There is also the question of why Sidney was living with another couple and what is the relationship to James Sale who was also living with another couple in Rockbridge County. There may be a guardianship for Sidney and James that would shed light on who there parents were. I find it interesting that Woodson seems to disappear about the same time John Sale disappears from Rockbridge County.

Sale was the brother of William H. Sale. (I have various written sources I can give, if interested, including both bros obits). Anyway, Woodson P. and Nancy Burks Sale are listed at the parents of William H. Sale in his obit. With the above in mind, I don't see where Thomas P. Sale fits in, unless he is bro to Woodson or Woodson also went by Thomas. AGAIN, A PROBLEM with thinking Woodson may have also gone by the name of Thomas is that I have a copy of a bill of sale? registered in Rockbridge Co., 1843 in which Woodson P. Sale sells what appears to be a household's worth of goods (mare, sleigh bed, buckets, etc) to a John Letcher, also of Rockbridge Co.

    2. Debbie Moore
    3. >Looking for information about Gordons who emigrated from Ireland to >Virginia >and lived in Rockbridge County. Possibly emigrated from Counties >Tyrone/Donegal between 1740 and 1820. Which Gordons are you interested in? I wrote an extensive biography last year for my father-in-law on Samuel Gordon, grandson of John Gordon born before 1775 (place unknown) and whose will was probated 1825 in Rockbridge County. This John had one son and at least two grandsons named John. Although his wife is listed as Sarah on a Rockbridge County deed, I do not know if she is the mother of his children. Some descendents moved to Ohio and Indiana before the Civil War. John's children (listed in his will) are: * Peggy b. 1765-1784 (source: 1810 Census) died presumably before 1830 when husband Joseph WHITE is listed without a wife in census (Augusta County) * William b. 1765-1784 (source: 1810 Census) no further info * Betsy b. 1780-1790 (source: 1810 & 1830 census) * Alexander b. 1780-1790 (source: 1820 & 1830 census) * Sarah md. William JONES b. 1790-1800 (source: 1830 census) * Robert b. 1790-1800 md. Polly STERLING (source: 1830 census) * Polly b. 1794-1800 (source: 1820-1830 census) * Nancy (no further information) * James, died before 1825 (source: father's willl) * John Jr., died 1827-1830 (last child born in 1827, wife head of household in 1830) The Ohio branch (and thusly Samuel, the subject of my biography) descends through John Jr. Not sure where the Indiana branch comes in. We also have an Alexander in Ohio that we can't determine for sure how he ties in. (Gallia County), possibly the son of John Jr. but with a different mother than the others. There is an early mention of a Thomas, John and James Gordon in Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church records in Augusta County, but I have not researched back that far, having gotten distracted by a different line. The Rockbridge County Gordons lived *very* close to the Augusta County line (visited the farm two summers ago) and the natural migration route to get there would have been right down through the Shenandoah Valley. Plus, Augusta is the "parent" county of Rockbridge. So, I'm guessing all records up the Valley need to be checked for 18th century activities, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Pre-Revolutionary War records are very difficult for me to understand, both in what they mean and where else to look, and the handwriting. Not to mention that Gordon is a somewhat common name. So far though, the early Rockbridge County Gordons all seem to be related. During the early years of Rockbridge County, there were also Gordon groups in Rockingham and Botetourt Counties. I am certain they were from Ireland, considering the time frame and their early involvement in the New Providence Presbyterian Church, and the migration patterns of the time. If this John does tie into the John, Thomas and James Gordon of the 1740s Tinkling Springs records, then it would appear these three were probably the original immigrants (if they are all three related.) Tinkling Springs records: John Gordon father of John baptised 11 Apr 1742 Thomas Gordon, father of children baptised between 1740 and 1748 Colonel James Gordon's daughter Mary, married about 1768 to Rev. James Waddell What I would like to know: is the John baptised 11 Apr 1742 "our" John who died in 1825? He would have been in his 40s when his children listed in his will were born.......much, much more research to do :-) Love to correpond with you (or anybody esle interested in this family for that matter), and would also like to find out where the WHITE and JONES families ended up. As you can see, my early Rockbridge Gordon information is somewhat sketchy.
