    1. [VAROCKIN] (no subject)
    2. Hello again everyone, When I sent the email about my databases just over an hour and a half ago I had no idea the number of responses that I would receive! Everyone has been great emailing me with their gratitude & kind words and even to let me know what was actually wrong with the databases. I started sending personal messages to each person that had emailed me, but I can't keep up with all of you :) So I just want to give a big THANKS to everyone that took the time to read what I had to say and especially to those who emailed me. I hope that no one took any offense to anything that I wrote because it certainly wasn't meant to be offensive at all. Feel free to keep emailing me with any questions, problems or comments. Thanks again!! Beth Fridley

    1. [VAROCKIN] New to the list!
    2. I am a fairly new subscriber to the Rockingham County Rootsweb list (but not new to Rootsweb or Genealogy) and I thought that this would be a good time for me to introduce myself. My name is Beth Fridley and I am the one that has transcribed the Virginia Birth and Death records for Ancestry.com. Although I never saw the messages myself, it has been brought to my attention that there were several posted regarding the Rockingham County databases being incorrect that also said, "be careful of this information". I just want to reassure everyone that I am as thorough as humanly possible when I transcribe these databases. This is going on my 3rd year transcribing records for Ancestry and though I love doing it, it is not always an easy job reading someone else's handwriting from a poor microfilm copy as many of you should have experienced while doing your own research. The databases that I submit are not scanned images- every single bit of that information is typed by me. I put so much effort into transcribing, that I can not seem to make time to trace my own family tree anymore. There are times when I have to skip a name or even pages of names because the copies that I make are just not legible enough for me to read. I do not like to skip pages simply because I know how discouraging it is for me to search the databases online and to come up with a "0 results" message. I want everyone to be able to find the name they're looking for in my databases. Whenever I receive Ancestry's daily news email stating that one of my databases has been posted online I immediately check it to make sure that it looks right and notify Ancestry if something is wrong, but obviously I can't check every name that has been entered. If you do find any errors and want to contact me feel free to email me personally (BFrid31@cs.com) and I'll do what I can to fix the problem or you can report them directly to Ancestry.com. When emailing me all I ask is that you be understanding to the fact that I am human and that I do make mistakes, but they are certainly not intentional. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this! Beth Evans-Fridley Tracing: ARMENTROUT, FRIDLEY, HENSLEY, LAM, SHIFFLETT (various spellings), & WILLIAMS in ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA.

    3. My ancestor's land was on Daniel James Branch. I'm pretty sure they're one and the same. Mary Marie Arrington, in Mountain Valley People, says that Daniel James Branch headed near Fridley's Gap, down off the Massanutten, not too far north of Peaked Mountain, and flowed west to Smith's Creek. Along with three other streams, the whole drainage system is referred to now on maps as War Branch. Cort Sims wrote: > Can anyone tell me where James' Branch of Smith Creek is located? 1. [VAROCKIN] South Fork of the Potomac
    2. The South Fork of the Potomac is not the same as the South Fork of the Shenandoah and never was. The Shenandoah River, at least the North Fork of it, is listed by that name on deeds as early as 1752. Where Fort Republic is I don't know but there is a town named Port Republic in Rockingham Co. Va. Port Republic is at the confluence of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and Mill Creek, one of probably 50 streams bearing that name in Virginia alone. The South Branch of the Potomac in general parallels Rte. US 220 south to Moorefield, WV where it divides into the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac and the Moorefield River which is generally referred to as the South Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac. The SF of the SB of the Potomac headwaters in Highland County Va. This should clarify or totally confuse the issue. ;) Vince Smith Regarding: Lynne may have something there. I have a deed dated 1763 at the junction of Mill Creek and the South Fork of the Potomac River. It makes much more sense if it is near Fort Republic, Rockingham County than in West Virginia. Does anybody know if the Shenandoah River used to be called the South Fork of the Potomac? Hugh Mottern

    3. The Shenandoah River flows into the Potomac River at Harpers Ferry, WV. But the Shenandoah River is not the South Branch. The Potomac River is separate from the Shenandoah until they meet at Harpers Ferry. The Potomac flows through what is now several counties in West Virginia. The South Branch of the Potomac flows through Pendleton County, Hardy Co. and Hampshire County. To make it more confusing, there is a North Fork of the South Branch and a South Fork of the South Branch. I'm guess there is a North Branch of the Potomac River somewhere, but I am more familiar with the South Branch. It would be worthwhile to get a detailed WV state map, especially if you are working with deeds. The river description will help narrow down where your ancestor lived. I have a copy of "West Virginia County Maps" by Puetz Place, Lndon Station, WI 53944, but I'm sure there are others. Pat Ritchie
