Rootsweb suggests uploading our family trees onto Rootsweb free pages -- as a way to have a backup. If we lose it all, we can go to our upload and download the whole thing. This is also a good reason to keep our uploaded family tree updated. Then if we need it, it's all there. Lynne --- original messages My system crashed and took my entire family tree with it. Thanks for your sympathy and assistance. Unfortunately, it appears the drive heads are jammed on the data. I've had people working on it. I intend to retain the hard disk in a safe place until a cure is found for this disease! Recommendations from the specialists I have consulted say a zip drive is not as reliable as a CD Rom R/W (read/write). Buy the fastest rpm you can afford. Prices are high now but will be coming down. They go between $250-400.00. May I suggest you BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP away from your hard drive. Hi, Can anyone tell me where Fort Hoover was located? Thanks M Hill ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
The following was posted at one of the Rootsweb County sites. I received permission to post it here. Maggie *************************** I'm not related to this person, just wanted to share this hoping it might help some else. _______________________________________________ Biographical History of Tippecanoe, White, Jasper, Newton, Benton, Warren and Pulaski Counties, Indiana, Illustrated, Volume 1, 1899 pp. 926-928 DAVID YOST The YOST family springs from old colonial stock of Virginia and German ancestry, who were Lutherans. ANTHONY YOST, the grandfather of DAVID, was a farmer in Rockingham County, Virginia, and his children were JOHN, JACOB, ANTHONY, ABRAHAM, WILLIAM; MAGDALENE, who married WILLIAM GLADDEN and settled in Wea prairie, Tippecanoe County; a daughter who married MR. BOWERS and located in Preble County, Ohio; another daughter, who became the wife of a man named WIKLES; and still another, who became MRS. BECK. ANTHONY YOST settled at an early day in Preble County, Ohio, as a pioneer, cleared a tract of land in the forest and passed his remaining days there, as a farmer. He lived to be a man of venerable age, dying at his home in Preble County. JACOB YOST, the father of our subject, was born in 1805, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and when young went to Preble County, Ohio, where he was brought up a farmer and also learned the distilling business. In the county mentioned he married RACHEL FOUTS, a native of North Carolina. MR. YOST continued to reside in Preble County, for a number of years after his marriage, and then emigrated to Indiana, settling in Tippecanoe County, on the Wea prairie near the GLADDENS, about 1839. Next he purchased land on the Wildcat Creek, in Carroll County, and finally owned about two hundred acres. He did not settle on the land just alluded to, but continued to follow the business of distilling, settling about 1843 on land near where his grandson AMOS now lives, in Perry Township, when there were three distilleries in the neighborhood. His children were: WILLIAM, born in 1827; ISAAC, in 1829; JAMES, about 1831; DAVID, January 17, 1832; CATHERINE, who died an infant; JACOB; LEVI, who died young; MARY, JOHN and GEORGE. The first six were born in Preble county, Ohio, and the others in this county. MR. YOST was an industrious and upright man who reared his children to good habits. He died in August, 1854, in Perry township, this county, at the age of fifty-five years. DAVID YOST, the father of our subject, was born January 17, 1832, in Preble county, Ohio, and was seven years old when brought by his parents to Tippecanoe county. He received no school education, but learned to read and write by his own energies, while he was brought up among the typical pioneers of this great state. Throughout the most of his life, especially in his younger days, he was employed in clearing land. At the age of twenty-two years, in 1855, in Perry township, he married MARY J. WEAVER, who was born March 7, 1839, in that township, a daughter of JOHN and CATHERINE (HOMER) WEAVER. JOHN WEAVER was born in Ohio, of sturdy Pennsylvania-Dutch stock from Montgomery county, Ohio. He moved to Tippecanoe county in pioneer times, locating on land in Perry township. His father, JACOB WEAVER, also came to Perry township and built a mill on the south fork of the Wildcat, and this was one of the earliest mills in Perry township. JOHN WEAVER became a prosperous and substantial farmer, owning at the time of his death about two hundred acres of land. His children were SAMUEL, CHARLES, MARY J. and JAMES. He died at the age of about fifty-five years, a member of the "Dunkard" church. After his marriage DAVID YOST resided in Perry township, bought land in the green woods in Ross Township, Clinton County, Indiana, where he cleared a goodly farm of eighty acres, and completed a comfortable residence with inviting premises. By his first wife his children were CHARLES, WISLEY and JOHN. The mother of these children died in 1858, three years after marriage at the early age of nineteen years. She was a young woman of noble character. In 1865 MR. YOST married, in Darke County, Ohio, MRS. SARAH (WEYBRIGHT) LUCAS, the widow of GEORGE LUCAS, and by this marriage there were five children: AARON, AMOS, DAVID, RACHEL and NANCY. MRS. YOST died March 21, 1877. MR. YOST is a member of the German Baptist church, as were also both his wives. He has always been a hard-working farmer, and, in relation to his fellow-citizens, zealous in good works. AMOS YOST, one of the sons above mentioned and also one of the subjects of this sketch, was born in Clinton county, Ohio, April 27, 1867, brought up on a farm and received a common-school education an also a normal education at the National Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio, and also a collegiate training at Purdue University, near Lafayette, this state. After quitting the halls of scholastic learning, he began teaching a public school, in Ross Township, Clinton County, this state, in 1890, and continued the successful prosecution of his profession there for five years. In 1896 he began teaching in