Charles was said to have been born in Augusta County, but it very well could have been Rockbridge. Charles McClung married Sarah Gabbart in 1834, they had 3 children and by the 1840 were in Harrison County, VA/WV where they added more children to the family. Charles died in 1868 at the age of 58, parents names were "unknown". It could be possible that Charles was orphaned at an early age and was raised by someone else. Any information is greatly appreciated. Anita McClung Fayette County, WV
I don't know that there are any overlay maps of roads as such, however, the Rockbridge Historical Society has a copy of an 1880 engineering map which you can purchase from them and a couple of other years of maps and there are more maps in the Special Collections at Leyburn Library which you can compare. The 1880 engineering map has the names of households and where they are located on the roads. I believe the engineering maps may have been done every 10 or 20 years. Leyburn Library Special Collections at W&L is probably where to look. However, you'll have to check and see about hours as graduation is tomorrow and they will have summer hours. Patte Wood

I grew up on a farm in Augusta County, between Staunton and Waynesboro that was part of a McClure grant. His daughter, Elizabeth McClure married Samuel Kerr and her father gave them the land. Don't know if this was part of the same family or not. Betty Wine [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>

I have been checking connections by marriage in County Donegal and while doing some research , I found a John McCluer and William McCluer in the Hearth Rolls 1665. Perhaps some of their ancestors emigrated - later generations emigrated to the United States/ Canada, but by that time the name was spelt McClure. Regards George

Evidenly he was there by 1802, as his son, Samuel McCluer, Jr. was born there.
Thank's for being good to Barbara Stanley. I was able to get my computer repaired, thank's to Barbara, and a nice man who works on computers. I am back on for just a moment. I am hearing thunder in the distance. So i'm going to be sure to unplug that phone line. Before you all suggest it, Yes I have a surge protector, but it didn't stop the phone from killing the modum. While I have your attention, Memorial DAY and the Summer Vacations are just around the corner. I plan to take my vacation too, I will ask Barbara once again for her assistance, and do the same for her when she is away. I hope you all a safe trip on your vacations and wonderful summer. My first Genealogy Class was a huge success. I am planning another to start the last Wednesday July and run through the 4 Wednesday's in August. Classes will be held in the Fincastle Library, and start at 6:15 promptly. Anyone wishing to attend, please e-mail me at Rena Worthen [email protected]
