    1. Re: [VAROCKIN] Elizabeth Byerly and Michael Cline/Kline
    2. Maggie-- There is a book in the Rockingham Historical Society entitled "Cline-Kline Family" compiled by Paul Kline, Linville, Va., Shenandoah Press, Dayton, Va. First Generation: George Klein Sr. 1715-1785 B. Germany Second Generation: George Kline Jr. Philip David Abraham Jacob Joseph Sarah George Klein Jr.'s children are: John Joseph George III Frederick Michael Catherine This is what is says about Michael: "Michael Kline born at Broadway. m: Catherine Berry born at Edom, Va. One reference has it that Michael Kline went to Ohio for some time, then returned and married in Edom in 1833. He lived at Dayton and about 1855 moved his family to Baltimore. Elder John Kline mentions visiting him. He was a prosperous merchant. His 13 children are recorded in the Beery history." I don't have the entire book, but you could contact someone at the Rockingham Historical Society--I understand the book is for sale. Diana Fitzsimons

    1. [VAROCKIN] Elizabeth Byerly and Michael Cline/Kline
    2. Margaret K. Miller
    3. Does anyone on the list have knowledge of the children of this couple? Elizabeth Byerly was born about 1776, the daughter of Joseph Byerly. She married Michael Kline June 2, 1798 in Rockingham County (bond dated May 2 1798). Her name was spelled Byrer in the records. She died August 28, 1857 in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. Her husband died February 23, 1839 in Deerfield Township, Ross County, Ohio. There is solid research of one of their children, George Cline, born August 19, 1799 in Rockingham County. My problem is on one of their other children, Michael Cline. A book was published in 1905 on the history of Abraham Beery by Joseph H. Wenger noting the marriage of Chatherine Beery to Michael B. Kline on May 28, 1833 in Rockingham County. No mention of Michael's parents, but he is noted as having been born in OHIO. A number of files appear on the internet showing that this Michael was the son of Michael Cline and Elizabeth Byerly. It might be so, but my Michael was born in Rockingham County after 1798. His parents did not remove to Ohio until the 1830's. I have contacted a number of Cline and Beery researchers and not one of them can confirm who this Michael Cline's parents were. 3. I am researching the parentage of a Sarah Coffman b. ca 1815 ,possibly in Rockingham Co, with a brother Isaac b.d. not known. Sarah was in Pickaway County in 1830's married a Rudolph Figle (Fiegle, Figel) from Pa in Fairfield Co Ohio in 1840's. She was the mother, aunt or guardian of Susannah Bechtel born 1833 in Circleville, Pickaway Co Ohio who took the name Figle when Sarah married. Isaac was in Ohio in the 1830-1840's also. I know of some Coffmans from Pa who lived in the area of the Shenandoah Valley and then moved west into Ohio in this area..but cannot locate one with a Sarah and Isaac. 3. I agree 100% with the opinion given by John. One only needs to look at an 1820 Census index to become aware that this country already was populated by gazillions of people with the same surnames which means that just putting out your favourite surname is the needle in a haystack. Roll calls are a waste of resources and time. Thats my opinion. Thanks! Louie On Friday, September 10, 1999 9:36 AM, John Rush [SMTP:w4mlk@bellsouth.net] wrote: > Good advice from Karen. 3. Good advice from Karen. Roll Call is not a legitimate subject for any genealogical content. However, better advice might be to discontinue roll calls completely. If you think about it, roll calls do nothing that can't be done 365 days out of the year. The only real thing a roll call does is tie up RootsWeb facilities by concentrating huge numbers of messages in a short time, messages that would normally be spread throughout the year. At least one list absolutely forbids roll calls as being an inefficient use of time and facilities. Maybe this list should consider such a restriction. This would in no way restrict the ability of the individual to participate in the list. It would only prevent a call that concentrates possibly hundreds of messages within a short timeframe. Please think about it. 3. I Give up, do we have to go through this same thing every month or so? Neither Roll or Call is a surname I'm looking for. All you people who put Roll Call in the subject line should repost, most of us don't have time to read every message that is posted to us, especially the ones that don't take the common courtesy of not being generic. 1. [VAROCKIN] SWARTZ/SWATS/SWATTS/BLACK
    2. Trying to find the parents of: Eli SWARTZ/SWATS/etc. who married Frances "Fannie" Coffman in Rockingham County in 1844. He was born in 1823 either in Augusta County or Rockingham County...I lean toward Rockingham as there are no Swartz's listed in Augusta in 1820 or 1830 census. Eli & Fannie's first daughter's name was Hannah, and Eli's mother spoke German and only broken English. My best guess is that he is the son of John SWARTZ/BLACK who married Hannah ESENWHETLER/ERHENWHETLER/etc. in 1812 in Rockingham County. Anyone with ANY information on ANY SWARTZ/SWATS/SWATTS/BLACK in Rockingham County in the 1760 - 1830 range, please email me. If I could figure out siblings or eliminate Swartz's that are NOT his parents, it would be a help, as there are less than 10 in the area at this time. Thanks! Paula

