Hello Listers, I am sending the following article to the list because I thought it might be of interest to someone on the list. It was printed in the Frederick News Post in Frederick, Maryland on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999. Judy SON OF CIVIL WAR VETERAN HONORED LAVALE (AP)--Albert Comer, Maryland's last surviving son of a Confederate veteran, is somewhat puzzled by his celebrity. "I just never gave it any thought, really," said the retired factory worker. "To someone else, I guess it would be a big deal." To the Sons of Confederate Veterans, it's fantastic. The descendants organization recognizes just four other living sons of Southern Civil War soldiers nationwide. "This is a very big deal for us," member John Millirons said. "You don't see too many of these coming down the pike anymore." Mr. Comer, 78, will be inducted into a Maryland chapter of the club at a ceremony near Gettysburg, Pa., on Saturday. The Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. retiree is more accustomed to expressions of disbelief when he reveals that his father fought for the Confederacy. "When I would tell people, they thought I was pulling their leg," he said. James J. Comer joined the Confederate Army at 14, serving as the youngest infantryman in Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's 33rd Brigade. After the war, he returned home to Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and raised a family. After his first wife died, Mr. Comer took another, Lucy Sly, 34 years his junior. They had seven children, including Albert, the youngest, who was born in 1921 when his father was 74 years old. Albert's niece, Nancy Lantz of Ridgeley, W. Va., documented her grandfather's military service. When she met Mr. Millirons and some other members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans earlier this summer in Gettysburg, she relayed her family history.
I visited Keezletown (in Rockingham County) over the Labor Day weekend. There were A LOT of Miller's buried in the cemetary adjacent to Bethel Church. Some of the graves dated back to the 1700's. Is there a book that lists the internments? By the way, does anyone know why there are so many swings behind the church? It's very curious! S. Fridley Henrichsen SEARCHING FOR FRIDLEY and ARMENTROUT
This is a great group. Yesterday, I posted a query asking for help weeding out the Millers. By this morning, I had 5 answers. The two most promising as to being the parents of my John Miller, b. prob. 1755 (I do not know the sourse of this and it could be later), and married Caty Bowman, the daughter of Jacob Bowman. John went to Washington Co., TN by 1787. The two most promising leads concern Adam b. 1703, who had a brother, Jacob, born 1702 and also, John Miller, who with his wife, Hannah sold land to Jacob Bowman in 1779. I have been told that this John descended from Jacob Miller, immigrant of 1710 or Hans miller of Pequea. Can anyone tell me more about these people? Thanks very much. There is no hourly rate when you visit the Historical Society. Just a flat $5.00 fee for the use of the library. (We are not subsidized by the county/city and must pay our own way.) The staff is very helpful. I think you will be pleased with the resources there. At this time, your son will not be able to access the genealogy library but there is a comfortable room on the main floor where he can perhaps read...or sit outside and enjoy this fall air. The public library has good resources as does JMU's library. Parking is easy at the public library; parking at JMU is almost impossible. You are basically on your own at both libraries. The courthouse of course has some records, it depends on what era you are searching as it is a "burned county". I would think you would want to start with references in the many genealogies in any of the three libraries. Hope you enjoy your stay. Do plan ahead for a room as when JMU functions are in full swing...football, homecoming, etc.....rooms are very scarce. Margaret, I too have a hugh database of Rockingham County. In fact I am a 6th generation of Rockingham County natives. I have mostly monitored this list for a couple weeks now. I don't have a lot of free time, but would be willing to help anyone who asks, as long as they don't expect "instant" answers. I work full time, but do have a hour here or there to run to the court house or library. These are the family names I am related to: Reedy, Riley,Miller, Custer, Shoemaker, Freed, VanPelt, Cherryhomes, Roadcap, Bible, on my fathers side. My mothers side: Hensley, Dean, Wyant, Breeden, Eppard,Monger, Maiden, Utz, Baugher, & Meadows. ~~ Sue Reedy Propst Aimza38@AOL.com

Hi folks, I'm finally going on that one day trip to Harrisonburg (delayed from June due to the heat) to try to track down John Clough for the mid-1700s. Rather than try to go to every place that I've noted in recent months on this list, can someone please give me suggestions for "must see" or "must go" when I get there to try to get the info? I can't afford the hourly rate for the Historical Society and, although I know they'd do a great job, it's not something that I can afford. Also, my handicapped son is going with me and he doesn't have a lot of patience while I spend hours going through books. Thanks in advance for any help that I get, Barb Hannah Cincinnati.
