All I can really remember is that there actually WAS such a thing as a "Tunker" minister, but no one could really tell me the difference between "Tunker" and "Dunker." Maybe the confusion arose because sometimes, using a German dialect "Dunker" comes out sounding like "Tunker." I think the term "Dunker" comes from the church members using the "full immersion" method of baptism, but again I am no expert. I got the impression that the "Dunkers/Tunkers" were aligned with the Mennonites. I'm sure there's a website somewhere that might explain it more fully.

Zachariah Sr. was also listed > with a wife who was also over the age of 45 and a young girl who was under the > age of ten as well as another girl who was 26 - 45 years old. Other Crawfords who were listed on the 1810 census of Rockingham Co., Va. was a man named Martin Crawford (page #147). He was listed as a 26-45 year old male with a wife of the same age group and a son who was 10 -16 years old; there was also a man named William Crawford (page #138) who was also listed as a 26-45 year old man with a wife who was also 26-45 years old and they had no sons but 3 daughters who were under the age of 10 at that time. There was also an elderly woman named Sarah Crawford who was listed on the 1810 census of Rockingham Co., VA., however, there were actually two women listed in this home who were both over the age of 45 at that time. Don't know who the other woman was. There was no listed of anyone named Jeremiah Crawford of Rockingham County, VA., on the 1810 census, however, there was a man named Jeremiah Crawford listed on the 1810 census of Monroe Co., VA., who was 26-45 years old. 1. [VAROCKIN] Available census information for Rockingham County
    2. Margaret K. Miller
    3. Just to clarify what census information is available for Rockingham County: At the Family Tree Maker site http://www.familytreemaker.com/ Look on the right hand side of the page for an open book inside a circle. Click on that (Genealogy.com). For $9.99, one can buy a ONE MONTH subscription to this site that contains a lot more than just census information. The ACTUAL census images for 1850 Virginia plus actual census images for number of other states is available here. Also available are the Virginia census INDEXES 1810 through 1870--among other states. This is a searchable site. FTM also has CD's for sale, including the 1850 Virginia actual census images with index included (CD #309); the 1860 index for Rockingham County, among other counties, (CD #318); and the 1870 VA and WVA census index (CD #290). Understand that these CD's can ONLY be viewed through FTM's genealogy software program whereas their on-line site--with the same information--does not need the program. ************** Actual census images by COUNTY are available at http://www.allcensus.com/AllcensusFrames.html including Rockingham 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920. These are .tif images (excellent quality) but unfortunately are $49.00 each. These census images do NOT include an index. Several imaging programs are avilable on the CD's. ******************* An Index to the 1880 Census for Rockingham County was published by Iberian Publishing Company. It can be purchased through the bookstore at Shenandoah Valley Folk Art & Heritage Center. (I THINK about $10.00.) http://www.heritagecenter.com/Contact/Contact.html The site lists genealogy books available for Virginia, but the list it is not complete. If you are lucky enough, when you phone, to reach an experienced volunteer, she might suggest other books. I shall always be grateful for the suggestion that I purchase "Abstracts of Executor, Administrator, and Guardian Bonds of Rockingham County, Virginia 1778-1864" ($10.00). ************************ The Family History Centers can order actual census images for your use--I believe by county--for a nominal fee. They will keep the microfilm at their local Center for your use for a couple of weeks. (No index with these microfilms.) ************** So many people have said, "Do not count on indexes." They are so right! Find the neighborhood where your family lived and wander through it. You will be surprised at what you find. Great fun. ***************** I unfortunately find that I do not have the time to do lookups. Maggie

    3. Crawford does not appear on the 1850 R'ham census with those children. What you have is someone's work that is in an apparent mess. Number one rule for doing genealogy is to work backwards in time. There just is no other way to do it if you want it done correctly. When you get info such as that below, you have no way of knowing if it is correct, if the information has been documented, or if it is truly your line. There's an excellent article on the web by Richard Pence which will give you guidelines and Richard also includes information on how to use census records. The site can be found at: http://everton.com/GENEALOG/GENEALOG.FHSEARCH A lot of census records are not indexed and the indexes that do exist are not always accurate. The only way to document your work is to view the actual census films. You'll need to visit your library to view the films. If the film you need is not in stock the library will order it for you. The census info will not look anything like the presentation below. There are books available that you can either purchase or request a look-up but you really need to see an actual film and you need to know what census records are about and how to use them. It's very enjoyable to work backwards in time and find the siblings on a census record. Then, by the time you get back to 1795, you'll know if those are brothers, cousins or whatever. 3. Diane, As far as I know, the 1870 census is not online anywhere at this time. You will have to go to someplace like an LDS Family History Center, look at the index, and then order the microfilms. As information for others that might need census information, this is what I've found so far: 1810 and 1820 Census http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/rockingh.htm 1810 and 1820 Census, 1830, 1840, and 1850 Indexes ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/rockingham/census/ 1850 Census (Original Pages with Index) http://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/index.html (This is a pay site but does have some databases not available elsewhere, especially for Rockingham, so it's probably a decent buy.) Dear List Servs; It was recently brought to my attention that Zachariah Crawford would have been to young to have children, as I have him listed below, but he is in the 1850 Rockingham census as being 55, with the family I have. Any suggestions? I'm really confused on this now... ZACHARIAH2 CRAWFORD, son of JERIMIAH, was born 1795 in Rockingham Co. VA. He married LEIVY. >>Children of ZACHARIAH CRAWFORD and LEIVY are: i. The information above gives Zachariah's birth as 1795. He would have been age 11 and 12 when the first two children were born. Could John b. 1806 and Obediah b. 1807 have been brothers?
