I was mistaken the obits for the Elkton area are NOT new for this week. I clicked on the wrong button. The Obits listed in my previous message today are in fact those for the Harrisonburg area. NOT the Elkton area. If the Valley Banner does post a web page for the 9 of November, I will post a message. Dick Bloss __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tracy-- People didn't get "quickie" marriages in 1811 or 1812 and 16 year old girls married all the time in those days. My own gr. gr. gr. grandmother eloped in 1825 in Orange County and settled in Rockingham. She was 15 years old. The elopement process at that time required pregnancy. In other words, the would- be bride became pregnant by her intended and thereby forced her father to give the previously-withheld permission for the marriage. Having an illegitimate child, she was no longer marriageable. In the case of my ancestress, and probably yours, they waited until after the baby was born to have the wedding-- probably because the problem solved itself if the child or mother didn't survive the birth. Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/492 Surname: Waldron, Keller, Waldren, Hoover, Hoever ------------------------- George Waldron and his wife Annetta moved to Virginia ca 1778 with their family. Philip Waldron a veteran of the Revolutionary War, Private in the Virginia Militia married Anna Catherine Keller; she gave birth to eight children. One of the sons became my 2nd great grandfather. Both the Waldron and Keller Families had emigrated via Pennsylvania. George's farm, on the south branch of the Potomac eventually became Pendleton County. Philip lived in Rockingham until moving to Ohio ca 1801-08. Some siblings did not move to Ohio. I am interested in contacting descendents of those Waldrons and/or Kellers.
I have a strong suspicision that my gr gr gr grandfather may have eloped, or tried to elope with my gr gr gr grandmother in Rockingham County in the year 1811 or 1812. The reason I said "tried to elope..." was that when my gr gr grandfather was born in June of 1812 my gr gr gr grandmother was not married. If she became pregnant in September of 1811, she may have run off and gotten married in the nearest county that would allow a 16 yr. old girl to marry back then. This could have happened in the fall of 1811 or maybe even in the early spring of 1812. Bottom line is that my gr gr gr grandfather married someone else in Rockingham County in October 1812. Any thoughts on where they may have gone to get a quickie marriage? Sincerely Tracy Hunter
I am interested in the land transactions of John Henry Preiss (Price) in the 1745-1760 time period. Are records available? If so, where? Thanks for your help. Walt
My 3G grandfather was Henton TALLMAN, son of William TALLMAN and Phoebe HENTON They were probably residents of Rockingham County between about 1800 and 1830. Henton TALLMAN was born in Rockingham about 30 JUN 1810. He married Amanda THOMPSON who was also born in Rockingham about 1810 Does anyone have any information on either of these families in Rockingham? Thank you very much Peter http://members.aol.com/ancestour/MASTHEAD.html http://members.aol.com/ancestour/surnames.html
I'm still chasing after Daniel JOSEPH in Augusta Co. and Rockingham Co. VA. If anybody sees anything familiar, please contact me. I don't know where Daniel JOSEPH was born but estimate his birth to 1755-1760. He served in the Augusta Co. Militia in 1779 and contributed 44 1/2 gallons of whiskey to the Revolution in 1782. In 1783 he bought property in Augusta Co. and also appeared in Rockingham Co. Court Minutes that same year. Daniel JOSEPH had married Eve HANGER, daughter of Frederick HANGER of Augusta Co., by June 15, 1784. By 1786, Daniel JOSEPH's name once again starts appearing in Rockingham Co. Court Minutes on numerous occasions. According to Augusta Co. Tax Lists, Daniel owned land in 1787, 1788, 1789, and 1790 while Eve JOSEPH was included in Rockingham Co. Tax Lists in 1786, 1787 and 1788. In July 1788, Daniel was residing at Keisletown and had been granted 'leave to keep ordinary at his house' (tavern or eating place) by Rockingham Co. Court. There was an Abraham JOSEPH family in Rockingham County about the same time. They are probably related--but how? Barbara DiMunno
Hello Listers: I just came across this information online at the Mennonite Encyclopedia site. I thought someone might be interested in it. This is the first paragraph of a biography on Joseph Funk. If you want more information, the URL is: http://www.mhsc.ca/encyclopedia/contents/F87ME.html Joseph Funk (Apr. 6, 1778-Dec. 24, 1862), of Singers Glen, Va., a pioneer Mennonite publisher and music teacher in America, established the first Mennonite printing house in the United States in 1847. He was the son of Henry Funk and Barbara Showalter, born April 6, 1778, in Berks Co., Pa., and a grandson of Bishop Henry Funck, who came to America in 1719 and became the founder of a long line of Funks. Early in his boyhood the family, 13 children, moved to Rockingham Co., Va., where Joseph spent his lifetime. He married Elizabeth Rhodes, Dec. 25, 1804, and raised five children. His second wife was Rachel Britton; they raised nine children. In 1847 Joseph Funk established a hand printing press in his log springhouse at Mountain Valley (Singers Glen), Va., which has the distinction of being the first Mennonite printing house in the United States. Funk had unusual ability in collecting songbooks, revising sacred melodies, and conducting singing schools. He and his sons organize! d singing schools by the dozens in at least eleven counties in Virginia. Pamela

