Just a thought since Kiefer sounds like it may be German, many used a Christain name Mary to precede the name they were called. Yours may have been Mary Barbara.

I have been struggling to find information from between 1778-1800 about the family of Charles RAREY (aka RORIG, ROHRIG, ROE, RAIRY, various mis-spellings and typos, etc) and wife Margaret WOLFE (or SIMPSON). Family lore says they moved to Rockingham from either PA or OH sometime fairly soon after their 1778 marriage in PA - which I understand was the same year that Rockingham Co was formed from Augusta Co. The RAREY's had 11 children - 10 of whom were born somewhere in Rockingham Co before the family moved to Ohio in mid-1799 -- and I believe that a family that lived in a county for 20 years and had 10 kids must have left behind at least some records! (grin). I'm hoping there might be church baptismal records (religion not known, but believed to be Protestant; RAREY ethnicity was German; Simpson/Wolfe was English) - or at least land records that tells me where they lived in the county. I've not been able to locate them in VA in other sources I've searched (although I'm not very knowledgeable about VA research), so I'm sorry I can't be more specific re townships, etc. Names and birthdates for the children are listed below. However, by 1800, this couple and most, if not all, of their children were living in Ohio - Franklin County and area - which means that the family should appear in VA records for only about those 20 years - and then vanish. I'd also be interested to know if you find families with the same surnames as the people that the RAREY siblings married (might provide clues, although I believe that most, if not all, were married in Ohio -- so that would be an added bonus, but please don't feel compelled to look for them too). (1) Catherine Mary RAREY , born 1778 in Rockingham Co., VA; died 2 Nov 1854 in OH - married Philip PONTIUS. (2) Nicholas RAREY, died in infancy in Rockingham Co, VA. (have no info about birthdate) (3) John RAREY, born the oldest son, born before 1784; He married Elizabeth "Effey" HICKMAN (4) Charles RAREY, JR. (Rev.), born 1784 in Rockingham co., VA; died 3 Sep 1847; married Mary KRAMER. (5) Christina Mary RAREY, born 1785 in Rockingham co., VA; died 8 Jul 1860; married John Fleming SOLOMON. (6) Adam RAREY, born 1786 in Rockingham Co., VA; died 1 Feb 1839 in Groveport, OH; married Mary Catherine PONTIUS (7) Elizabeth RAREY , born abt 25 Dec 1786 in Rockingham, VA; died 26 Apr 1870; married Thomas HARMAN. (8) Benjamin RAREY, born 1791 in Rockingham Co., VA; died 5 Nov 1841; married Mary "Polly" ARNOLD. (9) Parker RAREY, born 2 Mar 1794 in Rockingham Co., VA; died 2 Jul 1870; married Sarah BURGETT. (10) George Solomon RAREY , born 1795 in Rockingham Co., VA; died 24 Jan 1850; married (1) Jane Paisley WILSON; (2) Sarah (Whetsel) BISHOP. With many thanks in advance for info or insights that could solve this long-standing family puzzle. Kaye Steward Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

That is how to do it with out any fuss and bother. And there were certainly enough of them. Several older children would have been able to care for him.

Angel, your uncle, James Lee Henton, was the 4th Great Grandson of Peter Henton/Hinton, Sr., and Mary Polly Scothorn. James' Great Great Grandfather was the Andrew Sellers Henton that Robert mentiond as being in his database. Andrew Sellers Henton was a grandson of Peter Henton, Sr., via Peter's son, Peter Henton, Jr. Robert, from what you've written so far I do not know if you are a direct descendant of Andrew Sellers Henton (June 14, 1821 - June 8, 1895) and wife Barbara Catherine Harrison (Aug 13, 1823 - Jan 25, 1877), but, if so, you and Angel are cousins. My *guess* is that you descend from George Harrison Henton and wife Mable Ellen Neck as their grandson. If my guess is correct, you and I are 7th Cousins 1 Time Removed. But, that's just a guess, and I'm probably wrong as usual :D Anyways, I hope that is at least a little helpful. Michael Sellers

