Hi Sandra, Checked the 1840 Census for a Robert Gilmore. There is a Robert Gilmore living in Lexington, Rockbridge Cty. The 1840 Census infomation is somewhat limited. Childrens names are not included but Robert Gilmore has 2 males under the age of 5, and 2 males between 10-15. It appears Robert himself is between 60-70. There is 1 female uner 5, 1 between 5-10, 2 between 10-15, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female, (perhaps Roberts wife) between 30-40. The census gives no data concerning where they came from. I hope this is helpful. On the surface it appears you're on to something. Good luck with your research. Jan TracingMyRoots <tracingmyroot[email protected]> wrote: Does the 1840 census list children? The 1883 Rockbridge Co, VA map which you asked about is available from the Rockbridge Co, VA Historical Society in Lexington, VA. http://www.rockhist.org/pub.htm This map is known as "The Carmichael Map" because John Carmichael prepared it. If you order it, make sure you also purchase the index of names because there are quite a few names shown on the map & it takes a looooooong time to find the names you're looking for without the index! Cost for map & index is $9 plus shipping. They also have the "Borden's Grant" map from 1745, with names on it. They sell an index for it, but it's not listed on this page. Someone researching the SALE line in this county must know something! Zorina (Sale) Chaffin
Also of Martin, Hall, maybe Ellis line. Perhaps we should share notes? Have known ancestors from Rockbridge in Sale, McCorkle lines. Not sure where all Martins came from. Some from South Carolina. Some from Warren County. Not sure where Warren County line came out of, but believe Rockbridge is likely. Yes, I was. Actually , I believe Wm.E. did live elsewhere until around 1900. He is on the PP Tax list as living in Brushy Hills when his father died. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 18, 2004 5:11 PM Subject: Re: [VAROCKBR] Martin, Samuel Ellis- Fitzgeralds, Hall, Hartless > Are you referring to Brushy Hill in Rockbridge County? > I checked the map from 1883 and found a W. Is there anyone with information on George & Edmonia Ludwick family. I am looking form information on James in particular. I am also researching John M. Smith and William M. Irvine if anyone has any information on them as well. Any information will be very much appreciated. Thanks, Faye
Are you referring to Brushy Hill in Rockbridge County? I checked the map from 1883 and found a W. Martin but it wasn't in the Brushy Hill area. It was in the Thorn Hill Area towards Collierstown. Faye
Does anyone have relatives that may have lived in the Brushy Creek area of Rockbridge during the time period of 1880 to 1910? Would like to know about it's history. In researching the tax, land records and deeds of the county I found that my great-grandfather S.E. MARTIN lived there for many years, at least from abt.1885 to his death in March of 1904. However, I could find no evidence that he actually owned the property he lived on. His very small estate was committed to Sheriff Thomas A. Sterrett for administration in August of 1904 by his son Wm. E. Martin, who also lived on Brushy Creek. What would have happened to that estate? I would think it had to be sold or distributed to heirs, however, there seems to be no further record at the courthouse on it. Any thoughts on this would be apprecitated. Thank you, Phyllis

