilly (a guess at best) KYGER, age (doesn't even resemble a number). Sex: could be an M or an F but is crossed out. Noted as "at home". d) The five farms surrouding Mary are occupied her three daughters by William Kyger, her brother-in-law and her brother-in-law's son so there is no question that this is William's widow. So, my question: Are there any Hudlow or Royer researchers out there who are acquainted with the children of Andrew Jacob Hudlow and Elizabeth Royer (specifically Mary and who she married)? Maggie Kyger Miller
