They were married 7 Aug 1842. They had a daughter, Catherine, who married John Robert Gaines. His mother's name was Elizabeth Cammack Gaines. I am guessing that Nancy and Elizabeth were sisters but I need some concrete proof. In the 1850 census, Elizabeth and Walker Gaines were living in the Catherine Cammack household. She is probably the mother of Elizabeth (Nancy?). Elizabeth's marriage bond states that William Cammack is her father. There is no marriage bond for Nancy Cammack and Thomas Piner but they were married the same year, by the same minister, and in the same county (Rockingham) as Walker Gaines and Elizabeth Cammack. I know nothing about the other Gaineses you mentioned.

Is this is your Thomas b abt 1824, parents Thomas & Elizabeth Swindler (Swindle) Piner? I have a Susan Gaines who married Lewis Rexrode (my line) on June 12, 1904 in Rockingham County, Virginia at the residence of Edward Clayton. Is Susan in your line? Her parents are Henry & Sallie Gaines. Also, in the 1900 U.S. Census, District 59, Central, Rockingham County, Virginia, Thomas & Amanda Arey Piner had a Claire Gaines living with them as "help". She was born May 1885 in Virginia, is she in your line? I dont have any on the Gaines except for what I stated above, but I'm sure there's some more of a connection w/my Piner's. That is why I always ask about the availability of marriage bonds or certificates from the Clerk of the Court in the relevant county. It is a representative of the Clerk of the Court in Rockingham County who told me the bond for Nancy Cammack and Thomas Piner was destroyed. She only had something from the minister who said he married the couple. I found a compilation of Rockingham County Marriages, 1778-1850 by John Vogt and T. William Kethley, Jr. (1984) listed under Thomas Riner not Piner. I think they have made a mistake. They listed the marriage as taken place 7 Aug 1842 and the minister as Thomas Rice, I believe.

I checked Friday, February 14 and February 21, 1890 but did not find John Robert Gaines' obit. I checked November 28 and November 25, 1892 issues for Elizabeth "Betsy" Gaines' obit but did not find one for her either. The Daily News Record began publication ca 1903; I did find on obit for Catherine Piner Gaines. The [Harrisonburg, VA] Daily News Record, 30 Oct 1924, p. 4, col. 3; microfilm 21, Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA. Mrs. Gaines Dies at Clover Hill Had She Lived to be Day Older She would have been 80 Years of Age Mrs. Catherine Gaines, widow of the late Robert Gaines, and mother of E.W. and W.L. Gaines, of Harrisonburg, died yesterday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock at her home one mile west of Clover Hill. Death was due to complications from which Mrs. Gaines had been ill for ten weeks. Mrs. Gaines was a daughter of the late Thomas and Nancy Cammack Piner, and had she lived one more day, would have been 80 years old, she having been born Oct. 30, 1844. Mrs. Gaines was a life-long member of the United Brethren Church, and was always active in church affairs. She was a devoted mother and a friend to everyone and will be sadly missed in the community where she resided for many years. Besides the two sons in Harrisonburg, Mrs. Gaines leaves four daughters. They are: Mrs. M.H. Lambert and Mrs. Charles E. Sipe, of near Lilly, and Misses Mabel and Betty Gaines, at home. Twenty-two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held from the Ottobine U. B. Church Friday morning at 11 o'clock, the funeral party leaving the home at 10 o'clock. Dr. W.F. Gruver, of Harrisonburg, will conduct the services and interment will be in the Ottobine cemetery.
