    3. I'm not one to normally go out of my way to speak out against these types of things. On the surface, its a good idea that could grow into a great one. However, be *very aware* that the immense number of POP-UP ads springing from this site once you get to it boggles the mind. My software gives a "click" sound every time a POP-UP ad emerges. When I went to the site and accessed the "features" that were mentioned in this email, my software started "clicking" with pop-up ads to the point that it sounded like a machine gun. I also have a program that will detect Spyware on my computer. After going to the site, I ran the Spyware detection software and removed several pieces of Spyware that had attached itself to my programs. Once everything was removed, I went back to the site and then logged off and ran the Spyware detection software again. Just from going to this site for less than 10 seconds I picked up a serious Spyware program from it that had already run 3 traces of my computer. The idea itself is sound, and I don't have anything in this nor against these individuals. However, this is what I would consider a "dangerous" site in terms of your computer's security. Its armed with Pop-up ads galore combined with sneaky Spyware that *will* trace your every move on the internet after you visit the site. Its just my opinion, but I'd stay away from this one. Just thought I would pass along the above in case it was helpful ... 1. Re: [VAROCKIN] HANEY/MILLER/GRATTAN
    2. Hi Chocy, Thank you again. We have been aware of those valley marriages but didn't know if any of them tied into our Haney family in Greene Co. Did i tell you that Peter Haney's descendants are convinced that John Haney Md. Margaret in 1797 are part of their family and that they emigrated to WV with Peter and family so they couldn't even be the same John Haney who died in Greene Co. in 1840 at the age of 90-100. Sooooo confusing. The similarity of names used is also confusing as John, George, William show in every generation on both John and James Haney's families. Guess I will have to wait on the microfilm to see what is going on. Just pray that that has some definitive answers. Joyce

    2. Joyce, Here is the entry as it appears in the source I used. I suggested you find the original document since that would verify if the source was correct. Always a chance of mistakes in these old book sources. "Old Tenth Legion Marriages" Marriages in Rockingham County, Virginia From 1778 to 1816 Taken from the marriage bonds. Compiled by Harry M. Strickler Originally Published: Dayton, Virginia, 1928. Page 23 & 24 "Abbreviations" Quite a few notes of consent and other notes are filed with the bonds. The substance of these are given in footnotes as well as other interesting matter. The following abbreviations are used in the footnotes as well as in the body of the page. g.-the party whose name it follows signed in German. wt.-witness or witnesses. Page 63 97-HANEY, Jeremiah; Becky PAINTER; Geo.; same. 97-HANEY, Jno.; Margt. MILLER; Peter; Jer. HANEY (30) 95-HENEY (HEINI-G), Geo.; Eliz. WINANT; David; same, g. 07-HEINY, Geo. g.; -HEICE (HICE); Mary CAMPBELL; James; same Gamel, g. 30-wt. Henry & Barb. MILLER, g. HAINEY. The above entries all show German signatures with the exception of Jeremiah and Becky PAINTER HANEY. The PAINTER family are married into my family and it is a German name and family. The spelling of PAINTER can also be found as BENDER among many other spellings which is usually what happens to most German names written in the records. The scribes were usually English and they wrote what they thought they heard. Chocy

    2. Madaline Preston
    3. About 4 years ago I had a gravestone done for a Rev. War soldier who had fought at Trenton, Long Island and Ft. Washington. Some of his descendents installed the marker in the Lutheran Cemetery in Stephen City. I had notified the Winchester paper, their Historical Society and the DAR of Frederick Co. that this event was taking place in Frederick Co. My hope was that this recognition of his service would be a reminder that many gave so much for our freedom. No one, including the church, showed any interest at all. No response from any quarter. Pity. I am glad to know the service of the Civil War soldiers, the Powell brothers, was brought to our attention by the DNR. M. 1. Re: [VAROCKIN] HANEY/MILLER/GRATTAN
    2. Hi Chocy, thank you so much for all of your help. The fact that the Haney name was written in German was the main thing that caught my attention. We had always thought that the Haney name was Irish. in 1749 in the Orange Co. records, John Haney says that he was immediately off the ship from Ireland. He came at the same time as Richard Lamb and lived near the Lambs; I also know that a John Haney was granted an ordinary license in Rockingham Co. which I have always found confusing. He also was given pay for cleaning some courthouse or church in the Rockingham records. As my John lived in what was then Orange Co. and I have land records of him purchasing land in Orange Co. in Swift Run Gap, I sometimes wonder if there weren't a German John Haney in Rockingham and an Irish one in Orange Co. I know by DNA testing that we are related to James Haney and by will that James was the son of Jeremiah Haney. If the Haney name was written in German, that really throws what we thought we knew some m! ajor curves. I guess I will have to get hold of those microfilm and see the original. Did you see the German name yourself or did someone tell you that it was in German. That would give us a whole new slant on things if that is the case. The descendants of James Haney are absolutely convinced that they are Irish. Family lore or some such thing. This would also prove their theory wrong if the two Johns are one and the same. The Grattan name I had tried to link up with but I think they may have used the Grattan name because the Gratten family was a wealthy one in Rockingham Co. It was Gratten's middle name of Miller that made me head in the direction that our John was the one married to Margaret Miller. My John Jr. may have named his son after the woman that raised him if his own mother had died before John Sr. md. Margaret. I will get in touch with LVA and see what they can send me. Joyce -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 18 Apr 2006 20:31:56 EDT Subject: [VAROCKIN] HANEY/MILLER/GRATTAN Joyce, I don't have the Marriage Bond for John HANEY and Margaret MILLER. Mr. Strickler took the information from the actual marriage bonds.