My records show that Peter Henton, Sr., was born in 1762 in Berks County, PA. He died in November 1813 in Rockingham County, Virginia. His wife, Mary Polly Scothorn was born August 31, 1762, in Upper Darby, PA. She died August 7, 1834. Mary's gravestone was surveyed and photographed in April 2003 as part of the R'ham County Tombstone project. A picture of the gravestone and "cemetery" can be viewed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~varockin/tombstones/cemetery-Flook-Armentrout.htm The cemetery has long been abandoned and its a near miracle that her gravestone is still standing much less located. According to the directions on how to get to the cemetery the following was written: --------------------------------------- "East of Lacey Spring, Rockingham County, Virginia. From Harrisonburg, Virginia, take Route 11 North to Route 806 (Martz Road) and turn right. Go to Route 717 (Indian Trail Road) and turn right. Go to Route 934 (Henton Mill Road) and turn left. At the end of Route 934 on the left side is a knoll in the field where cemetery is located. Notes: Cemetery has no fence nor is it maintained. In the 1960s the Daughters of the American Revolution wrote "An old abandoned cemetery northeast of Harrisonburg. Property owned by Flook Armentrout." -------------------------------------- This "Flook-Armentrout" property may have indeed once been owned by your Peter Henton/Hinton, Sr., but I don't know. It is thought that Peter was buried within the same cemetery as Mary, however, a stone for him was not found. I would guess that some digging around beneath the grass and soil would be needed, and I'll bet more gravestones would be found than just the two. My limited connection to your ancestors, the Hentons, is found with the marriages of two of their sons, Peter Henton, Jr., and Jesse Henton. Peter & Jesse married Mary Sellers and Elizabeth Sellers, respectively. Mary and Elizabeth were sisters, daughters of Andrew Sellers and Hannah Haga. Mary and Elizabeth were both "3rd Cousins, 4 Times Removed" to me, hence my connection to the Hentons/Hintons. Don't know if that helped, but I figure every little bit helps, sometimes. Sue Dietz of Front Royal sent me an article from THE GOSPEL MESSENGER, dated August 2, 1913, which was found in four pieces inserted into page of a Bible belonging to Laban Wilson Teets, born November 7, 1842, died April 30, 1917, which is now in Sue's possession. He was a minister of Newdale Church of the Brethren, ((Martin Miller, Sr., was supposedly the builder of New Dale Church.) Hardy County, Needmore, WV, on Kimsey's Run Road. The Bible is circa 1865-1870? The Bible was passed to youngest child of Laban Wilson Teets--Amanda May who married Charles Hall Miller, grandson of Martin, then to Amanda's oldest living daughter, Vesta Pearl and to Sue's mother and to her. ELDER BENJAMIN MILLER - GOSPEL MESSENGER - AUGUST 2, 1913 Elder Benjamin Miller of the Green Mount congregation in Rockingham County, Virginia, fell asleep in Jesus, June 11, 1913, at the advanced age of 83 y, 8 m, and 14 d - full of years and full of good works. At the time of his death he was the oldest elder in the Northern District of Virginia. He comes of a family rather remarkabLe for longevity and altogether remarkable for pluarlity, he being the youngest child of eighteen children. Eld. Daniel Miller and Sister Anna Hoover, his wife, the father and mother of Benjamin had born unto them nine sons and nine daughters Sixteen of them grew up to manhood and womanhood and most of them lived to an old age.Benjamin was the youngest and surviving member of the family Of the nine brothers, Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Joseph, Frederick and Benjamin were ministers of the Church of the Brethren; all ordained elders, and all active ministers and worked in the church Samuel and John were useful deacons. Daniel was the only one to die a layman. In his young manhood, April 15, 1852, Bro. Miller married Sister Hettie E Showalter of the Showalter family, talented in music. They lived together forty-six years, when Sister Miller died. To them were born twelve children-seven sons and five daughters. Nine of them grew to maturity. Three died in infancy. Anthony, a deacon, and John died young. All of the nine children that grew up became members of the Church of the Brethren. Of the four surving sons, three of them are ministers, Jacob A., Manvel, Texas, an elder; Benjamin F., Grottoes; and I. William, Singers Glen, both of Virginia. The oldest child living, the wife of Brother D.W. Wampler is the mother of Bro. B.F. Wampler, the head of the department of Music in_______ College, Huntingdon, PA. Mollie C. and Rebecca F. remain at the old home, where their father was born and died, and where nearly all his life was spent. November 23, 1800, Bro. Miller married Sister Catherine Fitzwater, a widow and a sister to his first wife. She survives him to mourn the loss of a faithful husband and devoted companion. There is another long column about his life and service to the Brethren Church. Sue is interested in exchanging information with anyone who recognizes this family. Her address is