I am new to this list and needs some real help. Until yesterday I was wondering if my great grandmother was an alien from Mars or some unknown galaxy. Seriously I knew she was but from documentation I have received she was born in four different states and in three decades. New found information had my great grandmother ELLEN F. FORD being born May 1856 in Virginia. Now that I know she didn't just pop into this world or come on a flying saucer I am looking for information on her family, parents, and siblings. If you have Ford info please check for her. Also I need a CENSUS look up for 1860 and 1870. She married in April 1872 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Any help is greatly appreciated. If you look for her in census records you have access to please let me know where you looked so I will know at least where she is not at in Virginia. Thanks you for you help. Patricia

Hello; Canterberry families show up in Fairfax County records as early as the 1740s. Perhaps earlier. These families moved through many counties or wound up in counties as the boundaries changed. Does anyone have any info on these families 1740 (or before) and following through to the early 1800s? Thank you for your time and attention.

Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Wills Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/RockinghamWill/22 Surname: Earman, Wheelbarger ------------------------- ************************************************************ The following document describes a lawsuit filed in Rockingham County, Virginia between Sally Earman Wheelbarger against the administrators of Mychel Earman, Sr.'s will, her brothers, John and Joseph Earman. ************************************************************ Sally Earman Wheelbarger vs. John and Joseph Earman Undated (Written sometime after 1823) To the Honorable Daniel Smith Judge of the Circuit Superior Court of Law & Chancery for Rockingham County. Your oratrix Sally Wheelbarger wife of Mathias Wheelbarger of the County of Augusta by her next friend Samuel Seitz, humbly complaining, showeth unto your Honor, that her Father Michael Earman late of the County of Rockingham departed this life many years since seized & passed (?) of real & personal estate having a last will & testament which was admitted to record in the County Court of Rockingham County, a copy of which is here exhibited as a part of this bill marked W. In the year 1823 John & Joseph Earman brothers of your oratrix and the Executors named in said will qualified and took upon themselves the burden of its execution. It will be seen that said Executors were directed by said will to sell the real & personal estate for the best price and after paying the debts of the Testator, divide the balance equally between his seven children including your Oratrix, it will also appear that said Executors were required by said will to hold the share coming to your Oratrix and to pay over to her the sum of Thirty dollars annually. This provision was made by said Testator for the special benefit of your Oratrix and in order to secure the share allotted to her, to her separate use free from the claims or debts of her husband, who had been imprudent and was then known to be largely indebted. Your Oratrix charges that the portion of said estate to which she was entitled under said will exceeded six hundred Dollars as she has been informed no part of which has been paid to her except one cow and some little articles that she received from the Executors in all not more than Thirty dollars. Your Oratrix is advised that upon a proper construction of said will said Executors must be regarded as holding one seventh of said estate as trustees for her and that she now has the right notwithstanding the lapse of time to call upon them to account for the same and execute the trust confided to them by said Testator. And though your Oratrix is and has been for many years in very needy circumstances, said Executors have wholly refused to pay over to her any part of said trust fund and as a justification of their course say that they have paid over the whole of said share towards the discharge of the debts of the husband of your Oratrix and pretend that it has been done with the consent and approbation of your Oratrix. Your Oratrix is very ignorant of business transactions and cannot read or write, it is therefore possible that she may have been prevailed upon to put her mark to some instrument of writing, without understanding its purpose, by which said Executors may have been authorized to pay over to the creditors of her husband or perhaps to some other person her share of said estate. But your Oratrix charges that she never intended to make such a disposition of said fund, and even if said Executors can produce any such authority she is advised that it is not binding upon her and cannot exonerate said Executors from the responsibilities of accounting for said trust fund. In tender consideration whereof and as your Oratrix is wholly within (unreadable word) except in a Court of Equity, she prays that said John & Joseph Earman may be compelled to render before the master Commissioner of this court an account of the fund directed by said will to be paid over to her annually with the interest that may have accrued on it and that the balance for which they may be held responsible be secured to the separate use of your Oratrix in accordance with the intention of said Testator and the provisions of said will and that the same be decreed & be paid over to your Oratrix at such times & in such proportions as this Honorable Court shall deem reasonable & right under all the circumstances. To that end therefore she prays that John Earman, Joseph Earman and Matthias Wheelbarger may be made defendants to this Bill and compelled to make full, true and just answers to the allegations herein contained on their corporal oaths to the best of their knowledge & belief and that your Oratrix may now have such other and further relief as her case may require & as in duty bound she will ever pray. Sally Wheelbarger By her Consel ************************************************************ Supplementary Document Dated February 2, 1826 Know all men by these presents.... That we Mathias Wheelbarger & Sally Wheelbarger here of Augusta County & State of Virginia do firmly agree to give up the whole of our rights and claims of my Father M. Earmans legacy left to me by his last will and Testament unto Jno. Crickenbarger his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns to which payment will and truly to be now made we bind ourselves for & (unreadable) the whole their Executors-Administrators and each of us firmly by these presents sealed with our seals, dated this 2nd of Feby 1826. Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of me, Christian Early Matthias Wheelbarger Sally (X her mark) Wheelbarger ************************************************************
