Where was the Emanuel/St. Paul's Lutheran Church located in Rockingham county? Is it still in existence?
Hi, I typed the 1850 Rockingham census book for the Rock. Hist. Soc. The families I agonized over the most were Simmers/Summers/Simmons. Sometimes even David & Daniel can look alike. The capital I and J were about the same. Wasn't too bad for a first name like Jacob or Isaac, but when it was a middle initial, it was anyone's call. I learned later at a seminar in Williamsburg that at that time those letters were made identically. No wonder it was tough. I know I never complain anymore, either, about indexes or transcriptions. Maggie, Clerk of Circuit Court in 1860 was A. St. Clair Sprinkel, 1852-1869 according to John Wayland. Think that could be the name? As I made a stupid mistake I am without all email and my entire data entry (all the genealogy I entered this summer). If anyone has sent me emails of use to me and you can find them in your outbox I would greatly appreciate you resending them to me. I will be out until the beginning of the week a week from Monday since I will be attending the Republican National Convention. Thanks, Justin s484647@gettysburg.edu
Harriet, You are a gem! Has to be. The wretched enumerator clearly wrote H. StC Sh***kel and no sign of a p. And I just found him at Judy's site. A. St. Clair Sprinkel. A long time ago someone posted a complaint about an enumerator's handwriting to one of my lists. Quick as a wink someone wrote back, "You hold him down and I'll jump on him". Loved it then and love it even more now. Maggie
I am transcribing the 1860 Rockingham County census for Rootsweb. (Never again will I criticize a census index.) Judy Campbell's Rockingham County cemetery site has been has been a huge help. I also consult the 1860 index--but don't always agree. Transcribers are taught to only enter what the enumerator writes, but there is a comment space where one enters the correct spelling if it is known, or an explanation of the numerous "*" 's I use in place of a letter. There is one name I simply cannot decipher, but hopefully someone can provide the name. His first name is listed as H. StC (the t could be a t or an r) The surname starts with an S. It could be Shrinkel--or almost anything. The big clue is that his occupation is listed as Clk of C. Court. Hopefully someone has a reference book that lists the Rockingham County officials. Family members include wife Julie and children Sally, Ada and Henry. If anyone has the 1860 census, he is listed on page 18, handwritten page #354, household 130, line 5. I would appreciate any help. I am pleased to announce that the Mills of Rockingham County, VA, Vol. 3 by Janet and Earl Downs with Pat Ritchie is available as of Friday, July 28 from the Harrisonburg Rockingham Historical Society. The book has 700 pages, is hardback, and is indexed. The 700 photographs are of mills, former mill sites, millers, and rural Rockingham County farm scenes from long ago. There are photographs of flour and feed bags of all sizes and descriptions plus the finished articles made from the sacks. There are 4 sections. The first is documentation on 28 more mill sites discovered since the completion of Vol. 2. Twelve of these are in Plains District. The second section features "Memories by the Sackful" exhibits at four Valley museums in 1997 which inspired the first mill book. There are several articles on the history of feed sacks and how homemakers stretched their budgets by making clothing and linen from feedsacks. Sections 3&4 contain additional information and memorabilia on 53 of the mills in Volumes 1 and 2. The books are $45 each plus $7.50 for shipping. Virginia residents, please add $2.03 per book for sales tax. Send orders to Harrisonburg Rockingham Historical Society P.O. Box 716 Dayton, VA 22821 The Historical Society's web site is www.heritagecenter.com but it's not yet been updated for the newest book. If you have any questions about ordering, contact the Historical Society 540 879-2616 Thanks, Pat Ritchie
Tunis is located on Runion Creek (formerly known as Tunis Creek), north of Brocks Gap. Runion Creek empties into the North Fork of the Shenandoah River midway between Cootes Store and Fulks Run and there is a chimney rock near the mouth of the creek. If you follow the stream north to where it forks around Suppinlick Mountain and take the west fork you will get to Tunis, after a few miles. I believe that it is actually just over the Rockingham County line, in Shenandoah County. I believe that it was, probably, named after a Holland Dutchman from the New York City area as there was a Dutch family, by the name of Tunis there, which intermarried with the Runion (Runyon/Runyan) family in New Jersey. Tunis refers to Tunis Creek, now known as Runions Creek. The creek starts inside Brocks Gap and flows into the North Fork of the Shenandoah River at Brocks Gap. Runions Creek area is about 4 miles west of Broadway, VA off Hwy 259. I think folks who live there now get their mail at the Fulks Run, VA Post Office. An even earlier name for Tunis was Unes Creek. There was a Post Office called Tunis from 1900 to 1907. Postmasters were John H. Custer, Amos Estep, Charles W. Williams, and Noah W. Crider. In 1907 the office was discontinued, and mail was sent to Cootes Store, VA which is right outside Brocks Gap. Prominent families on Tunis/Runions Creek were Runion, Tusing, Biller, some Custers, and others. Hope this helps. Pat Turner Ritchie Researcher of Brocks Gap area of Rockingham Co, VA. Hi, Does anyone know the source one can check for a list of Hessian soldiers who came to America to fight for the British cause and then defected to fight for the American cause either with the French soldiers or the patriot soldiers? I was recently told that the location of Fort Hoover has been more exactly pinpointed. If my source was correct, it was actually only a mile or so outside of present day Singers Glen, at the foot of Green Hill (and right behind what was my grandmother's house <g>) According to the person who is now living in my grandmother's house, they have found evidence of the old fort in that area. If anyone would like more exact directions just drop me a note. Does anyone on this list know where Tunis, Virginia (supposedly in Rockingham Co.) is/was? Also, can anyone supply me with the possible location of Fort Hoover. I think it was near Turleytown. Thanks.
The list you copied is from John W. Wayland's "Virginia Valley Records." I have a copy of the reprint from Genealogical Publishing Co. in Baltimore, 1978. It was originally published in 1930. The marriage lists are on pages 7-41. Thought it might be helpful to know this. Pat Ritchie
Meredith I would appreciate you looking up the name KIRTLEY or KERTLEY on the list. Thank you so much for your help. Lee
I have been looking thru some old records from Rockingham Co and realized I had a copy of the marriage records between 1795 and 1825. I don't know how complete they are ( couldn't find my family in them) but would be willing to do look-ups. I copied them out of a Rockingham County history abt 15 years ago (neglected to get the source!!) At the head of the list it says: "On pages 444-448 of Wayland's History of Rockingham County is a list of marriages from 1778-1794. The list below is a continuation". Meredith DeBuse
Dear List, I recently found names I thought might be mine at this Canadian site. I paid for the info but, sad to say they are not my relatives. There are some good leads on their list, cost is reasonable and they are prompt in their reply. I saw no restriction on my sharing the info so am posting it in it's entirety in hopes it may help someone else ---------- From: Ken Soloway[SMTP:kpsolo@home.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2000 12:00 PM To: Classic@shentel.net Subject: WOOD transcripts from inGeneas Dear Patricia Wood Stonemetz: We have received your payment for transcriptions from the inGeneas Database, thank you.
