The 1883 Rockbridge Co, VA map which you asked about is available from the Rockbridge Co, VA Historical Society in Lexington, VA. http://www.rockhist.org/pub.htm This map is known as "The Carmichael Map" because John Carmichael prepared it. If you order it, make sure you also purchase the index of names because there are quite a few names shown on the map & it takes a looooooong time to find the names you're looking for without the index! Cost for map & index is $9 plus shipping. They also have the "Borden's Grant" map from 1745, with names on it. They sell an index for it, but it's not listed on this page. Hi Sandra, Checked the 1840 Census for a Robert Gilmore. There is a Robert Gilmore living in Lexington, Rockbridge Cty. The 1840 Census infomation is somewhat limited. Childrens names are not included but Robert Gilmore has 2 males under the age of 5, and 2 males between 10-15. It appears Robert himself is between 60-70. There is 1 female uner 5, 1 between 5-10, 2 between 10-15, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female, (perhaps Roberts wife) between 30-40. The census gives no data concerning where they came from.