Perry Township, Tippecanoe County where he is at present a well known educator. He purchased forty acres of good farming land, settling upon it in 1895, and here he has a pleasant home. He is a young man of good education and intellectual ability, having a good reputation throughout the county as an efficient educator and being uniformly successful in his school work. Politically he is a Republican. He was married in Clinton County, Indiana, August 13, 1893, to MYRTLE WOODRUFF. MR. YOST's children are VELDA R., born September 11, 1894 ; and LILA BERNICE, born February 12, 1898. CHARLES W. YOST, another son of DAVID YOST, and a patron of this work, was born May 13, 1856, in Carroll County, Indiana, received the usual country school education and has always been a farmer. At the age of twenty-four years he married, in Perry Township, February 17, 1881, VIOLA MAY WARWICK, who was born in this township, in 1860, a daughter of ROBERT and ELIZABETH (STALEY) WARWICK . After marriage Mr. YOST occupied rented land for several years, and in 1892 moved to his present farm of one hundred and fifty acres, well improved. His children are CLARENCE, BERTHA and EVA M. Politically he is a Republican. He is an honored citizen of the township, of which he has been trustee three years and is a practical, straightforward honorable citizen. AARON YOST, still another son of DAVID YOST, is a practical farmer and respected citizen of Perry township, born in Clinton County, Indiana, October 21, 1865. He received a common-school education, taught school two winters in Perry Towship, and October 18, 1889, married RENA WARWICK, also a native of this township, born April 28, 1870, on the WARWICK homestead, a daughter of GEORGE W. and CATHERINE (BARR) WARWICK. After his marriage MR. YOST continued to reside on the WARWICK homestead, and is well known as a straight forward and practical farmer. His children are DALE M., born April 22, 1890 and VERNE W., born November 15, 1894. Professor JOHN YOST, another son of DAVID, has passed all his professional life in the educational field, and is now a resident of Egg Harbor, Wisconsin.

Hello to all: I have been researching the Kingree surname for quite awhile now. We have 9 generations in Rockingham, Shenandoah and Page counties, beginning with Daniel Kingree in 1766. If anyone is researching the Kingree surname, or has the Kingree surname as a collateral line, would you please e-mail me direct? This could have various spellings. Thank you! Pamela Kingree Moats
OK Here's the scoop on the birth records I mentioned yesterday to the lists: 1. Only the Shenandoah VA records came in - not the Rockingham, so those I am still waiting for. 2. The Shenandoah records are births from 1853 through 1892. 3. The names are on a 35mm microfilm photo reel of the original records. 4. The original records were on 2-page, ledger-size sheets (I think approx 8.5 x 14" each sheet), each with about 40 names. There are over 300 pages on the film. I think it was numbered every other page. 5. The records are organized into sections by birth year; within each birth year section into districts (usually townships); and within each township into names sorted by child's (so father's) last name - usually. Sometimes the last name is written first, sometimes last, in the person's name column. 6. The records all show: Date of birth Child's full name Place of birth Father's full name Father's occupation Mother's full name (Many times the married surname - NOT the maiden surname) Person reporting the birth and their relation Misc data about the child such as sex, race, birth problems, etc 7. The writing varies, just like on census films, between unreadable to readable. Generally, the records consist of worse handwriting, and much smaller handwriting, than census films. Many of them are just not readable unless you already know the names involved. Some records were photographed badly, but most are acceptable. 8. At 40 people each page, that means approx 12,000 names. 9. The records are hard to find things on. Knowing the year and the township narrows searches down to several pages which take about 5-8 minutes to scan over. Knowing just the year narrows the search down to 10-15 pages, sometimes more, that take about 20 minutes to scan over. 10. It took me 1.5 hours to go from 1853 to 1871 in examining the film for 1 surname. It would take longer, of course, because of more hits, to search for many names at once. Just like census films, you do get better at understanding each district registrar's handwriting, the longer you work the film. So - I took note of all the surnames that were sent me and I will look up those that I have time to do. The film needs to be sent back Mar 6, maybe I can renew it a few weeks. The Rockingham film, like I said, is not in yet. I received over 60 requests for lookups totaling about 75 surnames. Obviously too much for me to look up at the library on my spare time, so I need to talk to the Shenandoah GenWeb page people to see if a photocopying effort here is the better way to go - affording then a longer time to have volunteers go over the records and transcribe them. Photocopies of one sheet of names MAY take up to 4 xrox copies, depending upon how clear the names appear when reduced to one-page long size copies. Remember I said that the handwriting is very small. The photocopies are negatives - not positives - the handwriting is white on dark gray background. Best case is 2 copies per birth page x 300 pages = 600 copies. Worse case is twice that. At a copy per minute (I suppose), that's 600 minutes or 10 hours. The library would have to cooperate in being ready for that kind of effort. I usually experience a 5% waste due to exposure changes from record to record require a second attempt be made on a copy every now an then. Since somepages are very readable compared to others - just doing those years first might produce a quick product that would have to be augmented later with the harder to copy pages. These films came on VA interlibrary loan. I think any regional library in VA can order them up. I'll be back in touch with the list soon. Bye Kerry Butler kbutler@biztech.net
