Dear Researchers: I am trying to find the place of death and burial place of ancestors who lived in Rockingham Co, Va in the late 1700's and early 1800's. "According to what I learned from the Surname-Origins list, below is > what I understand to be the origin of the Dove name." > > 1)A person of English background could actually have the name "Dove" > before he came to this country and would continue to use the name > Dove. > > 2)A person of German background whose name had been Toup or Doub or > Taube or Daube might change his name to Dove when he/she came to this > country. I was inquiring about a town called Bergton, VA, which had been called Dovesville previously which precipitated my looking into the name, "Dove. Thank you all for helping me out. Now if I could find out why my g grandmother was named Rosa Dove (middle name) Bent (maiden name). She married my g grandfather, Henry Brannon, in Gilmer or Doddridge County, WV. I'm not exactly sure where her parents, the Bents were from, but her grandfather was James Broadbelt. It was one of those things where the children of James Broadbelt had an argument and one boy called himself Bent and the other called himself Belt. But back to Dove, I have never seen that name in my genealogy connected with her or any of my family before. I know it must be a family name. Thanks for listening. Dee Toms Brook, VA >
Dee, According to the book "The Dove Family of Rockingham County, Virginia", by Lewis H. Yankey, 1991, page 1, the village was originally named after Henry Dove, the 1st Dove settler in Rockingham/Augusta County: "Henry (Toup, Doub) Dove is the first Dove settler we can trace in Rockingham County, Virginia. So far little is known of Henry "Toup" Dove's ancestors. Tradition is that he migrated with his family from Germany to America by way of New York and to Loudoun Co., VA by way of Pennsylvania, Maryland to Loudoun County, VA. The first accout of him is that he lived near William and Thomas Jackson in 1765 in Loudoun Co., VA. He came to Brocks Gap northwest Rockingham Co., VA (then in Augusta County, VA), became a large landowner, lived a few hundre yards from where the village of Dovesville was founded. Dovesville's name was later changed to West Gap and today (1980) is known as Bergton." Henry Dove (?-1801) bought land in the Dovesille/Bergton area as early as 1777. He owned a mill there. (Dovesville is now known as Bergton, VA, and is in the northwest part of Rockingham County) Henry had 3 sons who stayed in the Dovesville area - George, Jacob, and Frederick. George was the high sheriff of Rockingham County for a number of years. He could speak and write English as well as German. The first Post Office at Dovesville was established in 1850 with Ulrick Wittig as Postmaster. For about a year from 1923-1924 Dovesville's name was briefly changed to West Gap, but on Jan. 24, 1924 it was changed again to Bergton. If you have ancestors from DOVESVILLE or the Brocks Gap area, try to come to BROCKS GAP HERITAGE DAY on Sat., April 8 at Fulks Run Elementary School. We'll have 100+ posters of old photos of many of the Dovesville, Criders, Fulks Run families plus schools & churches. All my personal library books of family, local & regional histories will be at the school for folks to use for research. If you have old photos, Bibles, deeds, letters, etc. of Brocks Gap families, please bring them along to let us copy them for future books & posters on the families. (We copy them on the spot & they never leave your possession). Other researchers & authors of Brocks Gap families will be there with their books to sell. Hope to see you at Heritage Day! Pat Turner Ritchie Researcher of Brocks Gap area of Rockingham Co, VA. Includes families of Albrite, Baker, Basore, Cherryholm, Fawley, Fink, Sonifrank, Caplinger, Crider, Custer, Dove, Fulk, Hottinger, Lantz, Mongold, Nesselrodt, Riggleman, Shaver, Sirk/Zirk, Souder, Southerly, Turner, Wittig, Whetzel, Yankey, & others.
According to "The Heartland-Rockingham County" by Nancy Hess: " The post office was named for the many families of Doves who lived there. Because of the similarity of the name to Doversville, the Postal Department said the name would have to be changed. West Gap was chosen because of the first settler, Thomas West, but many of the people didn't like the name Gap. within a year or so it was changed to Bergton. Apparently there was no significant reason for the name, only a suggestion." Hope that helps, Martha Dee Randall wrote: > Does anyone know the history of this town, why it was called Dovesvile > and then changed. Does anyone know the history of this town, why it was called Dovesvile and then changed. I'm mainly interested in the name Dovesville. You can post my answer to the list,if you want. Thank you. Sincerely, Dee Toms Brook, VA

Cindy SPH Miller or DR Samuel Patrick Henry Miller is my great grand father. He was born in 1834 and died in 1895. He spent his entire life in Rockingham County and was the owner of the SPH Miller Saw Mill. Our line, his 2nd Great Grand Father Adam Miller left Pa ca 1726 and settled in/around the current town of Elkton, VA in Rockingham Co. This Miller line is still represented in Elkton/Rockingham Co area. I have no specific information regarding who else may have been involved with his Saw Mill operations and would welcome any information you have. I have more information on this line and willing to share if you see a fit. Regards, Claud Miller Sanford Bowie Md.
Does anyone have any information on the S.P.H. Miller & Co.? There is a copy of a mortgage for one steam saw mill recorded 19 Nov 1873 in Orange, VA (lost original was dated 6 Jan 1868) between James Huffman of Page Co., John H. [ ? ] of Rockingham Co., on one part and the S.P.H. Miller & Co. of Rockingham Co. I would like to know what Millers (or others) were involved in the company. The copy was recorded in the Orange Deed Bk. about the same time Millers out of PA. settled in Orange. Wonder if there is some connection? Thank you for your help. Cindy May arthurjh@direcpc.com

