Greetings, Are there any Coffman researchers on this list who has a Henry Coffman who lived in Rockingham or Pendleton County 1800-1825, If so, I am trying to tie up some loose ends and would like to ask a couple questions about this family. Thank you Ronna Cunningham
Greetings, I am searching for parents and siblings of my ggg grandparents, Jacob Dean and Judith Cocks (Cock, Cox, and sometimes Cook). According to a "Portrait and Biographical Sketch of Des Moines County IA, 1888", Jacob Dean was born in Rockingham County,17 March 1799, and Judith Cox Dean was born in Pendleton County, January 13, 1797. This couple was married by Ferdinand Lair in Pendleton County, 30 September 1819, with Jas. Johnson signing as guardian for Jacob, and Robt. Cock as bondsman. They moved to Lewis County and are in the 1820, 1830 & 1840 census there and also in land records. They moved to Des Moines County IA in 1844 and are buried there. Their known children are: 1) Rachel born abt 1820 married Adam C. Shreves (s/o Joseph and Elizabeth Brake Whitecotton Shreves) in Lewis Co., VA/WV 2. George Washington born abt 1825 married Doschean Foster 3. Lucinda H. born about 1824 married Samuel Moyers in IA 4. 1 male unknow born between 1825-1830 5 Johnson born about 1828 married Mary Ann Walker in IA 6. Elizabeth born about 1830 married Andrew Myers in IA 7. Silas born November 10 1835, married Mary Elizabeth Martin (d/o Isaac Martin and Katherine Griffin Martin). This marriage in Schuyler Co., IL. -MY LINE Should say in moving to IA with my line is; Daniel Dean and wife, Mary. Silas Dean and wife, Antinette, Lair Dean and wife, Sarah, Marshall Irwin and wife Martha Dean, Samuel Fox and wife, also a Dean, and many of the children of Lair Dean amd Mahala Crites; i. e. James Dexter who married Lucinda Shreves (Daughter of Rachel Dean Shreves) William Lorenzo who married Elizabeth Reger etc. Also, In Schuler County, IL, where my gg grandparents were married are sons of John Dean and Catherine Heavener ie Perry, Elias, and John Dean (married to Hulda). So, I would like to correspond with anyone researching these surnames in these counties. And would like to know if anyone has information as to how the Johnson family fits into this. I have run into several Johnson/ Dean marriages in the state of VA. Wonder if this should connect somehow. Thank you for your time Ronna Cunningham
Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/336 Surname: ------------------------- I have a lot of Price in my data base (I even have an Edith Susan Price). I would say that 90% of all my Price family is buried at Fairview Church of the Brethren Cemetery very near Tenth Legion in Rockingham County. The only Jewell that I have is that of Tollivar Jewell who married into my Higgs family. I have his children, but not any of the wives of the male children. Sorry that I couldn't help you more. I will do a little research into the name and if I find anything more, I will post for you.
Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/335 Surname: ------------------------- Mt. Valley UCB cemetery is different from Singers Glen. Mt. Valley cemetery is located on Mt. Valley Road and technically the address is Broadway, Va. It is actually located between the Old Bethel (Armentrout) cemetery close to Keezletown and the Arkton area of Rockingham County, Va. Singers Glen is quite a distance away off of Rt 259, the main route from Rockingham County, Va. into Hardy County, W.Va.
Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/329 Surname: ------------------------- Yes. Who are you looking for? There are DAR books on cemeteries in the Rockingham County Public Library. They also have the cemetery books by Borden (that are now out of print). The Dayton/Rockingham County Historical Society also have listings on the cemeteries in the area. My cousin and I have been to most of the large and small cemeteries throughout that area. The main cemeteries near Tenth Legion are: Lacey Springs; Fairview Church of the Brethren; Mt. Valley UCB; Old Bethel (Armentrout); and Keezletown. Plus there are countless family cemetries in the area. You can find a lot of cemeteries at Mt View Research by Judy Campbell. The link is listed below. Lynda Link: Mt. Miller BOWMAN (served in 6th Regiment, Coleman's, Aug-Dec 1814, Virginia Militia, War of 1812) (may have been born either about 1787, Rockingham Co., VA or 26 Aug 1780, Rockingham Co., VA) and Phebe HARRISON, married 24 Dec 1812, Rockingham Co., VA. Phebe was born 1791 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA. There were at least two more children of this marriage. Any help out there? Mike Smith Email: smithm1@dialcorp.com SmithMichL@aol.com

John Whitmore died April - May 1846 in Rockingham Co. I found a "re-recorded" will with the notation (burned) for him. "Several children". Wife Mary. The children named were Polly wife of Thomas McGuire (married in Rockingham 30 Nov 1815) Betsy wife of John Flory (mine - and no marriage record found) Nancy wife of Jonathan Miller (married in Rockingham Dec 1826) deceased son Abraham. (was he married and when did he die?) I can find a John Whitmore born about 1770 on the 1810-20-30-40 Rockingham Co. census. His neighbor Gabriel Heatwold and his wife were named executors of his will. Later the administrator is given as John Whitmore. There seems to be two Whitmore groups in Rockingham. Can anyone tell me where this John belongs? The Millers were from PA and the Florys are also from PA. Betty Carson
Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/315 Surname: ------------------------- Tenth Legion is about 4-5 miles South of New Market, Va. on Rt. 11. It is located in Rockingham County and there is no town to actually designate it as a city. It merely consists of Rt 11 and Arkton Rd with four corners having Hauns Service Station on one side. An old white house on another side (my grandparents house). An old boarded up school and another side, and what's left of an old church on the 4th corner. In front of the old church is a sign stating Tenth Legion. Of course some of the surrounding farm houses are considered Tenth Legion. If you continue on from New Market towards Harrisonburg on Rt 11 and you reach Lacey Springs, Va., you have gone too far and have already passed through Tenth Legion.
The 27th Annual Derrow Family Reunion will be held on Sunday, August 20, from 12 to 5, at Westover Park (west of Harrisonburg, off Route 33), Shelter No. 1. Bring a vegetable dish, chicken, ham, rolls, drinks, dessertor whatever you canto share, and join family and friends for this enduring tradition. Well plan on eating once everyone arrives...about 1:00 or so. Dont forget your lawn chairs and any pictures youd like to share with the group! Everyone loves to look at pictures. Bring yours! Russell Derrow started the Derrow Family Reunion in 1973, primarily for the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren of Emanuel E. and Fannie Rebecca Buhl Derrow. Over the years, weve expanded our scope of relations by defining the family beginning with its American progenitor, Levy Derrow (also known in German as Levin Doerge or Doerrie) and his wife, Anne Wye Derrow. Mostbut not allof the participants of past reunions descend from their son, Peter Derrow, and his wife, Mary Ransbottom, but descendants of the other sons, George, Henry, Jacob, Levy, and William are always welcome. One of Peter and Marys sons was Peachy Derrow, who married Elizabeth Baker. Their son, Emanuel, and his wife, Fannie, were the parents of Raleigh, Lucy, Jacob, Tracy, Lincoln, Ethel, Charlie, Walter, Russell, and Ira. Five of these have descendants who attend the reunion on a regular basis.
The 3rd annual Fitzwater reunion will be held on Sat. Aug. 12 at the Fulks Run Ruritan Park, Fulks Run, VA. Bring a dish to share at noon. Bring pictures, memorabilia, etc. of the family to display. Sponsor: Anabelle Vance, Mathias, WV

With the given names of Alexander St. Clair S(whatever the last name was!), you should have an easy time of research if he connects to one of the two famous VA families headed by an Alexander St.Clair. Check genforum, also under Sinclair, to see if you can pick up your elusive ancestor mention in St. Clair/Sinclair research. Hope something is there for you!
