Samuel McCluer, born 1765, died 1833 and his wife Sara 1766-1817 (surname unknown) were the parents of the following. Descendants of Samuel McCluer Generation No. 1 1. Samuel1 McCluer was born 1765 in Virginia, and died February 1833 in Lexington, Richland County, Ohio. He married (1) Sarah. She was born 1766, and died November 29, 1817 in Richland County, Ohio. He married (2) Nancy Rutan November 03, 1822. Children of Samuel McCluer and Sarah are: 2 i. Sarah2 McCluer. She married Andrew Hunter; born Bet. 1800 - 1810. 3 ii. Thomas McCluer, born January 29, 1790 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; died April 1864 in Richland County, Ohio. He married (1) Susannah Trucks Abt. 1816; born in Pennsylvania; died August 1838 in Jackson County, Illinois. He married (2) Sarah Lockheart August 22, 1839 in Richland County, Ohio. 4 iii. Elizabeth McCluer, born December 20, 1793 in Arnold Valley, Rockbridge County, Virginia; died May 10, 1864 in Troy Township, Richland County, Ohio. She married Benjamin Gass January 05, 1827 in Richland County, Ohio; born June 12, 1794 in Brooke County, West Virginia; died February 17, 1879 in Richland County, Ohio. 5 iv. Rachel McCluer, born Abt. 1797. She married Robert Hunter July 01, 1819 in Richland County, Ohio; born Bet. 1790 - 1800. 6 v. Ann McCluer, born February 14, 1798 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; died October 16, 1877 in Richland County, Ohio. She married John Gass March 21, 1821 in Richland County, Ohio; born June 12, 1798 in Brooke County, VA; died January 30, 1859 in Troy Township, Richland County, Ohio. 7 vi. Samuel Jr. McCluer, born August 18, 1802 in Arnold's Valley, Rockbridge County, Virginia; died June 29, 1879 in Lexington, Richland County, Ohio. He married Rhoda Montanye July 29, 1830 in Richland County, Ohio; born 1808; died May 09, 1870 in Richland County, Ohio. 8 vii. James A. McCluer, born April 29, 1805 in Arnold's Valley, Rockbridge County, VA; died March 18, 1885 in Richland County, Ohio. He married (1) Betsy Bowers. He married (2) Jane Laughlin November 19, 1844 in Richland County, Ohio; died in Richland County, Ohio. 9 viii. William McCluer, born October 02, 1807 in probably Rockbridge County, Virginia; died July 16, 1856 in Jackson County, Illinois. He married Margaret Elizabeth Barnett June 27, 1833 in probably Richland County, Ohio; born August 26, 1807 in Pennsylvania; died November 05, 1859 in Jackson County, Illinois. 10 ix. Mary McCluer, born January 06, 1812 in Richland County, Ohio; died January 01, 1895 in Ohio. She married John Davis October 30, 1834 in Richland County, Ohio. Child of Samuel McCluer and Nancy Rutan is: 11 i. Hugh Rutan2 McCluer, born Abt. 1823 in Ohio; died 1848 in Texas. He married Rebecca Matilda Balch December 13, 1842 in Perry County, Illinois; died 1853 in Alvarado, Johnson Co., TX. In Samuel McCluer Jr's obituary, it states as his place of birth, Arnold's Valley, Rockbridge County, Virginia 1802 A.D, August 18th. In James McCluers obitutary, it states as his place of birth: born 79 years ago four miles from that sublime architecture of nature, the Natural Bridge, Virginia. Any information on these McCluers/McClures in Rockbridge County would be appreciated. Having trouble pinning down who was Samuel McCluer Sr.'s father was and if he is part of the original Rockbridge McCluer families or if he came from somewhere else. Evidenly he was there by 1802, as his son, Samuel McCluer, Jr. was born there.
