    1. [VAROCKIN] JOHN CLOUGH FROM ROCKINGHAM
    2. Hi folks, I'm still trying to find the roots of John Clough from Rockingham Co. He's my g-g-g-g-grandfather. We know he was living in Rockingham in 1784 because he's in the Census. We have a lot of information about John when he was in the Rev. War and after he moved to Harrison Co., Kentucky in 1795 and we have the listing of most of his decendants. However, there are 2 Cloughs still living in Rockingham Co. but they have never responded to my phone calls so I presume that they're not interested in their family history. We (there are a group of us still looking) can't find any link to the Cloughs of Northeast Cloughs, the PA Cloughs or the Virginia Cloughs. I'm fairly sure that we're only one link away from Elizabeth Clough Anderson from Gold Mine, VA family but we haven't been able to make that connection. I've tried to make a connection to the Andersons of Rockingham but can't find a connection back to Elizabeth's husband's line. Seems like a dead-end. Can anyone help? Thanks, Barbara Clough Hannah Cincinnati

    1. [VAROCKIN] Armentrout/ Hasler/ Pittington surnames 1800s.
    2. Jahns, Kristina
    3. I am interested in finding out information on the following people, who I believed resided in Rockingham county, Shenendoah county or Augusta county at some point: Sara Ann Armentrout (Abt 1848, VA -1935) married to John Phillip Hasler Abt.1830, VA -1907). Armentrout may be spelled Armintrout, Ermentraudt, Armantrout or Armentrought (or various other ways). I have seen it spelled many different ways in the information I have found out so far regarding the Armentrout family. I have found information regarding many Armentrout's in this area of Virginia during this time period, but thus far I have not been able to determine how Sara Ann fits in. Sara Ann and John Phillip had a son, Robert Lee Hasler (Abt. 1869-1940) who married Eliza Jane Pittington (1864-1926). The only information I have been able to find out about Eliza is that she was likely born in Rockingham county out-of-wedlock to a woman named Mary. Their son Paul Hasler (b. June 8, 1891) and his wife Louisa Emila (Elise) Banko (b. May 25, 1901), are my great grandparents. By 1926 they were living in Cashmere, WA. Any information about any of the above people, their ancestors, or their descendants, would be greatly appreciated. Please respond by e-mail. Thank you. kjahns@kenyon.com

    3. DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!) <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= Rockingham County, Virginia Birth Records, 1866-1884 Lying on the border with West Virginia in the northwestern part of Virginia, Rockingham County was home to over 25,000 people in 1870. This database is a collection of birth records for nearly 7900 children born in the county between 1866 and 1884. Taken from microfilm copies of the original documents, this database offers researchers information regarding the child's name, parents' names, sex, race, and date of birth. The page numbers refer to the original documents from which these entries were taken. To those seeking ancestors from Virginia, this collection can be a valuable source of information. 1. [VAROCKIN] William B. Scott/Christina Sellers
    2. Jane Williams
    3. I will submit to you my only known Rockingham County family. I would very much like to know more about them. William B. Scott m. Christina Sellers in Rockingham County, Va. April 9, 1792. He was killed in War of 1812 in 1814 in Norfolk, Va. Christina apparently is already deceased at this time, and the family is living in Franklin County, Va. The oldest of the 12 children a daughter Rosana or Rosannah, takes the responsibility of raising her siblings but eventually returns them to the FC courts. I believe that Michael Sellers was the father of Christina. I know that the towns of Port Republic and Tenth Legion are involved in these people's lives. William B. Sellers may have been indentured to Frederick and Elizabeth Farley for his passage from Scotland. Most of what I do know came from several pages sent to me sometime ago from a book called Cradled by the Massanutten: The Zellers-Sellers Family by Mary Marie Koontz Arrington. (If anyone knows where a copy of this book can be purchased, even second-hand, I would love to have that address!) I will exchange information about the daughter of Christina Sellers and William B. Scott, Sarah Ann Scott, who was my ggggrandmother. She married Robert Bernard in FC, Va. in 1826. Thanks bunches! Jane Bernard Williams, Social Circle, Ga. janwilli@mindspring.com

    3. Janet and Earl Downs have written two volumes on the Mills of Rockingham County. They are available from the historical society here in Harrisonburg. The tel. # is 540-879-2616. If you are not interested in buying the vol. with the history of the mill in it perhaps they will send you some copies. (There are many photos of mills in this area) The response about the crossing of Swift Run Gap and Pleasant Valley is very interesting. I am not a native of this area but wonder about that location as Swift Run Gap is a "gap" along the top of the Blue Ridge and Pleasant Valley is some distance away in the valley itself, sorta southeast of Harrisonburg. I wouldn't mind someclarification of this geography to better understand the region. Hope the historical society can help you. Mitzie -- Preston, Madaline H prestomh@jmu.edu
