Donna, I know Margaret had a son, William, born around 1861 but his last name was Armstrong. If she was married to Thomas Ayres at the time why didn't he use his last name? I don't have a lot of information on she or John. If I get more information I will pass it along to you. Thank you for you help. Faye
Ken and Faye, I checked the census for 1860 and found a Margaret married to Thomas Ayres, age 50. Do you think it possible that Margaret married Thomas Ayres whose household she was living in the 1850 census? I know that she was married to Andrew Black about 3 years prior to marrying John M. Smith. Let me know what you think. Although this isn't my line, I find it very interesting. Another thing, after checking the ages, it wouldn't be possible for John M.'s father to be my husbands' ggg-grandfather's brother. He could have been the son of my John's son, James, though. Ken, Rachael died in Feb. and Alfred J. died in Nov. Robert and Winfred are still living. They are the children from my mother's first marriage to Alfred Jackson Hamilton. Ken, The Sallie E. you have as Andrew and Sena's daughter is incorrect. Sallie is Andrew's sister. The children of Andrew and Sena are: Bessie Ella, Ollie Virginia, Walter Jackson; Annie Eliza, Flora Margaret and Minnie Irene (my mother). I don't know who Sherman is. He was on the 1870 census with Andrew. I have checked the 1850 & 1860 census for John and Mary but could not find them in Rockbridge or Augusta. I have check surrounding areas and I could not find them. They may have been missed on the census. Thank you very much for you help. Faye
According to Ruley Cemetery p-117 she was born 26 Jul 1865 and Andrew 29 Jul 1868. Donna, Sallie is Andrew's sister not his daughter. I don't have any information on James and Sarah, John's parents. I am still trying to get information on John. I have been trying to find something on his daughter, Sallie. I know she married James Ludwick in 1897 and I found them listed on the 1930 census in Lynchburg, VA. with a son named William. If I come up with any information I will be glad to share it with. Thank you, Faye
Ken, My husband is related to the Smiths and Gaylors of Rockbridge County, so I was very interested in the discussion that you and Faye have been having about John M. Smith and his children. I noticed that the birthdate for Andrew Smith's wife, Sena Virginia Irvine Smith seems off if the birthdate for their daughter, Sallie is accurate. If Sena was born in 1865 and Sallie was born in 1871, Sena would have been only 7 years old which would be impossible. Could there have been a typo somewhere? (As an aside, I find it interesting that my husband's grandmother was Lora Zena Smith. It makes me wonder if they got the name Zena from Sena.) Also, I am wondering if John M. Smith's father James could have been the brother of my husband's ggg-grandfather, John Smith who was married to Nelly Gaylor? Do you have any ideas or information about them? I have claims of Indian ancestry on my maternal grandmother's side. She was Nettie Agnes Entsminger and I cover that on my website "Maverick's Corner". Basically I have a few suspect families that I believe the Indian blood could have come from. Through my Entsminger line I am descended from the families of Hartless and Moore which have some claims of Indian ancestry. There are a few others connected there that I also am suspicious of. ~Mike~ Webmaster of the following sites: The Robert Mackay Clan http://www.robertmackayclan.com/ Maverick's Corner http://maverick.tuscaroras.com/ Hopewell Centre Meeting http://hopecentre.quaker.org/ McKay Chimney Specialists http://www.mckaychimney.com/ _________________________________________________________________ Get fast, reliable Internet access with MSN 9 Dial-up now 3 months FREE! http://join.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/

Ken, I am trying to find my greatgrandfather, John M. Smith. I found him on the 1880 census but not the 1900.
