Mr. Bob, I think the Valley Turnpike (now US 11/I-81) was not the same as the Rockingham Turnpike (now US 33). The original, public records of these turnpikes are maintained by the Library of Virginia. These are very interesting records, which include surveys, info on construction, pay stubs for workers, maps, contracts, tolls, traffic counts (most "travellers" were animals) etc. Wilmer L. I though someone might be interested in the answers. I received information about certain toll gates but as it turns out there may been many gates. I received this from Linda: In 1834, the Valley Turnpike Company was incorporated; this included the road from Staunton to Winchester. Stock was sold at $25 per share. The road was to be maintained by charging a toll of one cent per mile afor pleasure vehicles and prorated for stock and wagons. Tollgates were spaced every five miles. A pole was placed across the road about three feet from the ground. A tall wooded box filled with rocks was placed at one end for this pole to rest on. A forked post was implanted in the ground with the pole bolted to it. A rope was tied to the small end of the pole, so the gate keeper could pull it down and fasten it to a hasp in a post at the opposite end. The definition for this device is a "turnpike"; thus the road received the same name. Gatekeepers were paid $10 per month and house rent-free.................(pp.18-19, The Heartland, by Nancy B. Hess). Thanks, Robert

Hello List, John ADKINS and spouse, Elizabeth ADKINS, lived in the same section, twp and range, in Hancock Co IN as my gg-grandfather, Thomas KENNEDY, in 1854. This couple signed a document the same day as my gg-grandfather, Thomas K. signed the same *type* of document which I *think* was selling a portion of their land to an attorney to raise money for a court appeal in behalf of Thomas K. My question is: Does anyone on this list have an ADKINS who was in any way associated with KENNEDY. Thomas KENNEDY was b. in VA abt 1790. I find him first in Huntington Twp, Brown Co OH, in 1830. He purchased land in Hancock Co IN in 1834 and is shown on Buck Crk Twp, Hancock Co IN census of 1840, spouse Mary, b. abt 1806, in OH. I have the names of his six of his children. Sarah A. mar George HUDSON; Eliza Ann, mar. Christopher RULEY; Mary Jane, mar. 1st John UNDERWOOD, 2nd Frederick HENDRICKS, in 1859. Mary Jane and Frederick are my g-grandparents. There are three minor children listed for Thomas KENNEDY and spouse, Mary, on the 1850 census of Hancock Co IN. They are Nancy Susan, James Levi and Francis Newland KENNNEDY. The middle name NEWLAND may be a clue as to a relationship. Perhaps this is the maiden name of Thomas KENNEDY's spouse, Mary. So far, I have not been successful in finding a listing of a marriage for Thomas and Mary. Suggestions and/or answers to the above would be most appreciated. Virgene in northwest Indiana
Thank you for all the replies I received . It has cleared up my confusion about the Linville and Lindale cemeteries. It is wonderful to have such helpful people on the list! Helen Harness Plain City OH, a "suburb" of Columbus
On what is now Zion Church Rd., northeast of Singers Glen, is a small cemetery a few miles southeast of Zion Church. The cemetery is by itself - no church buildings around. On the 1885 Atlas of Rockingham Co. there is shown a cemetery and a "Dunkard" Church at that location (or at least what I think is that location - the roads seem the same). Does anyone know if this is where the Brush Brethren Church was - and is this the Brush Brethren Church Cemetery? Thanks, Harriet
Yes, Lindale Mennonite has a cemetery. I am a member there. Can I do anything to help? Debbie
Helen, You asked -- I know there is a Linville Mennonite Cemetery near Edom, VA, where several of my ancestors are buried. Is there also a Lindale Mennonite Cemetery near Edom? Or would it be only Linville? There is a Lindale Mennonite Cemetery in Edom but the Linville Cemetery is in the town of Linville about five miles from Edom. Linville Cemetery, at one time, was associated with the Linville United Christian Church but now has it own board of directors. There is also a Linville Church of the Brethren Cemetery located near the town of Broadway. Lois Emswiler

Hi all. Does anyone know the denomination of a Rev. Joseph Funkhouser who married couples in about 1866-1867 in Rockingham County, Virginia ?