Actually, a good quality CD-ROM R/W drive is available for less than $200. Best Buys has one on sale now for only $179. I recommend a R/W drive as well. Most any of the computer stores carry them for less than $200. When you back up please keep a copy off site as well. A house fire will destroy back-ups as well. Hello all, Advice from someone else who has lost everything and had to start over - back up your database and keep a copy on every computer you use. I have a backup copy at work and since we have multiple computers at home, I have a copy on each of them. Every time I make a single change, I create a new backup. It's a terrible thing to lose all that work - but only takes a few minutes at most to make that backup. If you have a CD R/W, use that rewritable disc that comes with the drive for this purpose. I hope you can easily re-create your database. Thank you for the wonderful responses. Please, send everything on Thomas OLIVER and his children. I did not print it because I had not yet proved he was my kin. Also, please, send anything you have on his Uncle David LOFFLAND who he lived with in Loudoun in 1777. I can't find that LOFFLAND there at that time. Only a different one that had a strange name. Could be they CALLED him David? Your assistance has been tremendous! Thanks very much, backing up, Kim OLIVERkid@aol.com

I havent uploaded mine yet (still getting ready grin). But Ive been keeping the information as it comes out: The homepage is <http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com> ---------- Did your ancestor fight in the Civil War? Upload your GEDCOM to RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi> then use a Post-em to add such interesting details to your ancestors' records. ------------- You can participate in the WorldConnect project even if you have input only a few generations of your family tree into your genealogy software program. If you don't use a computer program to organize and store your information, but would like to learn more about some of the options, see "Using Technology to Dig Up Roots," lesson three of RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees <http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm> ------------- 3-15-2000 GEDCOMs serve as complete backups for genealogy files. It is the perfect backup system since it is stored away from their own computer and their own house (in case of theft or fire) BUT, when the submitters try to remove portions of their data to "protect" the living BEFORE allowing WorldConnect to do its job of cleaning or removing [information about] the living, they also destroy a portion of the database that they could be preserving in case of emergency should they need to download it as a backup to restore their files. So, in other words, don't "clean the living" from your GEDCOM before uploading it to WorldConnect -- let WorldConnect clean it for you. The "uncleaned" GEDCOM is preserved and a new "cleaned" GEDCOM is used for displaying in WorldConnect. -------------- WORLDCONNECT ENHANCEMENTS. <http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/> The new version of the WorldConnect User Setup/Edit program is in production. This new version internally approximates missing birth information and uses that data to clean the GEDCOM files. In addition, WorldConnect users now have the choice of using a Standard or an Advanced interface. ------------ ROOTSWEB REVIEW: 2 February 2000, EXCUSES For Not Uploading Your Gedcom To The Rootsweb Worldconnect Project. Someone Might Steal My Research. WorldConnect provides you with the ability to restrict downloads of your GEDCOM either completely or to a specified number of generations. My Source Notes Will Be Lost. WorldConnect accepts and displays the text notes that are associated with each entry in a GEDCOM. My Gedcom Contains Sensitive Information On Living People. WorldConnect provides you with a wide variety of options to restrict display of data on living individuals or to remove that data entirely from your GEDCOM. I Don't Have Time To Upload My Gedcom. Uploading a GEDCOM is a simple five-minute process. To upload, go to <http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igmuser.cgi>, choose an account name and password, provide a title for the GEDCOM and hit the BROWSE button under Upload Options to locate the GEDCOM on your hard disk. Once you have chosen a file to upload, the process proceeds automatically. There are many options relating to uploading a GEDCOM; however, the default settings are the best place to start. You can edit these settings at any time after the GEDCOM is uploaded. It Takes Hours Of Connection Time To Upload A Gedcom. Our users have told us that WorldConnect has by far the fastest upload times and most reliable operation of any GEDCOM hosting facility on the Web. RootsWeb is open 24 hours per day. Upload your GEDCOM at night just before you go to bed. I Don't Know How To Create A Gedcom File Using My Genealogy Software. Instructions on how to create a GEDCOM using the major genealogy software applications are located at <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/wc2.html>. Creating a GEDCOM is easy and quick, so do it now while you are thinking about it. I Already Have Uploaded A Gedcom To Worldconnect. You can upload as many different GEDCOMs to WorldConnect as you like, although you must create a different account for each GEDCOM you upload. Someone May Misappropriate My Gedcom Source Notes. The WorldConnect software has a variety of upload options that allow the user to remove sources and/or notes from a GEDCOM. Someone May Download My Gedcom And Sell It. Your entire GEDCOM is not available for download. You can determine how much, if any, of your file can be downloaded. The program supports optional subset download via the "Allow User GEDCOM Download" option. Selecting "no" for that option means other researchers can only look at the displays of your file and cannot download anything. -----Original Message----- Lynne, would you post the address for uploading our gedcom? ------ Original Message Rootsweb suggests uploading our family trees as a way to have a backup. If we lose it all, we can go to our upload and download the whole thing. This is also a good reason to keep our uploaded family tree updated. Then if we need it, it's all there.