I am trying really hard to figure out the names of two Clatterbuck children in the 1920 Rockingham County, Virginia census. Here's what I have (see below). The dates also are approximate. I think this portion of the 1920 census was written in invisible ink ! Unknown Female Clatterbuck looks like --ent M. Unknown Male Clatterbuck I can't read at all. Thanks ! Descendants of Joseph Clatterbuck 1 Joseph Clatterbuck 1883 - Unknown . +Effie S. I asked for the parents of John Miller that married Caty Bowman, and so far no one has been able to give them. I am wondering if anyone can tell me the names of the Millers that are NOT his parents. John may have been born as early as 1755 and he was in Washingto Co., TN by 1787. Does anyone have information on the descendants of Adam Miller, said to be the first settler in Rockingham Co.? I have some on his children, but not much on his grandchildren. Also, there was a Jacob Miller that in 1787 was exempted from paying poll tax because of age. Was this the Jacob Miller, whoe's estate was settled in 1793? It appears that he had a son, John, could this have been my John? Any information on the Millers of Rockingham Co. will be appreciated. John married into the Jacob Bowman family. I do not know his religion prior to that, but he probably either was or became a Mennonite, or Church of the Brethern. Perhaps by pooling information on the Miller families, they can be "sorted" out to the benefit of everyone. Thank you. Dorris Lagow dorrisl1@aol.com
This list, though I did not mention it in the copy and paste below, includes many counties, and certainly the ones this post is sent to! --- Dear Folks: I have started an emaillist to find out if the Virginia and Pennsylvania Branches of the KITE Families merge. There is increasing evidence, albeit circumstantial, that they do. This would be a most exciting event, as these two great lines have basically remained apart, not in knowledge that the other part is likely theirs also! One PA Kite, Abraham KITE and Mary PETERS, who allegedly (LDS) came to Augusta County, VA. James KITE and Martha WYNNE. Several children are purported to have been born there, and, indeed, I get reports back from AUGUSTA CO., that there are KITES from there. A second one, either James or John Wendell KITE married Hannah Medlicott. John settled in Virginia. Family tradition had said the same for James, so it is not clear what is happening here, but they came to Rockingham County. Or at least the husband did. It would appear he had to have remarried because the children listed by LDS has them all born after Hannah had died. At any rate, in Rockingham, Page, and Shenandoah Counties, there exists, in large quantities, the name KITE. Now, if you would like to join our list and share our data, please go to: http://Kitesmerger.listbot.com/ and use the button interface to subscribe. It is free. It is very easy to unsubscribe, also, if you so choose. Finally, we will be growing an archives that our group can search. So, if you join, you will be receiving a computer-generated password. Since we are doing Roll Call, I have one dead end that no one at the Kline/Cline GenForum site can seem to help with. John Kline was born approx. 1804 and married Rebecca Purkeypile in Rockingham Co. in 1822. In DESCENDANTS OF DAVID HOLSINGER OF VIRGINIA by Paul G. Holsinger,M.D., he claims that the land on which the Church of the Brethren atLinville Creek was donated by John Cline and wife on March 1, 1830. The original building was erected that same year. In the same book, he is referred to as John Cline of Arkton. In the 1850 Census of Rockingham Co. he is listed in the 56th District in dwelling 2003 as follows. Cline, John 46 M Laborer he can evidently read and write. Elizabeth 40 F she cannot Mary 22 F she cannot Dewitt 13 M Thomas 8 M Rebecca 10 F Samue l7 M William 2 M Anyone out there shed any light? I have never found any connection between him and Elder John Cline. -----Original Message----- From: VAROCKIN-D-request@rootsweb.com <VAROCKIN-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: VAROCKIN-D@rootsweb.com <VAROCKIN-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, September 10, 1999 7:54 PM Subject: VAROCKIN-D Digest V99 #127
