    3. Fern, I'm answering you on list because I know there may be others who are interested in solving this problem. I once ran into a similar circumstance, but they would copy and mail to me the index page on which one surname would appear (i.e. they would copy the "R" index if I was looking for "Richards"). I would then go through the index under that letter and see which pages I needed for my research, write back to them with the specific pages I needed copied, and they obliged with my request... each step required a copying fee, and I mailed a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope that was large enough for the copies' return to me. Another thing you'll find is that it is better to make a (polite) request for one article, such as a will, at a time, absolutely no more than two, such as a will and an appraiser's return (especially if both are in the same will book). Like everyone else, they like to keep it simple and friendly, so that they can get the task done quickly and move on to the next. If you follow these suggestions, you may find it easier to get their cooperation. Remember, though, that some clerks, at least some in Virginia, do not answer mail queries at all, other than to return your money, perhaps with a list of professional researchers in their respective areas. I hope this helps, Carolyn HALE BRUCE Co-author of Rebel King, Hammer of the Scots and Rebel King, The Har'ships (Now Available!) See our site at www.RebelKing.com ----- Original Message ----- From: fern To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, October 11, 2004 12:10 PM Subject: [VAROCKBR] Need some help please I recently talked with a lady at the Staunton Court House about getting copies of wills belonging to my ancestors and I mailed in the list of wills I wanted. My check and list was returned to me saying they could not do research for me. Obviously I still need to get copies of these wills and am looking for someone who lives close enough to the Staunton Court House to look them up and make 'good' copies for me. If there is anyone on the list who can help or make suggestions as to how I might get those copies I would very much like to hear from you. You can contact me off list at: [email protected] Thanks, Fern in Colorado P.S. I am more than willing to pay for your expenses if they are with in my reach. ==== VAROCKBR Mailing List ==== Visit the Rockbridge County Archives! http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/rockbrid.htm Do you have deeds, wills, marriage or other infomation.