Surnames: Davidson, Houston, Dunlop, McKemmey, Gilmore, Thompson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4BC.2ACI/1756.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Bill, You've done an excellent job of sorting the John Davidsons out. To further clarify, the Mill Creek John who died in 1762 was the son of Robert Davison and his wife Ann (prob. Dunlop). Robert was b. 1690, immigrated to US in 1735 and his will was proven 29 Aug 1751. He mentions wife Ann, son John Davison, and daughter Mary Huston. Some records show this Mary as Margaret or Margaret Mary Davison, wife of Robert Huston/Houston. Robert's son John (1720-1762) married Elizabeth (possibly Houston). There has been a good deal of confusion concerning this John Davidson and the "Importation" John Davidson with wife Jane. The confusion stems from a History of Rockbridge Co. by Dr. George West Diehl. Dr. Diehl blends the two Johns into one person causing great confusion for future genealogists. In reality, the John Davidson with wife Jane and sons George, Thomas, Wm, and Samuel did come through Orange Co, VA and moved on to NC. Among additional children (according to Robert Hand's 1990 book "Davison/Davidson Family: The Descendents of William and Elizabeth Davison of County Armagh, Ireland) was John "One-Eyed" Davidson (1744-1825) m. Ruth Clement. A John Davidson (1743-1780) who married Sarah "Sally" Gillham in 1765 is also listed as a descendent of John & Jane. Back to the Mill Creek John (1720-1762). His will identifies only his wife Elizabeth and 4 children and says he died "suddenly of a colick and departed this life the 11th of April, 1762". Subsequent court documents identify 3 of the children as Ann (m. John McKeemey), John, and Samuel. In 1793 the will of William Davidson mentions his brothers John and Samuel and sister Ann McKemmey. William seems to be the 4th child. Elizabeth Davidson's will was probated in 1813 in Rockbridge Co. and she names her sons John and Samuel, John McKemmey, and her grandchildren- Samuel's 7 children. Now-what about this John, son of John & Elizabeth? The only certain thing we know is that his mother Elizabeth was living with him in Rockbridge in 1813 when she died. Her will does not mention a wife or children for him at all but he did receive the bulk of her estate. Most researchers seem to think that this John was born 29 Oct 1757 and served in the Rev. War and died in 1832. An old source of my fathers, Mr. Townsend, said that this John married Jove Andrews. Other sources have him marrying Sarah Rootes (not this John) and still others show him married to Mary Thompson. I have found no documentation to support the Jove Andrews marriage. This John is not the John who married Sarah Rootes-that John died in 1798. This John may have married Mary Thompson, a dau. of Joseph & Mary, in Rockbridge Co -bond issued 31 Dec 1787. This John Jr needs more attention. There was a 2nd set of Johns-father & son- in nearly the same area at nearly the same time. This is the Collier's Creek John- John Sr and wife Mary and son John Jr and wife Sarah Rootes. John Sr may have been born in Ireland and served in the VA Militia in 1742 from Augusta Co. The two couples sold land in 1775 to William Davidson. John Jr died in 1798 and left a will which names his wife Sarah and children John (infant), Daniel (married Phebe Harrison), Agnes (wife of John Dougherty), Elizabeth (wife of Obadiah Tankersley), and minors Margaret, Mary, and Sarah. Sarah later married John Lyle Shaw. Other John Davidsons: John Davidson b 1782 was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth "Betsy" Gilmore Davidson. (Samuel was a son of John 1720-1762 and Elizabeth). This John Davidson married Elizabeth Goodbar Erwin, widow of Robert Erwin, Jr in 1807. They had 4 sons, none named John, and they all moved to Illinois. John Davidson's widow Sarah married William Morrison in 1751. What John is this? What John Davidson (or Johns) were the father(s) of Sarah "Sally" Davidson who married James Gilmore in 1784 and Jinny Davidson married William Davidson in 1798. Both of these young ladies were from Rockbridge and both have a Gilmore connection which I think puts them in the Kerr's Creek area and somehow ties them to the Robert to John line. There is also this John Davidson marriage in Rockbridge: John Davidson & Sally McCrea on 8 Jan 1801. This John is the son of William- which William? Any input anyone? Debbie

The one who married Elizabeth had a son named John (born 1757) who apprently married a Mary Thomson. The John who married Sarah had a John Junior (as you state; probably born by 1740, I would guess). I don't know who he married, but one record showed that he also married a Mary. Do you know who he married? Thanks for any help you can provide on the above.

Participation in this study is strongly encouraged as it can tremedously, and scientifically, aid your genealogical research. What started as a DNA study to help identify possible distant relatives of the Reed ancestor that both I and the site coordinator happen to share, quickly (and fortunately) "morphed" into a study to include Reed test participants of all Reed family lines and surname spelling variations. And given that surname spelling variations in the public record have long detoured many a family historian's efforts over the centuries, this study's results should also help "weed out" those having true kinship to your line, from those having no recent kinship at all, which is really what most are looking to establish with this study. So, again, any male bearing the Reed surname (or any Reed surname spelling variation thereof ~ e.g., Reid, Read, Reade, etc.) that you may know are obviously invited to participate, and should, indeed, be encouraged to do so. One thing to keep in mind is, that as the list of other DNA/surname studies continue to grow worldwide, study participants can also benefit by comparing their results with not only those in the "Reed" y-DNA databases worldwide, but also to those included in any other surname study databases worldwide by means of an interactive, database search engine. This would, in turn, help a given participant in the study to either verify or disprove their ancestral connections to a particular immigrant Reed?Reid/Read family, etc., or possible connection to yet another family/surname altogether (yikes!). In turn, the study can also aid a participant in either confirming or denying decades, or possibly centuries of, hearsay, long-held assumptions and/or family lore regarding potential familial connections with other early (Reed) immigrants, pioneers, etc. - yet another beneficial by-product of this study. Further, for those concerned with any aspect of confidentiality with regard to test results, you can access the appropriate associated link on the Family Tree DNA web site, as there is a confidentiality disclosure agreement posted there. Again, the link associated with our particular (Reed) study can be found at this website: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=V51815&special=True. Any other links mentioned in my previous web posting should also be helpful as well. Sould you have any further questions or concerns concerning any aspect of this study, please feel free to contact either myself, or better yet, the project coordinator (Lisa Alther), as either of us would be happy to respond. Hope you can participate, Bob
