    3. Brocks Gap is the geographic area in the northwest corner of Rockingham Co., VA. It includes the present post offices of Fulks Run, Criders, and Bergton. If you find Broadway on the map, follow Highway 259 west to Fulks Run. The North Fork of the Shenandoah River flows through the gap in the North Mountain range called Brocks Gap. "Brocks Gap" area includes the land drained by the tributaries of the North Fork before it goes through the actual gap in the mountain. I figured it is roughly 200 square miles in area. At one time there was a post office named "Brocks Gap" but it was located outside (on the east side) of the actual gap. For a short time in the 1870s there was a township called Brocks Gap Township. There were lots of German-speaking families who lived inside Brocks Gap. The language continued in some families until my mother's time, the 1940s and 1950s. I think even in the 1960s there were some people who could speak German. One man, born about 1900, wrote that his mother did not speak English until she went to elementary school. Hope this helps. 3. The following is in response to the message posted by Howard and Beverly Miller concerning Adam MILLER, which read: "I am seeking information on the ANCESTORS of Adam Muller who settled near Elkton, Rockingham County, Va. It is known that he was baptized 17 Nov. 1703 at Schriesheim (Germany) and was the son of Johan Peter Muller and Maria Margaretta ???? of Lambsheim, but I have found no information about his parents, his grandparents, his Mother's maiden name or names of his brothers and sisters or other relatives that may also have come to America. Rumor is that one sister came with him, but I am uncertain of her name or who she married." I have been able to verify that I descend from Christian MILLER (bc. 1730 - d. 1778) and Catherine CONRAD (bc. 1743 - d. 1822), who are my ggggg grandparents. Other MILLER researchers tell me that Christian was the son of Jacob MILLER (b. 1697 - d. 1768) and Catherine MILLER (Supposedly Catherine was a MILLER also.). A Jacob MILLER died in Augusta County (now Rockingham) in 1768, because on 17 August 1768, a nuncupative (verbal) will of Jacob MILLER was ordered recorded, and his widow Catherine was appointed the administrator of the will. I have not been able to independently verify Christian's parents. However, a patent was granted to Jacob STOVER in 1733 for 5,000 acres on the southeast side of the Shenandoah River in the vicinity of present day Elkton and extending to the southwest towards Port Republic. Note that in 1733 the land was in Spotsylvania County. The patent was contingent upon STOVER settling 100 people on the land, and exactly 100 people are named in the patent, including the family of a Jacob and Catherine MILLER. Besides Jacob and Catherine, 13 other family members are listed; presumably their children. It is a well know fact that lists, such as the one cited, were padded with names of family pets and farm animals. However, it is interesting to note that one of the names listed is Christian. Other MILLER researchers have informed me that Jacob MILLER was the son of Johan Peter MUELLER and Maria Margaretha ULRICH. I have not attempted to verify this. If it is correct, it appears that Jacob and Adam MILLER were brothers. It is obvious they were contemporaries and resided in the same general area. In addition, my Christian MILLER named a son Adam. 3. Janet & Earl Downs have a chapter about Yancey Mill at Yancey Post Office in their book "Mills of Rockingham Co., VA, Vol. 3." On page 137 of that book is an article from 1901 that says Mauzy & Armentrout operated a store at McGaheysville and a "similar establishment at Yancey P.O., a thriving trade station on the Norfolk and Western Railroad." The article from the "Evening News Illustrated Trade Edition" goes on to talk about how wonderful the store was. She also has some clippings of marriages of folks from Yancey P.O., and some pages from the store ledger. Also a 1900 invoice from A. S. Yancey who had mills at Yancey and Elkton. Thought that might be interesting to you. Pat Turner Ritchie Researcher of Brocks Gap area of Rockingham Co, VA. 2. Re your comments regarding Adam Miller sister. My data indicates that Adam's sister Catrina B1699 traveled to the US with him in the early 1720's and was living in PA. I can't find my original notes but I believe she also came with him to the Elkton, Rockingham Co. I have no info on if she was married or not. Adam Miller is my 5th Great Grand Father and regretfully I have the same info you have on his ANCESTORS and can add nothing more. I'd be interested in any information you obtain on this subject. regards Claud Miller Sanford
