    2. Ken, I am trying to find my greatgrandfather, John M. Smith. I found him on the 1880 census but not the 1900. I think he died sometime between 1896 and 1900 but I do not know which year, day or month. I thought if there was a state census maybe I could find him. I sent a message to W&L but what I got back did not tell me if there was a state census. Their only reference was the federal census. I read it somewhere that some states had taken their own census. I don't know if Virginia was one of them. Thank you for your help. Faye