    1. [VAROCKIN] Roll Call
    2. My 4th great-grandparents were Mary (?) and Peter Fox. They sold their land in Madison Co. on Oct. 17, 1816 and moved to Rockingham Co. On Oct. 21, 1817 an Administrator Bond issued was issued in Rockingham for Peter so it seems he died sometime during that year. His wife Mary was still living there on August 18, 1821 when she gave permission for her minor daughter Fanny to marry. After that the whereabouts of Mary Fox is unknown. Did she leave or remarry? Were there other Foxes living in Rockingham during that period who might be sons? Any info appreciated. Thank you, Lari Naismith, larin@aol.com

    1. [VAROCKIN] Rockingham Co, VA SMITH family
    2. Phylliss Davis
    3. I sent this to Margaret K. Miller in response to her letter regarding The Dreaded Roll Call. So decided to send it to the entire Rockingham List: William B. SMITH was marr to Christina SITES, in 1812, Rockingham Co, VA. Her birth: 1789 in Rockingham Co, VA Her father: Christian SITES, b.1755, d. 1828 both in Rockingham Co, VA Her mother: Elizabeth REIMEL, b. abt 1765, d. abt 1828, both in Rockingham Co, VA William B. or William Barnum SMITH separated from his wife in about 1843. She lived with her son David R. SMITH & his family in Rockingham Co, VA William SMITH's daughther, Elizabeth SMITH marr Jeremiah PARRETT in Rockingham Co, bond dated 31 July 1848. I have another bond dated 9 Sep 1850 for a marriage between Jeremiah PARRETT to Mary Margaret WHITMORE. So ... Elizabeth must have died. Was there a child? Was that the reason he married so soon after his first marriage? It is the same man as the signatures match on the two bonds. In 1852/1853 the entire family, living children & their families, moved to Warren Co, IL. John SMITH was deceased beore the move; killed in an ambush (family lore) & his wife, Mary Ann BUCHANAN, stayed with her family near Brocks Gap, but her two sons & a daughter went with their grandfather to IL. The other children were: David R.SMITH & wife, Elizabeth KELLER; Andrew Jackson SMITH & wife, Amanda PARRETT (He was called Jackson); Josiah SMITH & wife, Barbara HALAWAY; Juliette SMITH; William S.SMITH & wife, Catherine Elizabeth BROWNE. Also Wm B's housekeeper & her child: Mary OLINGER & dau Priscilla The parents of Catherine Elizabeth BROWNE were John BROWNE & Elizabeth ZIMMERMAN. They to went to IL. I assume Christina SITES SMITH had died before they moved to IL. I looked for divorce papers and there are none. The entire family lived in the Linville District of Rockingham Co. SMITH's are hard to research. Any clues will be great-fully accepted & appreciated. Phylliss SMITH DAVIS - Glendale, AZ
