There's a small fire road leading to it. You'll have to walk about 1/2 mi. Further in, there's one up behind a house on the left (Wood is the name of the land owners). If you turn left onto Sandy Bottom Rd., you'll find about 4 small cemeteries scattered along the dead end road.

    1. New Haven Thank yous!
    2. Thanks to everyone for the location of New Haven. I am researching Charles Burton, who was there on the 1810 and 1820 censuses. {Sorry, Jim. " Lee" is my married name, and they were from Tennessee.} My great great grandfather was John Burton, who lived in District 5 on the 1850 census. He was a carpenter at a Forge, and gave his birth place as PA. But on later censuses, his children both said that their father was born in VA, so I think that he came to Rockingham Co. as a very young child, and that Charles Burton was his father. There was also a Thomas Burton in Augusta Co. who claimed to be born in PA on one census, and MD on a later one. I think that he was the brother of John, son of Charles, and that he was born on the trip from PA to Rockingham. I also have an interest in Jacob Cupp of Port Republic. I have a John Cupp who married my great great grandmother, Margaret Linkenhoker in Botetourt Co. around 1829. I haven't been able to link John Cupp to any of the many Cupp families of Botetourt or Montgomery. Margaret's son married the daughter of John Burton of Rockingham. If these names ring a bell with anyone, or you have info to disprove my theories, I would like to know.. Karen Lee Williamsburg,VA

    1. Re: [VAROCKIN] New Haven,Rockingham Co.
    2. Karen Lee, The "1815 Virginia Landowners Directory" has a 1827/1859 Map of Rockingham County which shows New Haven just west of Port Republic just across a river. New Haven is mentioned in some of the Landowners' property descriptions such as: Adam ARGABRITE; New Haven; located 12 miles southeast of the county courthouse at Harrisonburg. You could probably work out the location of ARGABRITE's land by using your Atlas at home and/or mapquest/topozone moving southeast towards Port Republic for 12 miles. That should get you pretty close to New Haven, if not New Haven itself. Jacob BARGER is listed as being from Augusta County, Virginia with property in Port Republic Town located also 12 miles southeast of the county courthouse at Harrisonburg. So that makes New Haven look like a bedroom community of Port Republic which fits in with New Havens placement on the above mentioned map. I hope this description is of help to you. Chocy Brown

    1. Route from Philadelphia to Shenandoah Valley in the 1700's
    2. Richard Bloss
    3. NEW HANOVER PA TO ELKTON VA in the 1700’s Approximate Route of Georg Conrad Bloss family trip from New Hanover, PA to Elkton, VA in approximately 1750-53. Old maps detail the route of the mid 1700s from Philadelphia to the Shenandoah valley. It was a major route of the times. The May 2006 issue of the Smithsonian Magazine has an article about the same route from Gettysburg to Frederick MD being used up to and including the Civil War period. We know Georg Conrad Bloss lived in New Hanover for approximately three to five years from several sources. One, George Conrad Bloss is listed in the "Rupp" boats lists at the Philadelphia city hall on the sailing ship "Lydia", which arrived in September 1749. Second, the family baptized a daughter at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Hanover in 1750. Records of the time also indicate that is was very common for German emigrants to be indentured for 5 or 6 years to a farmer to pay for the $18-50 boat fare from Europe. 1. New Hanover is northwest of Philadelphia, just north and west of Norristown. 2. Trip would have followed approximately present day US 30 through Lancaster, York to Gettysburg. 3. In Gettysburg, the route would follow US 15 south to Frederick, MD. 4. In Frederick, the route would have followed approximately US 340 south west to Front Royal and on to Luray and to Elkton. 3. Karen: New Haven was a town that was authorized around 1800. It was located on the north side of North River across the river from Port Republic. When it ceased to be recognizable as a town I don't know, but when I was a young boy in the late 1940s and early 1950s, there was nothing there to make you think there was ever a town there. Our of curiosity, what family that was there in 1810 are you researching? Also, later in the 1800s there was Lee family in Port Republic. Are you or your husband possibly related to that family? 3. I just did Google search for 1810+New Haven VA and got a slave listing that has Port Republic and the next place is New Haven. The list was compiled by Pat Ritchie. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Derrow" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2006 7:10 PM Subject: Re: [VAROCKIN] New Haven,Rockingham Co. > Was it near present-day Grottoes?
