In the fall, equipment was brought in to make a parking area as well as a walkway to the site. The cemetery had become overgrown and the workers will need to clear it by hand. There appears to be many graves with some marked by stones. There is also a current effort underway, by a local person, to gather info on the cemetery and farm from county records to share with the public. I am also related to the Higgs and if I can help you further, then email me at genecrazyvic@webtv.net Good luck in your research!
Posted on: Rockingham Co. Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/596 Surname: Layman Deaver Higgs Combs ------------------------- Hello Roxie, I do not know where the poor farm cemetery is located. I do have just a bit of information that may help you pinpoint when your grandfather died. My grandmother died 30 December 1918. She left 5 young children, one from another relationship. That child was given to someone else to raise. The other four remained at home with my grandfather --- who at the time was old (born in 1855). He also felt that he couldn't care for four young children the oldest being 8. He was advised to try to keep them together. They lived in the Arkton area of Rockingham County. My mother(the eldest) remembers your grandmother and her two children moving to the house (from the alms house) to take care of her and the three other siblings (Jan 1919). She remembers that your grandmother's two children were always crying. Your grandmother was only there for about a week and she packed up her two children and moved back to the alms house. My mother always assumed that 6 children were just too much for a young woman to care for. My mother tells me that she never saw her again. My grandmother who died was Lucy Florence Higgs Layman. What was your great grandparents Higgs given names? Not much, but gives you a slight time line. Lynda

Va Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Rockingham/590 Surname: Turner, Minnich, Smith, Dean, Nauman ------------------------- Hi Terri, My gggrandmother was Susannah Nancy Smith who married Ellis (a.k.a. Elias ) Turner in Shenandoah Co., VA on Feb 9, 1801.I know very little about her. I have found her name on two of her sons marriage license, circa 1865. Also her daughter's obit lists the parents.I have found her listed in Judy Campbell's website in the 1850 and 1860 Page Co census. She is also listed as head of household in the 1840 Page Co Census. I also have a copy of her request for Revolutionary War Pension that was made out some time after 1832.I know that Ellis had 9 children per his R. W. pension request, but I don't know how many were Nancy's since she was his second wife. If you can add anything to this just let me know. Jack

Thanks Maggie for sending me the below email. This email is for your and others information and to thank you and others who have generously sent me information, to send along the same information to another researcher who has a book or manuscript re the Garrisons, to inform subscribers what good courthouse records are at Rockingham County, and to inquire regarding the book listed below where the marriage license information was obtained. I was just at the Rockingham CourtHouse yesterday and looked in the records for this information: Lewis Garrison married Elizabeth Right on August 6, 1820 I looked in 1) "Index to Marriage Register Females L-Z 1778-1938." There were no Wright or Right indexed as being married to a Garrison. 2) "Index to Marriage Register Males A-K." There were no Garrison marriage listing for Garrison and Wright. 3) "Marriage Bonds and Licenses 1817-1835." There were no Garrison nor Wright nor Right mentioned for the year 1820. I did find a record of Lewis Garrison's marriage to Anna Crickenbarger, his second wife, November 1, 1840. I asked Marlene Key 540-564-3390 in Records who was very knowledgeable about these records (Lynn Lambert 540-64-3124 is usually there in charge of the genealogy room) regarding the lack of marriage information on Lewis Garrison and Elizabeth Right(Wright). She said that if it is not in any of the books mentioned above, then they were NOT married in Rockingham County. She said that it was more than likely that they obtained license and bond in the county of the bride, Elizabeth Right (Wright); that would be a good place to check. I just now called Lynn Lambert and she confirmed the above statement by Marlene Key. She also said that Lewis and Elizabeth could have also obtained their license in Albemarle (or other county) and have married in Rockingham County, with no indication in Rockingham County's records. One researcher said that Elizabeth Wright was born in Rockingham County abt. 1800, however, records going back that far are not recorded at Rockingham County. Lynn Lambert is checking again on my search and possibly any other information and I am to call her back. Joyce Brown said that they are very helpful at Rockingham County Courthouse. Indeed so! Question: Are the authors of the book "Rockingham County Marriages 1778-1850" by John Vogt and T. William Kethley, Jr." still living and hopefully subscribed to this list so that I may verify there listing. Neither Vogt and Kethley nor Strickler include a marriage for them. In fact, neither include any Pernells, male or female. Could they have married in Augusta or Shenandoah Counties? suoneill@apex.net wrote: > Does anyone have marriage records for Rockingham County that would show information for the marriage of Matthias MILLER to Phebe PERNELL?
