    1. [VAROCKIN-L] George Washington Garrison
    2. Dee Randall
    3. My gg grandfather, George Washington Garrison, is listed as born in Rockingham County. I have no date, but I do have the date of birth of one of his daughters born in WV in 1866, so he would have probably be in Rockinham much before then. It is listed that he had spouses: Unknown Hart, Ginsie White Kemper and "probably the last" Charity Ann Boise. I would assume the first two were in Rockingham County, but I don't know that. I haven't found any of the above on the 1850, 1810, or 1820 census. I looked today in the Rockingham births 1860-1865, nothing. But since I have received an answer to a similar query within the last hour suggesting that maybe I I should look in Rockingham County, North Carolina instead. But in case this is not fruitful, if anyone has any information re the above, thanks again. 3. The small community is Ottobine - Otterbein was a Methodist (I think) church leader and there is a church in Harrisonburg by that name. -----Original Message----- From: Margaret K. 1. [VAROCKIN-L] "THE FOREST"
    2. Joanne Halterman
    3. Can anyone tell me anything about a place called "THE FOREST"? 107 acre tract that was sold to David Caldwell in September 1812 was still owned by Caldwell in 1819 and is located in what was known as "The Forest". The Forest is in the vicinity of North Mountain where it joins with Rockingham, Shenandoah and Hardy Counties. Thanks, Joanne HALTERMAN

    2. New to the list, so I thought I'd briefly post the lines I'm researching: Perry Baugher (Civil War) Lacey Springs (have two conflicting stories of which Baugher is his father), and wife Mary Haga Linville area of Harrisonburg: Simmers, Summers and Spitzers John Frank Fitzsimons John A. Scott and wife Emma Holt, originally from North Carolina Shiflett, Monger and Whitesell. I have lots of stuff on some, little on others. If anyone else is researching these lines, let me know. 1. [VAROCKIN-L] Miller-Kite House?
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello, I'm trying to figure out if there is any information available about the Miller-Kite house. I think it is in Rockingham County, but I don't know for sure. This house was built circa 1829 (probably a little before) for a Henry Miller. Samuel Gibbons was the architect. He married Christina Miller, daughter of Henry. I would like to find a map that shows the location of this house, or a description of it, or a picture of it, or preferably all three. I've been told that it is a National Historic Landmark, but that appears to be untrue, as it doesn't seem to be listed on the website for the National Historic Landmarks. I am a Gibbons descendant (of Samuel's brother John Gibbons), and have recently posted a letter written by Samuel's wife Christina: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/gibbons_letter_1840_03_22.htm This letter, along with the others I have posted, mention the Harnsberger, Hansberger, Conrad, Miller, Furry, Sellers, Yancey, and Bear families, and several other surnames as well. The series is available from: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/letter_series.htm I am a Yancey, Miller, Gibbons & Bear descendant, and have some limited info on Conrad and Harnsberger, but the other lines are ones I know almost nothing about. My other Rockingham County surnames include Kisling, Kemper, Mauzy, Winsborough, Keffer...surely I'm forgetting a few. -- Mary Taffet mdtaffet@syr.edu

    1. SHARP
    2. Pat Johnson
    3. Have been searching early Augusta Co. records to locate any information on John Sharp and his wife Margot... located a will book giving her authority to settle his estate in 1749. Does anyone have any information on this family--or possible church records, etc. We know Margot died the next year because she left 4 children as orphans by 1750 or so--John, William, Jennett and Marget. If any of this sound familiar, please contact me. Thanks, Pat _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Visit http://www.msn.com

I have only one child listed for this couple and I'm sure there must be others. I have a skeletal outline of the family moves from Rockingham into Ohio and then on to Iowa. Thanks, Gordon

    3. Hello, Please forgive the cross-posting, but I feel that several county and area lists in Virginia will benefit from this. I just discovered a wealth of information available from the VMI website, with regard to the Civil War resources they have available. Included are some old class lists. I found one of my names on the list for 1852. The address is: http://www.vmi.edu/~archtml/cwsource.html -- Happy Hunting, Mary Taffet (daughter of a VMI alumnus) mdtaffet@syr.edu
