Chocy, Thank you sooo very much for your help. Do you have a copy of the actual bond. I saw a reprint of the bond but it was written in English with only John Haney's mark if I remember correctly. No clue that it was German. We have done DNA testing and found that John Haney and James Haney who both lived in the Swift Run Gap area, have a 99.9 per cent match. We know that Jeremiah Haney was the father of James. The road gang orders for Orange Co. show first Jeremiah, then James and finally John heading up the road gangs in that area of the county. Tax lists also show the families there. John Haney also purchased items from the estate of Stephen Shiflett on Dec. 17, 1776. We know from Census records of Greene Co. that John was born between 1740-50 and lived until 1840. The fact that his marriage to Margaret Miller was in 1797 when he was at least 47 and he had children born in approximately 1780, 1783, 1790, and one final child after the marriage 1800 gives rise to the fact that he was most probably married before Margaret or else had children out of wedlock before his marriage to Margaret Miller. There is also a group of folks that believe that Peter Haney of Rockingham was the son of John Haney and Margaret Miller and that that couple moved on to WV and was not the same John Haney that died in Greene Co. in 1840. The fact that John Haney, Jr. named one son Smith George Haney and another Gratton Miller Haney leads me to believe that this is the same John Haney that married Margaret Miller. Else, why the naming pattern. Would love to hear any other thoughts you may have on this. I know that there was a William Haney in Rockingham Co. whose children Jeremiah and Elizabeth were bonded out. He could be a brother to John that married Margaret. So many scenarios. Of for a time machine. Again, thanks for the help. Joyce Dittman
Joyce, Rockingham County, Virginia has John HANEY to Margaret MILLER on 15 September 1797. This record was recorded at the county clerk's office at Harrisonburg. Peter MILLER was Margaret's fathers. Jeremiah HANEY was the Bondsman and Henry and Barbara MILLER were witnesses. HANEY's name was signed in German. Also recorded at Harrisonburg is the marriage of Jeremiah HANEY and Beckey PAINTER the daughter of George PAINTER who was also the bondsman in 1797. I checked the early records for Rockingham for a SMITH marriage to any HANEY but found none. Chocy
Hi there, My maiden name was Haney from Greene Co., Va. The name Smith was very common as a first name in our family. I have made a guess that my gggrandfather John Haney, who married Margaret Miller in 1797 in Orange Co., Va. (present day Greene Co.) and who lived on the border of Rockingham Co. in the Swift Run Gap area may have been married to a Smith before he was married to Margaret. Four of his children were born before the marriage and his son John named a son Smith Haney. The Census of Orange Co. of those days show a Samuel Smith living next door to the Haney family. When I saw your Haney J. married to a Smith and going back to Samuel Smith I have to wonder if there was another generation further back also named Samuel. Do you know anything about Haney J. or do you know of any connections of the Smith and Haney family? Any information would be appreciated and I would be happy to share any info that I have.
